PROBLEMS OF CHAPTER 1
FLOW & LOSSES IN PIPES

1. A commercial steel pipeline AB ( k= 0.006cm) is required to transmit

11 lit/s of petrol, (S.G. =0.75, μ =0.005 poise) from A to B. The first part
of the line is is 10cm diam. and 1km long with one bend (c=0.6). The
second part at is 20cm diam. and 500m long with two bends (c=0.7). The
last part is 15cm diam. and 2km long with a gate valve (c=0.2). If the
pressure at B is 5kg/cm2 . Find the necessary pressure A.

2. Determine the flow of water through the new cast iron pipe shown in
figure below. What is the pressure head at B which is 30m from the
reservoir A. Sketch the energy and the hydraulic gradient lines.
For AC line length =60m, diam. =30cm.
For CD line length =30m, diam.=15cm
Head loss at point C is 15cm, k=0.03cm, 0.01poise.

3. For the system shown in figure below, when the flow from reservoir A
to main C is 0.1424 m3 /s, the pressure at C is 1.38 bar. The flow to C
should be increased to 0.186 m3/s, with a pressure of 2.76 bar. What is the
size of a pipe 1524 m long, which should be laid from B to C (shown
dotted) parallel to the existing 305 mm to accomplish this result. Sketch
the total energy line in both cases neglecting the secondary losses.
