DYQ20053 - LIVE FEED CULTURE

TOPIC 1:
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Live feed culture
1.2 The importance of live feed
1.3 Technology in live feed culture industry
OBJECTIVES :
Upon completion of this topic, students should be able to:

1) Explain live feed culture.

2) Classify live feed culture (phytoplankton & zooplankton).

3) Describe the importance of live feed in early culture stages.

4) Explain technology in live feed culture industry

TECHNOLOGY IN LIVE FEED CULTURE INDUSTRY

 Does our country have LIVE FEED CENTRES for aquaculture industry?

 How to prevent shortage of Artemia as the main living source of fish /

shrimp larvae?

 How to replace fishmeal as main protein

in fish pellets?
TECHNOLOGY IN LIVE FEED CULTURE INDUSTRY

 Production of live feed is mandatory in hatchery as it is basic and nutritious

diet for fish/shrimp larvae.

 However, its mass production is generally costly due to huge manpower,

space requirements and operation which usually related to the cost of the
energy used such as light, water heater and aeration.

ALGAE PHOTOBIOREACTOR

A photobioreactor is a
bioreactor that utilizes a light
source to cultivate
phototrophic
microorganisms. These
organisms use photosynthesis
to generate biomass from
light and carbon dioxide
and include plants,
macroalgae, microalgae,
and cyanobacteria.

Bioenrichment of plankton

 Promoting growth and survival

imposing requirement of more
nutrients of fish larvae.
 Bioenrichment means addition of
nutrients to living organisms in order to
supply the specific nutrient by means
of exogenous approach. Nutrients
might be considered as vitamins,
unsaturated fatty acids etc. This
process involves in improving the
nutritional status of live feed.

Alternatives live feed protein sources?

 Black Soldier Fly larvae
 Azolla (Duckweed)
 Microworm

Black Soldier Fly Larvae, Hermetia illucens

Black Soldier Fly larvae had been culture

as a protein source to feed fish larvae.
BSF adults do not have functional mouth
parts, they do not eat waste, they do not
regurgitate on human food, and
therefore, they are not associated in any
way with the transmission of disease.
