If additional functions must be implemented at the drive inverter, use the following
Section "Commissioning the application". We recommend this procedure for
drives with a high dynamic response.

6.2 Commissioning the application

An application is commissioned to adapt/optimize the frequency inverter - motor
combination to the particular application. The frequency inverter offers numerous
functions - but not all of these are required for the particular application. These
functions can be skipped when commissioning the application. A large proportion
of the possible functions are described here; refer to the parameter list for
additional functions.
Parameters, designated with a * offer more setting possibilities than are actually
listed here. Refer to the parameter list for additional setting possibilities.

P1311 =...
Voltage boost for accelerating/braking as a % relative to P0305 and P0350. P1311 only
results in a voltage boost when ramping-up/ramp-down and generates an additional torque
for accelerating/braking. Contrary to parameter P1312, that is only active for the 1st
acceleration operation after the ON command, P1311 is effective each time that the drive
accelerates or brakes.

6.3 Series commissioning

An existing parameter set can be transferred to a MICROMASTER 420 frequency
inverter using STARTER or DriveMonitor (refer to Section 4.1 "Establishing
communications MICROMASTER 420 ⇔ STARTER").
Typical applications for series commissioning include:
1. If several drives are to be commissioned that have the same configuration and
same functions. A quick / application commissioning (first commissioning) must
be carried-out for the first drive. Its parameter values are then transferred to the
other drives.
2. When replacing MICROMASTER 420 frequency inverters.

3 Configuration Information

3.1 AS-Interface System

AS-Interface is a simple, cost efficient wiring system based on a 2 wire cable system for transferring data
and auxiliary power of sensors over a distance of up to 100m. System expansions > 100m are possible,
however, they require the use of repeaters.

The typical application is in the lower level of industrial automation for linking simple, mostly binary
sensors and actuators.
AS-Interface is a replacement for the conventional wiring between sensors, actuators, and the PLC.
Mechanisms integrated in the system render support during startup, operation, and maintenance.

Every AS-Interface system needs a control unit: the master. The master is available as PLC specific
module, PC card, or as gateway. The application program of the control or of the PC controls the process
via the master and the decentralized input and output modules, or slaves. The master independently
performs the cyclic exchange of information between master and slaves. According to the standard
specification, an AS-Interface network supports the operation of a maximum of 31 slaves. The extended
specification allows operating up to 62 slaves.

Basically there are active and passive modules.

Active modules are slaves with interfaces to conventional binary sensors and actuators. During each
cycle, 4 data bits, each in input and output, are transferred between master and slave. The specified
structure and length of the data telegrams enables the support of up to 124 inputs and 124 outputs
(standard specification).
The extended specification supports 248 inputs and 186 outputs.
Passive modules typically feature a standardized electromechanical interface (e.g. M12 round plug
connector) for direct connection of sensors and actuators with integrated AS-Interface to the fieldbus
cable.

Each slave has to be programmed as A or as B slave with a specific address in the range of 1 to 31 in
order to ensure a correct data exchange.
Address assignment can be made with an easy to use handheld programming device or through the
master.

AS-Interface products are generally marked by specific logos. This allows the distinction between certified
products and AS-Interface compliant products according to the manufacturer’s declaration.

Figure 3-1 : AS-Interface Figure 3-2 : Certification

V 2.4 13
Manual for Devices of the MASI68 Series

Due to the signal shape of the data transfer the wire ends require no terminators. The intelligent structure
of the data protocol offers the advantage of making AS-Interface systems extremely immune to
interferences. Thus, shielding the bus cable is not required.

The topology of AS-Interface systems can be compared to a conventional electrical installation. It can be
designed as linear topology, star topology, or tree topology.

Figure 3-3 : AS-Interface system topology

The cycle time depends on the level of expansion. The cycle time is about 5ms with maximum
configuration and 31 slaves. For a maximum configuration of 62 slaves, according to the extended
specification, cycle time amounts to approx. 10ms.

3.3 Information for Beginners

AS-Interface is a fieldbus system that meets industrial needs. Its advantages are the clarity of the system
and the easy handling of planning and applications.

In order to make access to the system even more safe and simple, we recommend proceeding according
to the following checklist:

Work phase Questions Comments

outputs are required in total? Interface systems are required.

3.4 Electrical Specification

3.4.1 System Cables

Depending on the requirements of different applications, the system wiring of the fieldbus can be done
3
with a round cable or with the yellow ribbon cable usually used with AS-Interface.

