TOK prescribed title:
To what extent do you agree with the claim that “there’s
a world of difference between truth and facts” (Maya
Angelou)? Answer with reference to two areas of
knowledge.

What does this title ask you to discuss? How will
you go about approaching the question?
This title asks for a discussion and considers whether
there is a difference between “truth and facts” and
from there to give our opinion whether we agree or
not about Maya Angelou’s statement.
To approach this question, we must have a clear
understanding of the definition of “truth and facts” and
give examples to prove its definition through two
areas of Knowledge namely art and history

Which knowledge issues/aspects have you selected and why? Explain/show how they will contribute
to the development of the discussion.
I chose the History area and the Arts area for my essay because I found that in the fields of history and art there
is a difference between truth and facts according to the definitions I studied. For example, each historical event
that happens will have a date, place, and cause. Accordingly, the time and place would be the fact and the
cause of the event would be the truth. As for art, the fact is what is related to the process or artist and truth is
what it shows like human condition. I think in each area, explain the truth and facts and use examples.

Which areas of knowledge/ways of knowing will be included in your discussion? Explain how they will
contribute to the development of the discussion.
Art and History are 2 area will be included in my discussion. In the field of history, I will take the example of the
second world war, where fact is the time and place it happened, about truth is the reason why this happened.
This shows the two concepts of truth and fact. There is a difference. In terms of art, I use Leonardo da Vinci's
famous painting "The last supper", here there is also a difference between truth and facts, we know the fact that
the process of making the picture of the author and truth is based on what the viewers think about it.
