GROUP ASSIGNMENT 1

OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH
SEMESTER 1 2021/2022

Engineer's roles and duties in terms of safety and health

1. Specific Instruction:
a. This work will be completed in a group setting.
b. Each group may have a maximum of five members.
c. ONE TIME ONLY, submit a group report assignment in a SINGLE FILE.
d. Submission date: By 13th January 2022.
e. This assignment is worth 10% of the course's overall grade. .
f. The group leader is accountable for submitting the assignment ONLY ONCE in a
SINGLE file.

2. Things To Do:
• Locate and watch a film containing incidents involving safety and health issues in a
genuine workplace, public facility, or environment that occurred recently in Malaysia
or during the last five (5) years (select one [1] video only as a case study). Ascertain
that the video is no longer than ten minutes in length.
• Understand the video, analyse it, and write a critical review by gathering additional
information about it through interviews (interviews conducted online or via another
media platform are acceptable), journals, books, conference proceedings, technical
reports, news reports, broadcast/tv reports, or company magazine/profile. There is no
requirement for a site visit.
• Correlate the findings of the case study to applicable Occupational Safety and Health
Act (OSHA) 1994, Factories and Machinery Act (FMA) 1967, Environmental Quality
Act (EQA) 1974, and/or Occupational Health, Safety, and Environment Management
System standards/guidelines. WP1
• Recognize and debate issues concerning safety, health, and the environment. WP1
• Consider socioeconomic, health, safety, and cultural considerations, as well as the
associated duties for professional engineering practise. WP2
• Investigate moral dilemmas and provide ethical solutions to situations. WP3
• Complete a thorough report (maximum 10 pages excluding Appendices). The
following is a proposed outline for the report and presentation:

3. Outcomes
• A comprehensive report (with proper in-text citations and references)
i. Each group is expected to submit the report (softcopy) in Week 14 by 13th
January 2022 before 3.30 pm. The softcopy report can be submitted to the
web-based platform identified by the lecturers (either Dropbox, Edmodo,
UTHM Author, Google Drive or etc.).
ii. Language: English

4. Assessment criteria (10 marks)

• Ethics - Demonstrate an understanding of moral responsibilities of an engineer


related to safety and health (CLO2, PLO8, LOD16) – 10%
