Final Reflection

The Capstone is a unique and demanding challenge. In completing it, what did you learn about your
subject? Your skill set? Yourself?

When I had initially begun my capstone I went into it thinking that it would be a breeze and that I won’t
need to worry about it since the topic I chose was so close to my heart. For the most part it was fairly
attainable and I didn’t have to research much, however, once it came down to the fundamentals and the
way our bodies work during the time when we are playing was quite fascinating. I learned that there is a
lot that goes on behind the scenes with our bodies that doesn’t get showcased when we are having fun.
After reading about different muscle groups that are in use during the sport, I began integrating some
workouts that would improve my gameplay. This showed me that no matter what you enjoy doing or
what your greatest hobbies are, you are bound to always learn something new even if you think you are
an expert.

How is your project relevant to you, the school or the community-at-large?

The reason I chose this topic was for one main reason. When I had initially joined my first hockey league
I was by far one of the worst players on my team, and the reason I know this is because I could see the
difference in how others treated me when I finally began to improve. What I realized is that if I had
someone to show me the basics before I was put in a team, I could have been at a head start or better
than what I was in reality. So I took this idea and implemented it with our capstone, and am hopefully
going to get the ‘OK’ from the president of the hockey league to showcase my videos on their website
for the people who need them.

How did you demonstrate the six Core Competencies throughout this project? (See
attached Core Competency sheet)

For Personal Awareness and Responsibility, one of the ways I had demonstrated this was by asking for
help when I needed it the most. Whether if be from a teacher or friends, if I needed help I would try my
best to get it. For Social Responsibility, the way I demonstrated this was by looking at others’ research
on hockey and attempting to implement the best pieces of advice to my research. For Critical Thinking, I
demonstrated this by making sure that I was doing the work and trying my best not to leave the project
for last minute as I was warned by many of the grads from the previous year not to make that same
mistake. For the Creative Thinking core competency, my choice for the capstone was the way I
demonstrated this core competency, for I chose something that no one to my knowledge has done
before. For Communication, the way I demonstrated it was by effectively showcasing my learning to
others in the form of these short yet impactful videos. And finally, for Personal and Cultural Identity, the
way I demonstrated this was by making sure that the whole time I was doing this capstone was to
always remember why I was doing it, not only for myself but to also help others in the community.

What impact if any did your Capstone project have?

The impact that my capstone had, or at least what I want it to have is not only on the materialistic side
of things, but also on the motivational side. What I mean by this is, sure watch the videos to improve
your game, but also watch the videos as a sign of motivation to create something for the benefit of
others. I want to motivate people to go out and try to make a difference in something they believe in. I
had always wanted to make videos to help people and I finally got the chance to do that with this
capstone project.

Thinking about the whole process and your finished product, what are you most proud of?

The thing I am most proud of is that I had to make do with a tremendous amount of obstacles along the
way. The biggest being going on vacation to Calgary to visit my family. And even with all these obstacles,
I was still able to finish the project.

What was a difficulty you encountered and how did you solve the problem?

The biggest difficulty was the whole vacation. Normally the people I spoke with got majority of their
project done in the break, however since I was on vacation, I had to do whatever I needed to in order to
complete the project.

What is one thing about your finished project you wish you could change? Why?

The one thing I wish I would have done was invest in a proper editing software. The program I had used
initially was quite good however when it came to the final product there was a huge watermark on my
videos. Because I had the free version of the software. Which lead me to using iMovie.

What advice would you give to a student who will be completing their Capstone Project next year?

If your teacher gives you time in class, use that time wisely because it’s a privilege not a necessity.

What source from your research helped you the most? (or least?).

The source that helped me the most was definitely real life NHL games. They’re the best of the best and
when you can watch and analyze the way in which they play, you can genuinely make an improvement
to your game, and this applies for everything. If you watch the best of the best, you will play like the
best of the best.

What is one thing about your approach to your project that you wish you could change? Why?

I wish I could have make the videos a bit funnier as the target audience was children. The reason being is
because if I had made them funnier, the kids would be more intrigued and invested.
