Introduction

The biggest Giant in the present retail industry is Walmart. It is a worldwide Corporation in retail
business and operating countless stores in many countries around the globe. Walmart was
established in the year 1962 in Arkansas, U.S by Sam Walton. Walmart has its own pattern while
operating its business. They use various name for different countries for instance in U.K it is
called Asda, in India it is called by the name Best Price. It is a family business which operates by
Walton family. It is the biggest corporate chain store on the planet also it is the biggest
organization as far as income. They are smaller in size than the supercenter and discount stores.
Generally, the Walmart store area is around 38000 square feet with only 95 employees. It offers
fresh produce, dairy products and other household supplies at affordable prices Around the
world. Walmart.

First time ever Walmart went global in 1991. Walmart has almost 6100 stores outside America.
They have stores in Chile, China, India, Mexico and the United Kingdom, Africa, Argentina,
Brazil, Canada etc. Apart from America, they operate their stores in 26 countries. There are very
few countries where this organization failed. Walmart has its own distinctive style and policies
for choosing the place for its business. They always enter that particular country’s market for
analyzing and researching purposes before establishing their business there. They check if the
local atmosphere and that particular market is suitable for Walmart or not. (Introduction to
Walmart - 1083 Words | Internet Public Library, n.d.)

4
Company Background

Walmart is an American chain of retail department, and grocery stores, known for being the
largest company in the world by revenue. It is also the world's largest private employer with
approximately. Walmart is a family owned business that was founded by Sam Walton in Rogers.
Throughout its 50+ years of history, Walmart has stayed true to its purpose and consistently
striven to offer low everyday prices to its customers, and because of this, Walmart has built for
itself a strong and loyal customer base. Customers walking into any Walmart store know that
they can count on low prices. Walmart's strongest segment, in terms of revenue, is Walmart U.S.,
which operates retail stores in all 50 states in the United States, and Puerto Rico.

Walmart has many competitors in USA, among them amazon, Alibaba, Costco, best buy is
mention-able. From a straightforward revenue position, Walmart remains larger. Walmart
reported revenue of $559 billion in 2020 where Amazon reported $386 billion.

But there are also some problems in Walmart such as: low wages, poor working conditions,
racial and gender discrimination, excessive hours, and sexual harassment. Many Walmart
workers are forced to work flexible schedules with shorter shifts, making it difficult to schedule
their lives. Walmart’s purpose is to help people worldwide and save money making live better
anytime and anywhere, in retail stores and throughout e-commerce. But high prices and
inventory, excessive product returns, and disruption to the supply chain all increase the cost of
goods sold. This, in turn, impacts Walmart's ability to fulfill its purpose.

5
History

Walmart is an American multinational retail corporation. It is an organization that operates

various types of hypermarkets discount department stores, and grocery stores from the United
States. (Wikipedia Contributors, 2019b) Walmart started operating in 1962. Sam Walton began
with just one store and one mission: help people save money so they could live better. With a
spark, On July 2, 1962, Sam Walton opened the first Walmart store in Rogers, AR. By 1969
Walmart by 1969, the company was officially incorporated and registering $12.7 billion in sales.
(Walmart History | Walmart Careers, 2016) Walmart started operating its chained store all over
the country so fast even Walmart became the nation's number-one retailer in 1990s. In recent
times Walmart considered as one of the largest retail corporations. Walmart is the biggest retail
market dominator in use.

Walmart operates its store in many countries in North America, Europe and Asia. Walmart has
its own pattern before entering into a new area or country. First, Walmart started exploring the
market of that country then they decided if it's suitable for them to enter or not. Walmart is a
huge organization but still they made some mistakes in some countries like Germany, Korea.
Because Walmart did not know how to operate their business into those countries according to
their cultures. After failing in these two countries Walmart wants to enter in japan.

6
Geography & Climate

Japan is the fourth largest island country in the world and Also the largest island country in East
Asia. The terrain is mostly rugged and mountainous with 66% forest. Japan is surrounded by
seas. (Wikipedia Contributors, 2019c). Japan is a chain of island.  It has 47 prefectures which are
in turn geographically divided into eight regions. The climate in Japan is mostly temperate with
four distinct seasons, except for the Hokkaido area and the Okinawa region. (Home - World
Travel Guide, 2017) Japan’s terrain is mountainous it doesn’t have sufficient flat land for
farming and other stuff. Because of this Geographical disadvantage japan has to rely on sea and
retail and grocery chained shores for daily life. But still japan is one of the biggest markets for
the world in terms of business. Japan retail sector attracts throughout Asia’s 55% of the Asian
market. For foreign companies japans market holds significant opportunities for advancing into
other Asian markets. (Arjun Cb, 2013)

The geography of japan impacted strongly on different types of business sector. If Walmart
wants to operate its stores in Japan they must need to check if the geographical condition is
considerable or not. Because there was a retail company Tesco which failed operate its store in
japan for this reason. (write pass, 2017) Japan also has different cultures and values in different
regions because of their geography and climate. So, it was very challenging for Tesco to
understand their different culture and operate according to them.

