lively and colorful here. The Place is a bit of a mess, and the buildings aren’t the most beautiful in
London, but the streets are always interesting, with surprises around every corner. The name is derived
from a hunting call, “So-ho”, that huntsmen were heard to cry as they chased deer in royal parklands.
Soho is packed with continental food shops and restaurants. Gerrard street is the centre of London’s
Chinatown. It also attracts artists, poets and media representatives, such as Mozart, Karl Marx, Eliot.
Shaftesbury Avenue is located in the heart of London's theatre district and it has clubs, pubs, street
markets, clothing stores, making it a place to live and work. Piccadilly Circus is also a magnet for young
people from all over the world. They say if you spend enough time in this square, you will meet
everyone you have ever known.

Traditionally London is divided into several parts: the City, the West End, the East End and Westminster.
The City is the oldest part of London, its financial and business centre. The heart of the City is the Stock
Exchange. Westminster is the most important part of the capital. It's the administrative centre. The
Houses of Parliament, the seat of the British Government, are there. It's a very beautiful building with
two towers and a very big clock called Big Ben. Opposite the Houses of Parliament is Westminster
Abbey. It's a very beautiful church built over 900 years ago. The West End is home to most of the big
shops, hotels, museums, art galleries, theaters and concert halls. Picadilly Circus is the heart of London's
West End. In the West End there are wide streets with beautiful houses and many parks, gardens and
squares. To the east of Westminster is the East End, an industrial district of the capital. There are no
parks or gardens in the East End and you can't see many fine houses there. Most of the plants and
factories are situated there.

once a royal hunting forest. This is a well-known park, as it is very close to Buckingham Palace, and it
offers breathtaking views of the Queen's residence. It was drained and landscaped at the end of the
seventeenth century.

drawbridge in central London, which is often confused with London Bridge. It was opened in 1894. This
bridge is a symbol of the capital.

London Madame Tussaud’s. The Sherlock Holmes Museum is located in the Westminster district of
London at 221b, Baker street. That's just the house with such a number has never existed. Sherlock
Holmes Museum is one of the most popular tourist attractions in London. The museum is interesting for
its interior, which is exactly reproduced from the stories of Arthur Conan Doyle.

Like every big city London has its traffic problems. At the same time London's public transport system is
not only one of the oldest in the world, but also one of the best. London is famous for its red double-
decker buses, black cabs and the London Underground. The London Underground train service or the

1863. Today the Tube has over 406 km of lines and 275 stations. As well as London’s regular bus
services, there are special double-decker buses, which take visitors on sightseeing tours of London’s
famous landmarks and tourist attractions. Taxis have existed in London since 1643. There are about
19000 cabs in London and 22000 drivers.
