THE FACTORS RESPONSIBLE FOR PUPILS LATENESS TO

SCHOOL IN PRIMARY SCHOOL

1
ABSTRACT

This study was designed to find out those factors that are

responsible for pupils lateness to school in Agabi primary school

in Orhionmwon Local Government Area of Delta State. The

incessant occurrence of chart and some time criminal behaviour

not only by the audit population, but also the students of this

country in recent times has since began to give cause of

concern, particularly to parents, government and school

administrators. Questionnaires from a sample of four (4)

primary school, students consisting of (hundred) primary school

students selected at random from Orhionmwon Local

Government Area of Delta State were analysed. It was found or

observed that the parents or audience, societal customs and

ways of life, can one way or the other causes students lateness

to school. It was recommended that parents and audience

should try as much as possible to send their children to school

on time and the pupils should try and live home early to school.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Lateness to school started long ago, every where in a way

that cannot be controlled in recent time. The problem of

lateness has eaten deep into Nigeria children the problem of

pupils lateness to school has now turn to national problem.

Lateness merely means arriving after expected time.

Children commonly miss their school or coming lately

because of their usual habits, such as waking up late due to

laziness: rushing of undone assignment, unprepared bath,

breakfast or meals, clothes, their pack lunch etc. and waiting

for companions or friends coming to school the bus is late; and

sometimes because of some problems in their parent that

affects them and interest in coming to school seeing their with

misunderstandings. A financial support is another too. Kids like

having many delightful possessions. They would be and seeing

3
their class mates with something they don’t have or sometimes

they are ashamed of coming to school.

Oxford advanced learners dictionary defined lateness as

arriving after the expected arrange or usual time. It is after the

right, fixed, usual or expected time; therefore lateness is the

opposite of early. The question now is what are the factors

responsible for pupil’s lateness to school.

Authorities have wonder why scholars come late to school.

But they have not been able to make deep research into this

problem in a bid of providing solutions and recommendation,

which would help to cure the problem.

This study will focus attention on the factors responsible for

the pupil’s lateness and an attempt to finding solution to this

problem.

4
1.2 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Lateness among school pupils is increasing and spreading.

Everywhere is a way that cannot be controlled in our societies.

A close look at the factors that are responsible for it, it’s the

purpose of the study.

The importance of this can never be over liked in the process

of learning experience had shown that children who are

habitual late comer never do well in their academics, this is

true because before their arrival it is very likely for them

missing some steps in the teaching/learning process. This will

affect their learning adversely.

Inspite of the efforts made by the teachers and the school

authorities to solve this problem. The children where still found

indulging in late coming in an attempt to know the factors

responsible the teachers attributed it to the parents while the

parents hold the teacher to ransom. To some others, the

5
children themselves and the peers group influence are

responsible.

With the result of this study, it is believed that solutions to

this problem will be provided as the factors responsible for the

lateness are identified and recommendations are made. The

children will be better guided and ways of overcoming their

problems and like up to expectation as good children are know.

In addition, this study will also help the nation as the

children will now develop the spirit of punctuality at school and

becomes good citizen in their future life.

1.3 OBJECTIVE OF STUDY

The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors that

are responsible for pupil’s lateness to school and re-address the

problem by providing possible suggestion, re7commendation

and solution, which relate to pupils lateness to school.

1.4 RESEARCH QUESTION

6
1. Does the distance between the pupils’ home and the

school contribute to lateness to school?

2. Does lateness in waking up from sleep in the morning lead

to lateness to school?

3. Does delay in preparation of food on time by parents

contribute to lateness to school?

4. Does demand for needed school materials in the morning

time lead to lateness to school?

5. Does lateness to school by teachers influence pupils

lateness to school?

6. Does waiting for friends to get prepared lead to lateness to

school?

7. Does hawking in the morning time before preparing to

school lead to lateness to school?

8. Does playing on the way to school lead to lateness to

school?

7
9. Does lack of performing well in school lead to lateness to

school?

1.5 SIGNIFANCE OF STUDY

On successful completion of this study pupils and parents

will be exposing to the various factors that are responsible for

pupils lateness to school and to the rightful measure necessary

to eradicate this bad habit.

This study will help to motivate parents to make the

children come early to school and this will in turn improve the

academic performance of the individual.

Also it will enable the pupils to be discipline both at school

and in future life.