Currently, Japan is a world leader in the development of new climate-friendly technologies

which can be one of the major reasons for choosing japan for business.

7
People

In terms of demographic features, Japanese population  include  density, ethnicity, education

level, health of the populace, economic status, religious affiliations and other aspects regarding
the population. Japan is one of the most populated country in the world. In Japan, there are 337
people living per square kilometer and 889 people per square mile according to World
Development Indicators. (Wikipedia Contributors, 2019a)
People of japan use Japanese as their national language. But Ryukyuan languages are spoken in
Okinawa and parts of Kagoshima in the Ryukyu Islands. Minority of the Japanese people use
Nivkh, Orok language. Japanese is ranked by the U.S. Foreign Services Institute as the most
difficult language for native English speakers to learn. (published M.B, 2010). Japan is one of the
finest markets for business in the world. But it is really hard to do business in japan because of
the communication problem. Japanese people don’t feel it is necessary to learn English. They
have their own language and they feel comfortable and proud of their language. There are almost
121 million people who speak Japanese every day. They don’t like to speak English, which is the
biggest problem for foreign investors. Because communication is the major tool for a successful
business.

Japan has 8 regions and people of these regions do not exactly share the same culture, taste and
behavior. They have slight differences among them. So, in terms of business it has to be kept in
mind that it would be a failure if they use the same business pattern in every region of japan.

8
Currency

Currency is a trading form of money that is approved by the government and used by the public.
The currency of Japan is Yen. It was officially adopted by the Meiji government on the 10 th of
May, 1871. The idea of the yen was a part of modernization policy of Japan’s economy. Yen
currency was replaced from Mon currency. Until the early Meiji period in 1871, The Mon was
the currency of Japan in the period of Muromachi in 1336. Generally, all Mun and yen currency
was based on coins, but in 1885, The Bank of Japan issued the first central banknotes. The
banknotes were called Daikokusatu and they were convertible in silver. But after the western
power’s abandonment of silver as a currency of standard, Japan adopted the gold standard
through the Coinage Law. The Coinage law was created by the United States Congress in 1857
(Wikipedia). The yen is the third most traded currency after the Us dollar and euro. The yen's
gain is frequently attributed to the strengthening of the US dollar and the strengthening of the
Japanese economy. (Japanese Yen (JPY), n.d.)

Since World War two, the Yen currency has lost much of its pre-war value. In the year 1973,
Yen reached a high of 271 per US dollar. Following the deflation and appreciation of the oil
crisis in 1973, A yen reached a value of 227 yen per one US dollar by the year 1980. The bank of
Japan declared to extend its asset acquisition policy by $1.4 trillion over two years in 2013. In
2017, Japan gained a big success on its rising economy for the worldwide demand of its exports
due to the government spending and the liquidity of its central bank. Hence, CNBC (Consumer
News and Business Channel) stated JPY (Yen) to be among the top-performing currencies in the
year 2018. Currently, the yen reached a high of 115 yen per US dollar in the year 2021

9
Economy

The system for allocating resources to meet people's needs and wants is known as an economy.
There are three main types of economies which are free market, command, and mixed economy.
Japans economy is highly developed free-market economy. It is the third-largest in the world. In
2020, the gross domestic product of Japan amounted to around 4975.42 billion US dollars. By
the end of 2021, Japan expects its GDP to reach 5200.00 USD Billion. In the long-term, Japan’s
GDP is projected to trend around 5500.00 USD Billion in 2022 and 5900.00 USD Billion in
2023, according to the world bank. (Japan GDP | 1960-2019 Data | 2020-2022 Forecast |
Historical | Chart | News, n.d.)

The Deposit Interest Rate is the average rate paid which is paid by commercial banks to
individuals on deposits. The Deposit Interest Rate in Japan increased to -0.12 percent on Friday,
December 24 from -0.15 percent on the previous day.