The cable structure is always 2 wire without PE wire. Due to transfer technology, it is not necessary to
use shielded cables.

Two electrical aspects are decisive for the selection of suitable transfer cables:
a) direct current resistance (cable cross-section)
because of the transfer auxiliary power
b) transfer characteristics
impedance from 80 to 120Ohms at 167 kHz

Additionally supplied auxiliary power is usually required for actuators. In order to benefit from the
4
advantages of simple installation by means of a ribbon cable , cables that have the same characteristics
are identified with different colors.

Cable

yellow - AS-Interface fieldbus system cable

black - 24V DC auxiliary power

Wires

brown - Fieldbus system cable (ASI+)

24V DC auxiliary power (+24V DC)
blue - Fieldbus system cable (ASI-)
24V DC auxiliary power (0V)

AS-Interface products with direct connection for ribbon cables have geometrical coding. This creates a
reliable protection against electrical reverse polarity.

AS-Interface flat profile cable

Figure 3-5: AS-Interface round cable acc. to DIN VDE 0281-5

If you don´t use a flat profile cable the capacity of 9 nF per 100 m must not be
exceeded.

The wire insulation of the standard profile cable is made of a rubber compound. For more demanding
applications, especially regarding chemical resistance, we supply cables with TPE or PUR insulation.
A typical application is a fixed system wiring in a rigorous environment of machines and installations.

Alternatively standard round cables with 2-wires can be used as transfer cable. This cable is specially
suitable for applications in C-tracks and wiring in control cabinets.

18 V 2.4
Manual for Devices of the MASI68 Series

3.4.2 System Power Supply

Figure 3-6: AS-Interface system power supplies

AS-Interface systems require a direct voltage power supply in the range of 29.5V to 31.6V DC that
has to meet the IEC regulations for “safty extra-low voltage with safe separation” (SELV).

Each AS-Interface segment requires a power supply of its own.

The integrated data decoupling unit is a major difference in conventional industrial power supplies. It is an
important requirement so that the connected cable can transfer both data and power.

V 2.4 19
Manual for Devices of the MASI68 Series

3.4.3 Voltage Drops

For maximum reliability and trouble-free operation, the supply voltage limits of the system have to be
observed.

In any case, it must be ensured that the system voltage measured at the remotest
slave does not drop below 26.5 V DC.

A voltage drop on the system cable is caused by the load current of the slaves and their sensors.

In critical cases, the problem can be solved by moving the system supply to
another place within the system or using system cables with a wider diameter
(only possible when using round cables).

AS-Interface modules with digital inputs allow direct connection with standard sensors. The supply
voltage required for operating the sensors is generated in the slave itself from the system supply by
means of a decoupling network.
Starting from the lowest reliable supply voltage at the slave and considering voltage drops in the slave, a
correct supply of the sensors is always guaranteed.

The sensor supply voltages from the AS-Interface modules supplied via the bus cable
are unearthed and must not be coupled.

3.4.4 Cable Diameters

The direct current resistance is important when selecting a suitable cable The following example
calculation will illustrate this.

Under the condition that:

 the cable length is 100 meter

 31 slaves are connected to the cable in regular spacing and
 all slaves require 65 mA power with a total current of 2 A
the following voltage drop between the feeding points of the power supply and the connection
point of the last slave will be:

Wire diameter 0,75 1,5 2,5

Direct current resistance in mOhm/m 52,0 26,6 16,0
Max. voltage drop in V 5,4 2,7 1,6
Table 3.4-1 : Influence of different wire diameters

20 V 2.4
Manual for Devices of the MASI68 Series

3.4.5 Auxiliary Power

Additionally supplied auxiliary power is usually required for actuators.

The information regarding voltage drops and wire diameters is also applicable for auxiliary power with
even higher currents.

In case of a short circuit at the output of a slave far away from the power supply of the
system, some slaves may report a lower voltage of the auxiliary power. This is the
result of a voltage drop caused by the high current in the cable.

3.5 Slave Profile

Each slave is characterized by a so called slave profile in order to enable a clear and functional
identification by the AS-Interface master. The relevant data can be found in the AS-Interface specification.
They consist of an ID code, 2 extended ID codes (ID1 code and ID2 code) and a configuration code for
inputs and outputs (IO code). These data characterize the function of the slave.