1.6 SCOPE AND LIMITATION

This study is done within four (4) selected primary school

in OrhionmwonLocal Government Area of Delta State. The

names of the selected schools is Agabi Primary school.

1.7 LIMITATION OF STUDY

8
The study will be done with four primary schools in Ethiop

East Local Government Area of Delta State. The population in

which this investigation will be carried out will be small due to

insufficient time and lack of finance on the part of the research

in terms of funding the research work.

1.8 DEFINITION OF TERMS

FACTORS: - This refers to the conditions that affect the

behaviour and development of the physical conditions that exist

in the pupils learning environment.

LATENESS: - This refers to pupils getting to class daily, below

the normal time schedule for the class.

PEER INFLUENCEL: - This refers to the bad company of

children a child associate with, which affect the way the child,

behaves and thinks.

PARENTAL IGNORANCE: - This refers to the negative attitude

of some parents who negative attitude of some parents who

back the knowledge and importance of providing their children

9
with education. This is because they are not aware of fast

changing world of science and technology in which they live.

10
CHAPTER TWO

LITERATURE REVIEW

The issue of pupil’s lateness to school has been a

persisting problem among the pupils in OrhionmwonLocal

Government Area in particular and the nation in general. In this

chapter therefore the researchers will sort out some ideas,

opinions and views of some authors, which are geared towards

examining the factors that are responsible for lateness of pupils

in primary schools.

This chapter will include some possible assumed major

factors that are responsible for pupils lateness to school such as

home, society, peer group and the school indiscipline as they

affect pupils schooling.

2.1 INFLUENCE OF THE HOME ON CHILD SCHOOLING

The home is an important factor that affects the child

schooling or any other aspect of up bringing. The behaviour of

11
individual child or children depends on the various homes they

come from or belongs.

Omozeghian G.E (2002) states that it is the functions of

the home, sociologically to get the child ready to school. The

home is expected to get the child ready for school every

morning get him or her to get the bath and prepared for school.

The home should get the breakfast ready and ask the child to

leave for school in the morning. They should provide the mean

if possible. If there are done the child should have been

motivate enough to check the incidence of late coming to

school.

According to him a child whose parents do not have time

to check the schooling of their children expose such children to

all sorts of unwanted behaviour and social problems. This can

adversely affect their academic performance or achievement.

Delinquency which is a pattern of response that is most

frequently characterized by personality theorist as aggressive

12
and anti-social is one of the common behaviour among late by

some social factors, which is responsible for.

Harrient Wilson (2000) is of the view that children

delinquency is as a result of broken homes and inadequate

caring. Due to this effect children from broken homes are more

likely to play on the way and go to school late. It is a fact that

children from broken homes appears to have poorer adjustment

than children from unbroken homes.

This means that children from broken homes lack that

care among relationship and this creates a felling of insecurity

which will in turn affect the child development thereby making

such a child to come late to school. any child entering school

which is a new environment to him should have developed that

ability of adjusting to the different etc.

And children from broken homes might have received the

negative aspect of these situations as such he cannot associate

and this will make the child unhappy when coming to school.

13
Moloji (2003) another distinguished educationist said that

the emotional state of a child could be a cause for his lateness

to school. The writers statement here implies that chronic

emotional disturbance in a child obviously does interfere with

his learning process. The child grows in constant fear of

watching gradual breaking up of his parents marriage. This

could be seen more in children who are loved and cared for by

their parents turn out to be dangers to their lives by

endangering their love, peace, happiness in the family and also

the care which was existing before the trouble started.

These children are sort of abandoned because he or she

has to prepared in morning before going to school. Children are

also much more likely to misbehave when their parent do not

show proper interest for them.

Taylor (2001) states that children from secured homes

with parents who show interest on them are much less likely to

misbehave seriously, from this views secured home which

14
means home where the parent are living without persistent

quarrel. In such home where there are persistent quarrel

between the parent and the children, they are likely to have

discomfort and this will always score them from the homes,

there will be also persistent lateness to school. he also explain

that certain offences among male from broken homes and

discomfort homes are stealing and persistent play on the way

neither from school or home. While that of girls are sexual

promiscuous, stealing and being beyond control.

Another cause of lateness among school pupils are also

result of parents not staying at home with their children at the

early age. Before the school age, the child has grown to

become truant.