(BoJ Holds Policy Steady, Lowers Inflation Forecasts, 2019)

Walmart will open card system payment and any other app payment systems which will increase
people’s transaction. Walmart can also recruit many people to serve in the company or retail
stores which will increase Japan’s employment and per head income. It will make a good impact
on Japan’s economy as well.

10
Culture & Customs

Culture came from the word “cultura”. It is a Latin word that means “to cultivate”. Culture is the
acquired knowledge that people use to interpret experience and generate behavior. Japan has a
multifaceted culture. Japan steeped in the deepest of traditions dating back thousands of years;
on the other hand, it is a society in a continual state of rapid flux, with continually shifting fads
and fashions and technological development that constantly pushes back the boundaries of the
possible. Culture can be related to religion, history, myth, tradition, Rituals, festivals, language,
or entertaining purposes. As language is also an example of traditional culture, Walmart changed
its name to Seiyu from Walmart to cope with the local culture. To talk about religion, Shinto and
Buddhism are the primary religions of Japan. (Inside Japan, 2019) According to the annual
statistical research on religion in 2018 by the Government of Japan's Agency for Culture Affairs,
66.7 percent of the population practices Buddhism, 69.0 percent practices Shintoism, 7.7 percent
other religions. In religious festivals, many shops and companies declare festival discounts for
their clients and customers (Robot or human? n.d.). Japanese people buy many attractable goods
for the entertaining purpose to celebrate festivals. Walmart can also gain profits by giving
discounts at the time of festivals. Such as eating with chopsticks is one of the Japan’s most
popular cultures. As a retail store, Walmart can give discounts on chopsticks in order to attract
their customers and gain more profit If they start operating business in Japan. (Robot or human?
n.d.-b)

11
Staffing policies in my chosen country:

Wal-Mart the markets focused heavily on three of Wal-Most Mart’s profitable categories:
grocery, pharmacy, and gasoline. They also a carry a large variety of fresh food. Wal-Mart take a
look at the produce area once more. There are also various wine-themed aisles. Supercenters are
typically 185,000 square feet in size and employee 350 or more people. In the United States,
Wal-Mart has 2,256 supercenters and 416 in other countries. Employee can use schedule to
examine schedules, trade shifts with other associates and even pick up vacant shifts. As a result,
associates have more control over their time than even before, allowing them to immediately
modify when plans change.

Walmart’s staffing policy permits associates to date people who work in the same department as
them, such as cashier, stockers, and managers. As a result, Walmart Shop associates are not
permitted to date managers or other superiors sue to the risk of bias.

In general, the day shifts begin before noon and the night time shift begins after noose. Another
way to look at it is that one day shift, you are more likely to leave before or after 6 pm. You can
expect to go home after the evening shift. Because not all shifts are created equal, it can actually
vary.

If Wal-Mart entered in japan then the corporation has taken tremendous attempts to reform. Wal-
Mart has become a driver for innovation and transformation in the Japanese retail sector since it
introduces into the country.

12
Advertising

Yes, digital advertising can provide a significant amount of reach. However, nothing beats the
power of in-store advertising especially, when you work with a knowledgeable partner every step
of the way. Invite a related business or a well-known brand to do a pop-up at your store. This
will entice their customers to join up for your marketing emails, which you can then invite them
to do. To lure customers into your store, use email marketing. Send coupons or special deals that
can only be used in-store. The most effective methods for acquiring new consumers are-

1. Marketing with content and chose platforms where your target audience is most active.
2. Advertising that is highly targeted and make use of your imagination when it comes to
your material.
3. Make a website that generates leads. and customer assistance should be handled through.
4. Benefits should take precedence over feature.
5. Maintain a social media pressure and create social media ads.
6. Make your brand noticed on message boards.
7. Deals and promotions should be offered. And ensured that your brand is consistent across
the board.

Now how I do advertising in Japan. So, every business should know in order to sell their product
or service successfully in Japan to recognize the Japanese market. Engage the services of a
seasoned Japanese digital marketer. Everything should be translated into native Japanese. Make
Japanese personalities for your marketing efforts. Make a marketing plan and calendar for Japan.
Collaborate with a number of different advertising agencies.

13
Communication Culture Information

Japanese has very different kinds of culture. They believe in facial expression, tone of voice and
posture to express their feelings. They trust more on non-verbal messages than the spoken word.
Japanese people love to speak their own language more than English. They love when other
cultures speak Japanese which is an advantage for establishing business in japan because it
attracts more people towards them. Communication culture is a combination of many segments
which is discussed below:

Verbal and Non-Verbal Communication:

Nonverbal communication employs a variety of methods, including the use of your complete
body, facial expression and voice tone. A cell phone calls, face to face chat, over loudspeakers,
through audio recordings and so on are all examples of verbal communication.

