1.Give five Social thinkers and describe each ( 10 points )

Jose Rizal - the Filipino national hero, can be considered as one of the greatest Filipino social thinkers
during the nineteenth century. Syed Farid Alatas (2010) considers Rizal as the first systematic social
thinker in Southeast Asia because his writings can be used as the basis of sociological theories and
concepts.

Claro M. Recto - was a Filipino statesman, jurist, poet and one of the foremost statesmen of his
generation. He is remembered for his nationalism, for "the impact of his patriotic convictions on modern
political thought", and has been seen in the same class as Dr.

Apolinario Mabini - Mabini acted as the chief adviser of President Emilio Aguinaldo in 1898. His influence
was evident in the proclamation changing the form of government of the Philippines from being a Dictatorial
Government to a Revolutionary Government.

Isabelo De Los Reyes - had his first brush with socialism during his stay in Barcelona, where he mingled
with anarchists, syndicalists, socialists, and other ideological thinkers. The new way of thinking resonated
with him, and on his return, he set out to organize the workers of Manila.

2. 10 Definition of Terms ( 10 points )

Class conflict - also referred to as class struggle and class warfare, is the political tension and economic
antagonism that exists in society consequent to socio-economic competition among the social classes or
between rich and poor.

Capitalists - a wealthy person who uses money to invest in trade and industry for profit in accordance with
the principles of capitalism.

Economism- belief in the primacy of economic causes or factors.

Materialism - is a form of philosophical monism which holds matter to be the fundamental substance in
nature, and all things, including mental states and consciousness, are results of material interactions.

Infrastructure - the basic physical and organizational structures and facilities (e.g. buildings, roads, power
supplies) needed for the operation of a society or enterprise.

Feminism - the advocacy of women's rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes.

Liberal feminism - also called mainstream feminism, is a main branch of feminism defined by its focus on
achieving gender equality through political and legal reform within the framework of liberal democracy.

Radical feminism - is a perspective within feminism that calls for a radical reordering of society in which
male supremacy is eliminated in all social and economic contexts.

Women's Liberation Movement (WLM) - was a political alignment of women and feminist intellectualism
that emerged in the late 1960s and continued into the 1980s primarily in the industrialized nations of the
Western world.

Gendered institutions - means that gender is present in the processes, practices, images and ideologies,
and distri- butions of power in the various sectors of. social life.

3. Mabini's Decalogue ( 10 points )

First- Love God and your honor over all things: God, as the source of all truth, all justice, and all activity.
Second- Worship God in the form of your conscience that God speaks to you, reproaching you for your
misdeeds.
Third- Develop the special talents that God has given you, working and studying according to your
capabilities, never straying from the path of good and justice, in order to achieve your own perfection.
Fourth- Love your country after God and your honor, and more than you love yourself, because your
country.
Fifth- Strive for the happiness of your country before your own, making her the reigning influence.
Sixth- Strive for the independence of your country, because you alone can have a real interest in her
aggrandizement and ennoblement.
Seventh- In your country, do not recognize the authority of any person who has not been elected by you
and your compatriots.
Eighth- Strive that your country be constituted as a republic, and never as a monarchy: a monarchy
empowers one.
Ninth- Love your neighbor as you love yourself, because God has imposed on him and on you the
obligation to help one another.
Tenth- Always look on your countryman as more than a neighbor: you will find in him a friend, a brother.