Lovell (2001) also says that the parent social-economic

status has effects on the child social economic status and this

has to do with financial position and background of pupils

homes that is to say, if a person has parent with a sound social

15
economic background is to say there is the tendency that such

a child will come early to school since his parents are able to

provide him will all his need on the other hand in a situation

where parents cannot afford to provide the basic needs, such as

child will not be happy with his academic work, thereby come to

school at wish.

Some of the pupils from poor home to help their parents

in hawking in the morning before coming to school, in such a

case the child is bound to come late to school.

2.2 THE EFFECT OF SCHOOL

The school also determines the Childs or children

INDISCIPLINE ON THE CHILD

Activities in a school system where there are no effective

discipline the pupils are likely not to be discipline and this lead

to lateness to school;

Bayo (2000) states that order is heaven first low, it is also first

law in a good school for without it school cannot achieve it

16
goals and objectives. Bayo went further to explain the duties of

teachers to his class pupils that when there is disorder in the

class the teacher looses inspiration around much time trying to

secure attention and do very little affective teaching. He also

point out that in a school where there is good discipline order to

secure with ease the through of the teacher is geared towards

how best to convey his ideals to the minds of the pupils. He is

against old fashioned school, where children are to remain quite

and nation less with their arms folded while being fortuned

because it is not a national posture for them. For this the

regard the school as a house of torment and feel reluctant while

going there. This is to say that condition under which the

children are to learn must be conducive. When children find

nothing of interest in the school, they are bound to be outside

to satisfy themselves then go back home.

Adeyomo (2002) states that if the child finds great interest

and purpose in activities outside the school he stop to enjoy

17
himself until he returns home. An effective teaching in the

school will also encourage children early attendance to school,

if the method is ineffective, the children will become restless

and seek other outlet for the use of their energy.

Goodman (2003) says for a variety of reasons the school

seen not be meeting this lead to negative behaviour towards

the school system. Eventually the children keep behind play

truancy and dropout of school at the end. Since the children did

not gain any at the end. They go to school at their will, lateness

and other associated offences are due to the school, the child is

attending. On the order hand they supported the view that

parents themselves have their own share of the blame as a

result, the home school and the community as well as the

society should help in the up bringing not only of the child but

also the adolescence.

2.3 THE INFLUENCE OF THE SOCIETY ON THE CHILD

18
The society which the children lives has an important role

to play in the child’s upbringing. In a society where the adults

do not keep to time schedule for any occasion definitely the

child will also copy this behaviour furthermore, if the society

takes joy in night engagement the children within that society

will not be left out and this will lead ton pupils waking up late

as a result of this, The children will go late to school with

particular references to males children who engage themselves

in watching films at night in a film show hall, these children do

not sleep on time and for that reason they will not wake up

early to get ready for school, such children must be constant

late covers.

Adegomo (2002) says that he might be keeping late hours

in the night and so does not rise early enough to be ready for

school.

The society is bound to be made up of different individual

these individual have their ways of living as a result of different

19
people living in the world, the society is bound to be made of

various behaviour both good and bad. The bad behaviour such

as delinquency. Crimes and so on are much likely to influence

children made of behaviour. These behavioral patterns may

result in children being uncontrollable which may lead to their

lateness to school

ENVIRONMENT FACTOR

The environment and the society work hand in hand the

environment of the child is another factor which contributes to

the child or children lateness to school.

Adigwe (2000) wrote while commenting about the

environment and school once said “that the distance between

the school and the home is so far that the children after

trecking the long distance will not be able to come to school

early and that child will not be able to learn effectively in the

class because the child is tired after the trecking to school.

20
Unfortunately in most rural areas like Ovia South west

local government area of Edo state, the use of vehicle for town

services is not in practice as each children from near by villages

who attended school in the headquarter are usually known as

late comers in the school due to the distance between the

school and their homes. Such children are not performing well

in terms of academic they either have weak pass or fail totally.

PEER GROUP INFLUENCE

Peer group another factors to be considered when

discussing the deviant behaviour among children, it is a world

of its own where children of the same age group meet together

for a common objective.

It also has its own rules and regulations, which bound the

entire member’s together children do not find themselves

belonging to group for the fun of it but for a special purpose

that is bounding the entire members. Such example are going

to school playing and doing any other activity together, peer

21
group influence pupils deviant behaviour with special reference

to lateness to school. When a child is in a group of friends who

do not go to school early the child we also go late because of

waiting for the friends to get prepared or play on their way to

school.