Good sales people look for ways to connect with their customers and establish a trusting and
understanding conversation. Asking non-confronting questions to shoe you actually care about
your customers wants is one of the most important conversation skills. Talking about your
product or service in a knowledgeable manner.

14
Nonverbal communication skills, such as active listening and reading nonverbal clues. Are just
as crucial as what you say when selling to customers. These skills can help you understand your
consumer’s needs so that you can provide them with the best products and services possible.

Nonverbal communication in the workplace examples is maintaining appropriate eye contact.

Using a cheerful tone of voice. Being conscious about one’s own appearance. Good posture can
be achieved by standing or sitting. Using suitable touch of express warmth or professionalism.

Speeches, presentations and announcement, as well as casual discussion amongst friends, are all
examples of verbal communication.

When it comes to business, Japan communicated in a very different way than many western
countries. And those who fail to account for this difference frequently find themselves lost in the
conversation or even unwittingly insulting those with whom they are conversing. To assist you in
navigation the challenges of working in Japan, here are a few key rules of etiquette to remember
before your next big meeting. As example: eye contact, pointing, physical contact.

15
Tone of Communication

There are 9 types of tone. The Japanese are celebrated for simply being indirect speakers. the
Japanese are celebrated for being oblique communicators. they will be imprecise whereas
respondent inquiries so as to take care of unity, avoid embarrassment, or be nice. Nonverbal cues
are ofttimes employed by individuals to deduce that means from a speech. Disagreements that
require to be self-addressed are usually handled in-camera and at a later date. it's usually thought
of as disrespectful to interrupt somebody United Nations agency is speaking. As a result, several
Japanese individuals opt to keep silent throughout a conversation till they need a chance to reply.
Silence is usually used purposefully to offer people time to have faith in what they are speech.
Quiet is usually used on purpose to offer people the chance to mirror what they are speech. As a
result, Walmart will communicate in an exceedingly formal tone. This style is often ascertained
in educational settings. It necessitates the utilization of structured language additionally as
improved reading skills and presents a lot of facts that will be tested than the opinions of the
author.

16
Business Manners & Etiquette

Business prescript in Japan is extremely influenced by social system and culture, cultivating an
awfully specific method of behaving throughout social interactions and business deals.
Understanding the business culture’s do and don’ts additionally to Japanese visual
communication, negotiations, and ethics will assist you plenty. Currently, Japan has the very best
outgoing investment quantitative relation within the world, and also the government is providing
numerous subsidies to encourage foreign startups to come back to Japan and do business here.
this implies that additional folks are learning the additional complex ways in which of social
interactions in Japanese businesses.

Walmart needs to follow some manners and equity in Japan. Like once it involves dressing,
particularly at work, the Japanese are terribly conservative. Men and girls just about wear an
equivalent form of suits to figure, all at intervals an equivalent dark spectrum of blue, grey, and
black. Japanese folks seldom raise queries or say they need not understand one thing, like once a
presentation or a gathering. notwithstanding they need completely no clue on what has been
aforementioned, they're going to reply “I perceive,” if you raise them. it'll solely transpire later
that they failed to. Mistakes are has taken plenty additional seriously than in another component
of the planet wherever you only “move on”. {this is this is often this will be} why the Japanese
can generally be slow to convey opinions or commitments verbally, for worry of creating a slip.
the Japanese are clean folks. From a young age, through faculty, and into the geographical point
there's a culture of cleanliness and hygiene.

17
Time awareness difference

It has been suggested and supported by anecdotes that the high-context Japanese culture is a
culture that uses time multi-fold. However, it is believed that Japanese use time in black and
white, in domestic and foreign settings involving people from other cultures, particularly
"Western" countries. Multiitem use typically occurs when a person is performing two or more
tasks at the same time, with different levels of attention to each. Monochrome time usage occurs
when performing one action at a time for a specified amount of time. Japanese use monochronic
time use while dealing with foreigners (black and white) and their technology but in all other
situations they act multiitem. Also, Japanese in general are very flexible and willing to
compromise to meet the needs of a diverse group of people. In Japan, a strictly planned
monochrome pattern is applied to foreigners who are not well integrated into the Japanese
system to make their work more leisurely. When dealing with the outside world, they have
adopted the dominant time system that characterizes this world., that is, entering the world of
monochronic." So, Walmart needs black and white time use to do good business in Japan as if it
came from an American company and not from Japan. If you can do that, you can do business
there and focus on punctuality. Japanese people are very strict with time management.

