CORPUZ NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL SUCCESS STORIES IN READING

I. INTRODUCTION

The COVID-19 virus has greatly affected the whole world as its severity made changes in the
normality of life. ‘New Normal’ set up is an effect of its mutation that impacted the lives of many,
from the limitation of mobility of people to creation of boundary and distance in interaction which
has challenged the field of education.

There were adjustments being made when it comes to instruction. Age-based restrictions
were made by the Philippine Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF), the management responsible in
developing guidelines in the country, which emphasized that, those who are aged 20 and below are
not allowed to be out of their homes regardless of the nature of their transactions. Therefore, this
has challenged the teachers in the Department of Education (DepEd) with regards to the delivery of
instruction.

However, amidst the worldwide crisis the world is facing, the Department of Education of
Agusan del Sur (DepEd Agusan del Sur) lives up to its mission to deliver quality education. Along
with this, the Project PAGPABASA (Pag-agak og Pabasa sa mga Batang Agusanon) of DepEd Agusan
del Sur was implemented tailored fit for blended modalities by designing activities and
supplementary materials for modular learning modality, RBI and in online platform.

In line with this, Corpuz National High School carried out a developmental, contextualized
and localized reading program named Project TRIUMPH (Thrive Reading Interest and
Understanding through Meaningful Practices at Home) which from the word itself means to grow
and to flourish. It is the school’s initiative to ignite the love for reading among learners. Aside from
that, Project TRIUMPH aims to develop learners’ reading comprehension through meaningful
practices such as hands-on games and activities even at their homes.

Consequently, by the continuous implementation of this project, the school foresees

independent readers and globally competitive graduates.

Project TRIUMPH will ensure that even with the challenge the pandemic has brought to the
country’s educational system, Corpuz National High School triumph.

PROGRAM DECRIPTION

Project TRIUMPH (Thrive Reading Interest and Understanding through Meaningful

Practices at Home) is Corpuz National High School’s initiative to address the problems regarding to
its learners’ low reading comprehension and fluency. The goal of this project is to improve the
reading level of Grade 7 students from Instructional and Frustration to Independent level even
when they are at the comfort of their homes in an interactive and entertaining way. It also target to
develop reading interest among learners through games and let them discover the pleasure of
reading as one of its salient feature is GAHom-EDUCAR (Game-based Activities at Home to Educate
and Develop Understanding, Comprehension and reading Fluency).

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Corpuz National High School (CNHS) is a public school located in a mountainous terrain of
Del Monte National High School. A 9-kilometer away from the barangay, this school has a
population of 155 students, came all the way from the sitio and its neighboring places- San Roque
and New Davao- which are an hour away from the school.

CNHS is at disadvantaged in many ways. They routinely suffer from lack of adequate
classroom furniture and supplies which includes reading materials. Hence, students are
unmotivated and counterproductive when it comes to reading. With the advancement of
technology, these students don’t have enough contact even with keypad cellular phones. Moreover,
with the current situation the world is facing which resulted to the prohibition of face to face
interaction between students and teachers, learners became even more deprived.

On the first quarter of the school year, a pre-screening/group screening test was conducted
to students through the dissemination of materials during the distribution of modules, it was found
out the level of reading of all students are both instructional and frustration. For English, out of 43
Grade 7 students, there are 38 students who belong to Frustration level, 22 of them are male and 16
are female. There are 5 students who belong to Instructional, 3 of them are male and 2 are female
and there were none independent readers. For Filipino, out of 43 Grade 7 students, there are 34
students who belong to Frustration level, 22 of them are male and 12 are female. There are 8
students who belong to Instructional, 3 of them are male and 5 are female and there is 1 female
student who is considered as independent reader. This only shows that there is a problem on the
Grade 7 students of CNHS poor reading ability and comprehension skill which needs to be solved.

Hence, a developmental reading program was made to address the issue. Project TRIUMPH
(Thrive Reading Interest and Understanding through Meaningful Practices at Home) focused on
answering its cause and design strategies for immediate intervention.