Adeyomo (2001) states that a child keeps bad company

and on the way wait for his friends who do not care when they

arrive at school when a child is in the group of truants, who do

not take schooling serious. It can lead to children lateness to

school and becoming drop out or suspected from school. There

is a common saying that “tell me your friends and I will tell you

whom you are” the word peer groups define the kind of

individual the person is.

Therefore, peer group has positive and negative influence

on a child. It is negative when the abnormal behaviour is being

copied from the friends and positive when a child changes from

22
the abnormal behaviour due to a friends influence. While

discussing both the positive, negative influence of peer group.

Nacunly (2004) states that acceptance by peers is not all

good nor is rejection all bad, according to his achievement of

an adult apparently depends to say extent on back of

involvement with peers.

IGNORANCE ON THE PART OF PARENTS

You will observe that literates parents know the

importance of their children education having gone through

formal educational system. They know the dangers of their

children going to school late. But some parents are ignorance of

this.

Johnson D Theny (2005) on authors once said that parents

are a potent by frequency uncapped sources of motivation.

Parents who know how, when and what this means that

motivation of parents can been seen as a way to overcome

lateness to school thus this saying above by the writer is true

23
since one cannot impact the knowledge he did not acquire. This

implies that some parent back the knowledge and important of

providing their children with education. They implies that some

parents back the knowledge and important of providing their

children with education. They do not know what is taking place

in the world since there confirm to their locality as such there is

nothing like future plans for their children. If parents have little

or no time for their children there is the tendency of much

children behaving the way they like a such the time they would

have got ready and go to school early they spend it roaming

the street only to go to school late.

Some parents over pamper their children no reason and

these children becomes spoil children. They do what they feel

like doing it. Get such parents do not care, since they feel that

it is a way of showing love not knowing the child’s future is

being ruined. When the child come late to school they feel there

is no problem with the above mentioned, ignorance on the part

24
of parents is seen as one of the factors responsible for lateness

to school.

25
CHAPTER THREE

METHODOLOGY

This chapter deals with research methodologies such as a

sample and sample subject, research instrument. Data

collection and statistical techniques.

3.1 SAMPLE AREA OR STUDY LOCATION

This area was carried out in some primary schools in

OrhionmwonLocal Government Area. The schools chosen for the

study is Agabi Primary School these chosen schools are located

in OrhionmwonLocal Government Area of Edo state.

3.2 POPULATION AND SUBJECTS SAMPLE

The subject sample for this study consisted of hundred

(25) primary school pupils. Their ages rang from 6-12 years

including male and female sex.

The selection was done randomly in each school and

selected twenty five (25) pupils were sampled in each school of

which 15 were boys and 10 girls.

10 questions drawn from the selected ten (10) research

questions.

Dimension of response ranged from yes to no for the

answering of the questions. The questionnaire was given out to

both boys and girls of the four (4) selected schools.

In analyzing the data to be collected the researcher used

simple addition, subtraction, division and multiplication to find

the percentage of respondents as the need arises Description

method will be used in discussion and interpretation of result

where the details of the finding will be discussed.

Finally, analysis description and questionnaire methods will be

the instrument for data collection or research instrument.

3.3 DATA COLLECTION PROCEDURE

27
Questionnaire was used to gather data concerning the

factor that are responsible for pupil’s lateness to school in

OrhionmwonLocal Government Area.

The researcher went round to ensure that the

questionnaires were properly administered. The class or

categories are boys and girls of every primary school sample.

3.4 DESCRIPTION OF STATISTICAL TECHNIQUES

The statistical method which was used in the study is chi-

square, it involve simple calculation of figure. This is fir

effective analysis for the data used with reference to the

research questions formulated.

33
CHAPTER FIVE

DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION

5.1 INTERPRETATION AND DISCUSSION OR RESULT

After the administration of the text and the eventual

analysis of the data, the following findings were obtained. The

most factors responsible for pupils lateness to school generally

is the influence of the peer group they often wait for their

friends to get prepared before getting to school. What this

means is that a child who probably leaving home very early

with all the needed school materials could be late if he decided

to call on wait fro his friends (peer group) to get prepared the

researcher observed this from the responses gathered from the

pupils when the question was asked. Do you wait for your

friends to get prepared before coming to school? As much as 41

respondents said yes, while only 34 said no.

Another major factors that is responsible for pupils

lateness to school as found by the researcher as the distance

34
between the pupils home and the school, the location of some

school is very far from the pupils home, thereby making them

to treck long distance even if they do not hawk in the morning

or wait for their friends they will still be late to school.

