Course Rationale

Skill in mathematical operations is essential for success in many business and economics courses, and
for some fields in business and economics, Applied Business Math is a required course. Besides to be a
responsible actor in a market economy, one must possess mathematical skills to make optimal
decisions.
Course Description

Applied Business Math (BUS 135) is a sequel to BUS 112; as such it takes off where BUS112 leaves off.
The course focuses on business applications of linear algebra, differential, and integral calculus.

Course Learning Objectives (CLO)

The instructional objective of the course is to teach

1. The conceptual framework behind mathematical operations that are applied in the field of
business and economics.
2. Techniques of solving problems.
3. Interpretation of results.
4. Application of learned techniques in business issues.

Student Learning Outcomes (SLO)

After completion of the course, the student will

1. Solve
a. Simultaneous linear equations systems.
b. Linear programming problems
c. Use differential calculus to find Maxima and Minima – unconstrained and constrained
--of single and multi-variable functions.
d. Use integral calculus to find areas under functions.
2. Interpret results obtained in (a) through (d)
3. Apply methods learned in (a) through (d) to solve business problems.

Equipments and Aids

Keep you calculator, and study material with you during the lecture session.

General Rules
 You are expected to come to lecture sessions prepared and on time. Late entries will be not
counted as ‘present’ for purposes of reward points for attendance and participation.
 No make-up for missed exams will be administered unless it meets the eligibility criterion set
forth in the NSU student handbook.
 Lowest quiz grade will be dropped.
 Any unfair means adopted in the assignments will be reported and dealt with according to NSU
rules of conduct.