The slave profile is shown as follows: S-IO.ID.ID2 (e.g. : S-7.A.0). It is programmed by the manufacturer
and cannot be changed. The ID1 code, however, can be changed by the user with the command:
« Write_Extended_ID-Code_1 ». The default setting of the ID1 code is ‘F’ for a standard slave
respectively ‘7’ for an AB slave (ID=A).

All data of the slave profile (ID-, ID1-, ID2- and IO-Code) are an important requirement for an easy
exchange of slaves within an existing system. Based on these data, the master checks whether the
current configuration corresponds to the desired configuration.

have to remove the corresponding label plates using a screwdriver.

For the position of the mounting holes please see table 4-3 on page 25.

How to remove a label plate

Place the screwdriver at an angle to the small opening at the lable plate and lever the lable out.

 Attach the cable connected to the functional earth to mounting hole B. Use a cable lug with ring on
the module side to assure an appropriate connection between the functional earth and the module.
The connection to the functional earth must be kept as short as possible, in conformity with EMC
specifications.

 Attach the module to the two mounting points by means of the two fixing screws 4mm in diameter
(tightening torque: 2 Nm).

Some modules have more than 2 mounting holes. Preferably use the mounting holes A or B. The
(optional) mounting holes C are located to match the mounting holes of Murrelektronik passive
distribution boxes. This makes it easier to replace passive distribution boxes by MASI68 modules.
The mounting holes C can also be used to increase the mechanical stability, particularly in
environments subjected to vibrations.

 Reinsert the previously removed label plates into the corresponding recesses of the module by
applying slight pressure.

If the I/O modules are being mounted on Bosch profiles, special spike screws must be
used. These screws are necessary because the Bosch profiles are anodized and do
not allow for low-resistance connections to the earthing points.
It must also be ensured that the Bosch profiles themselves have a connection to the
FE and/or PE.

4.4 Wiring

We recommend to proceed as follows when wiring the MASI68 system:

.

 the functional earth of the module to the protective earth. See chapter 0. This step should be done
already during assembly.

 the peripheral connections of the modules. See chapter 4.4.2 and 4.4.3.

When screwing on the connections, you must apply the recommended torque. If
cables are not screwed tightly (fieldbus, internal system connection, I/O connections),
it often causes failures.
We recommend the use of the Murrelektronik torque wrench (see accessories) to
ensure correct assembly and the right torque.

CAUTION:
Misplacing the MASI68 modules in an installation may cause damage to person or
property.

Additional supply voltage may become necessary as soon as the energy

required by the AS-Interface slaves including the peripheral components
(sensors and/or actuators) cannot be covered by the energy taken from the bus
cable.

The power supply for the external supply voltage has to meet the requirements
according to IEC 364-4-41 (PELV).

V 2.4 35
Manual for Devices of the MASI68 Series

5 System Configuration

5.1 Addressing
Before operating the AS-Interface system, every slave has to be programmed with an address. This can
6
be done either offline by means of a programming device or online via the master. For instructions on
how to proceed please refer to the corresponding description.

Addresses are non-volatile: they remain stored in the slave even in case of
power cutoff due to an EEPROM.
Addressing is unlimited for these slaves.

According to the standard specification all figures from 1 to 31 are valid addresses.
For systems with up to 62 slaves according to the extended specification the address range is 1A to 31A
and 1B to 31B.

Operating AS-Interface systems according to the extended specification

requires suitable masters!
In principle, it is possible to operate slaves according to the standard
specification and slaves according to the extended specification together in the
same system.
In this case, take note that standard slaves are identified by the master as ‘A’
slaves. The unused, identical adress of group ‘B’, however, will not be available.

All new slaves not yet addressed have the address 0. They will be identified by the master, however, they
will not be integrated into the communication.
When slaves have to be replaced in a running system (maintenance, repair, etc.), the slave must have
the address 0 in order to allow automatic address assignment by the master (chapter 5.3
Autoconfiguration).

5.1.1 Cascading slaves

Every AS-Interface slave has a data capacity of 4 bits (4 inputs and 4 outputs). Therefore, DI8 modules
have 2 slaves each in order to create 8 inputs.
These slaves are cascading slaves.
Addressing the second slave is only possible, if the first slave has been assigned an address different
from 0 by the master or with the programming device.