Furthermore, the parents of this pupils delay in preparing

food on time, this can also make them to late, if their parents

decide not to give them money to buy something on their way

to school and eat immediately they get to school, because the

pupils will not like to go to school with an empty stomach, so

the child will like to wait till the food will be ready.

 Another reason why pupils go late to school is that

pupils demand for needed school material in the

morning instead of demanding for it in the evening

before going to bed.

 Another factor responsible for pupil’s lateness to

school is the teacher lateness to school.

35
What this means is that if a teacher is always coming late

to school, the pupils are likely to do some, if you as a child who

goes late to school, because the teacher also goes late to

school, he or she will simple tell you because my aunty or uncle

always go late to school tell me how can pupils knows that what

they are doing is bad when they have not been corrected and

how can they be corrected, when who is supposed to correct

them (teacher) is also doing the same a teacher cannot correct

a child when he or she is also guilty of what he or she is

suppose to correct that child of so teachers lateness is

responsible.

 In another development, many of the pupils go late to

school is because the punishment given to those that are

late is not heavy enough this implies that some of the

pupils do not regard the punishment as that will “ let us

not hurry” it is not only some strokes of cane. I can

36
receive years, if that be the case from the data analysis as

much as 70% agreed for an increase of the punishment.

 Another reason why pupils go late to school is because

they do not go to school bed on time, thereby making

them to wake up very late. Some of them go for wake up

very late some of them go to wake keep, do hard work

etc. these make them feel very tired in the morning.

 Furthermore, many of them don’t’ do well in academic

work. This also lead to pupils lateness to school, because if

a pupils is not performing well in academic work, he or she

will not like to come to school, especially those the aunty

normally disgrace when ever they perform poorly in the

class, by asking the other pupils to shame them such

pupils will not like to go to school and some of them, when

they tell their parents at home, the problem they are

facing in the class their parents will insist that they must

37
go to school and they themselves will be saying no, so at

the time of that argument they will be late for school.

 Another major factors that is responsible for pupils

lateness to school as found by the researcher is that

parents do send their children out for morning duties.

Notable among others are hawking and going to fetch water

from the stream or going in search of water from the tap.

From the data 43 respondents out 75 pupils said pupils

said yes, that they go out for hawking and when they return

they quickly prepared for school. Usually they are already late

at home before leaving for school; some even said that they

cannot remember when they were not late on their market

days. We must try and go to farm to harvest plantain or

cocoyam for sale in the morning on market day before leaving

for school.

38
A child who is always late to school always misuses

morning devotion (assembly and sermon), such a child is

unlikely to do well morally and in examination.

Another reason why pupils go late to school is because

they play on their way to school, they often play on their way

to school, they often play with their friends on their way to

school, they may probably leave home on time with the needed

school materials but they could be late, if they decide to play

on their way to school, and as they are going they will be

walking like a snail (very sluggish in walking) that will make

them to be late.

The researcher further gathered that beside the factors

highlighted above there are some other factors that can make

pupil go late to school, they include

a. Preparing the younger ones.

b. Lack of ideal of time.

c. Lack of interest in schooling

39
d. Means of transportation

e. Sluggish movement

Some ways to check this lateness.

a. Sending any latecomers home.

b. Giving enough work to late comers to occupy them during

the day.

c. Making of register in the morning and immediately after

long break.

d. Giving price to the pupils that have the highest attendance

as marked in the class.

e. Needed school materials should be given the pupils in the

evening before going to bed.

f. Teach should stop disgracing those performing poorly in

the class.

g. Parents should wake their children up early and prepared

food for them early.

40
h. Teachers should stop coming late to school in order to

show good examples.

i. Parents should stop involving their children in morning

duties.

5.2 LIMITATION

It was the mind of the researcher to the primary schools is

the local government area of Delta State, but unfortunately it

was not possibly mainly because of finance time and bad road,

and transportation were very high. In some of the villages, it

can only be reached by vehicle and it can only go there on

market day as a result of these things only three schools were

listed.

5.3 IMPLICATION

From the result got so far the educational implication of

this study are as follows;

41
Those pupils that move with bad ones shall one day

become bad, they will not longer get to school fail in their

examination and become dropout. This will constitute a

nuisance and unemployment in the society, parents or guidance

can bound some bad school children that associate with

children from coming to their houses. This will help to reduce

the habit of lateness and produce good citizen in the society.