5.1.2 Connection for programming devices

MASI68 modules can be programmed through the bus connection, either by the PLC or by using an
addressing device.
When using an addressing device the module has to be disconnected from main power and the
addressing device has to be connected to the M12 bus connection.

When addressing follow the instructions of the corresponding programming device.

Slaves have the default address 0.

Figure 5-1: Interface for addressing devices MASI68

DI8 modules have 2 cascading slaves each.

These modules cannot be addressed with an addressing device.

5.2 System Configuration

During configuration the system design is defined. The master must be in the configuration mode. In this
mode the master automatically identifies the slaves connected to the bus cable. The system
characteristics, profiles (ID-, ID1-, ID2-, IO code), and the slave address are stored in the master.

In case of system extensions differing from the AS-Interface specification it is

possible that some slaves will not be detected by the master.

As soon as the complete system is configured and the master is operating in “protected mode”,
differences in relation to the configured system can be automatically detected by the master. Typical
differences are slave failures, damaged bus cables, or system extensions.

Configuration can be done by means of a programming device or directly via the master. But the
procedures are different.

V 2.4 37
Manual for Devices of the MASI68 Series

5.2.1 Configuration with an AS-Interface Programming Device

 Assign the requested address to all slaves with the programming device.
(For slaves with addressing socket this can be done after step ).
 Install the slaves in the designated location and connect them with the system cable.
 Switch the master into configuration mode ( Master manual).
 Check if all slaves were detected and stored in the LDS (list of detected slaves) ( Master manual).
 Configure the system ( Master manual).
 Switch from configuration mode to protected mode ( Master manual).
 Check the master displays. The display ‘configuration error’ must not be active.
(Master manual).

5.2.2 Configuration via the AS-Interface Master

 Switch the master into configuration mode ( Master manual).
 Connect slave to the AS-Interface system cable.
 Change address of the slave via the master (Master manual).
 Repeat step  and  until all slaves are connected and addressed.
 Check if all slaves were detected and stored with the correct address in the LDS (list of detected
slaves) ( Master manual).
 Configure the system ( Master manual).
 Switch from configuration mode to protected mode ( Master manual).
Check the master displays. The display ‘configuration error’ must not be active.
(Master manual).

5.3 Autoconfiguration
In case of a slave failure while the system is running, the slave can be easily replaced by a new one.
Provided that:

 the master is in protected operating mode and automatic configuration is activated,

 only one slave failed,
 the new slave is assigned to address 0,
 the profile of the new slave is identical to the profile of the faulty slave as stored by the master,

the new slave will be automatically configured with the same address, stored in the master, as the faulty
slave.

Each DI8 module has 2 cascading slaves.

These modules cannot be addressed by means auf autoconfiguration.

6 Diagnostics

6.1 Displays
Diagnostic information is an important basis for easy startup. Errors can be quickly identified and
removed through thanks to clear information regarding the fieldbus system, the I/O module and its
peripheral components such as sensors and actuators.

All modules of the MASI68 series feature separate, clearly arranged displays for bus status,
device status, and I/O status. These displays are integrated into the front of the housing.

6.3 Behavior in Case of Overload/Short Circuit

6.3.1 Sensor / Actuator Supply

Short circuit or overload of the sensor supply is a peripheral fault (FID) of a slave that is indicated at the
master if the master corresponds to the AS-Interface specification 2.1.
 The peripheral fault is shown at the slave by the red LED “FAULT“ flashing. The slave continues to
function.
 The failures causes a current limit and a voltage drop: the sensors are no longer supplied.
 The peripheral fault is shown at the master by the LED “CONFIG ERR“ flashing.

After troubleshooting:
 The error status at the slave will be deleted (the red LED “FAULT“ is off).
 The sensors are supplied again.
 The error state at the master will be deleted.

6.3.2 Outputs
Short circuit or overload of the sensor supply is a peripheral fault (FID) of a slave that is indicated at the
master if the master corresponds to the AS-Interface specification 2.1.
 The peripheral fault is shown at the slave by the red LED “Fault“ flashing. The slave continues to
function.
 The output with short circuit is disconnected from mains via the output driver.
 The peripheral fault is shown at the master by the LED “CONFIG ERR“ flashing.

After troubleshooting:
 The error status at the slave will be deleted (the red LED “FAULT“ is off).
 The output is reset (output state at the AS-Interface bus).
 The error state at the master will be deleted.