18
Concept of personal Space

Personal space is a concept from sociology. The concept talks about two actors such as among
two people or more. The basic idea beyond it is these actors have space around them. The closer
they are to each other emotionally, the closer an actor will be able to stand to the other, without
being unwanted. (Wikipedia)

Culture plays an important role in shaping the style of communication. In a general sense, people
react to how we speak rather than what we say. The culture in which individuals are socialized
influences the way they communicate, and the way individuals communicate can change the
culture.

Japanese are far more different and unique in workplace than other countries. The Japanese are
ethnically shy and private and they are much more reserved than USA. Privacy is important in
Japan; many Japanese are very shy about meeting with foreigners. The Japanese rely on facial
expression, tone of voice and posture to tell them what someone feels. Moreover, they trust non-
verbal messages more than the spoken word as words can have several meanings. The context in
which something is said affects the meaning of the words. The Japanese are generally non-
confrontational and rarely directly give negative responses such as insults, criticisms, or cause
embarrassment to anyone. To present something disagreeable, Japanese usually use indirect
communication. Walmart of USA has to absorb the concept of personal space of Japan to gain
success in business. (Yasuka, 2021)

19
Decision making, problem solving and negotiation styles

Decision making is the process of making choices by identifying a decision, gathering

information, and assessing alternative resolutions. Walmart should identify a decision then
gather information about Japanese market and at last they will assess alternative resolutions to
choose best ones. At first, Walmart of USA should identify critical factors of Japan’s market
which will affect the outcome of a decision. Secondly, they should evaluate options accurately
and establish priorities as Japan has lots of options. Third step will be Walmart will anticipate
outcomes very carefully and see logical consequences. And then they will navigate risk and
uncertainty.

Their main problem would be different culture of Japan so they should research on Japanese
culture. They would face language problem whereas most Japanese don’t know English so, they
should hire interpreter to communicate with them. Due to different ethnic reasons Japanese
market demand is totally different and they use to have offered so, Walmart would fulfill their
needed market demand their preference offers. If there would happen any complex situation
Walmart will communicate with cleverly and respectfully with positive verbal or non-verbal
communication.

As Japan is totally a different country, negotiation style of Walmart (USA) must be cooperative.
Most research suggests that negotiators with a primarily cooperative style are more successful
than hard bargainers and that improve everyone's outcomes. Hard bargain always create conflicts
and conflicts pushes into failure. U.S. negotiators have a distinctive style: forceful, explicit,
legalistic, urgent, and results-oriented. On the other hand, The Japanese negotiating style tends to
be impersonal and unemotional, but at the same time they want to know, like and trust the people
they are doing business try to approach the negotiation with a mix of facts and statistics as well
as personality and warmth. So, Walmart should avoid forceful, explicit, urgent and result
oriented method while negotiating with Japanese. Meanwhile they can negotiate by Japanese
way like cooperatively, friendly, by giving them motivation. There need not be forceful because
Japanese are always punctual and aware with their work. when the negotiation ends, thank the
other side for their cooperation and express your desire to work together again. These steps may

20
motivate the counterpart to speak well of Walmart to potential partners. (Negotiation Skills:
Which Negotiating Style Is Best? 2020)

Political Affiliation with the USA

Japan has one of the most successful democracies and largest economies in the world. The
United States-Japan Affiliation is the cornerstone of the United States' security interests in Asia,
and it is critical to regional stability and prosperity. Outside of Asia, Japanese political and
financial partnership has significantly aided US efforts on a wide range of global issues,
including countering ISIL and terrorism, halting the spread of Ebola and other emerging
pandemic infections, advancing environmental goals, maintaining solidarity in the face of
Russian aggression in the region and beyond, assisting developing countries, combating piracy,
and advocating for human rights and democracy. Through partnerships such as the Japan-U.S.
Strategic Energy Partnership (JUSEP), the Japan-U.S. Strategic Digital Economy Partnership
(JUSDEP), and the Japan-U.S. Mekong Power Partnership, Japan and the United States are also
making progress toward our shared vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific region (JUMPP). (U.S.
Relations with Japan - United States Department of State, 2020)
A political strategy in the United States—indeed, in every major market across the world—is a vital
component of business strategy for the Japanese. In fact, an in-depth analysis of Japan's methodical
political approach in the United States demonstrates the primacy of politics in the global economy.
According to an A.T. Kearney poll, very few than 30% of America's top 150 CEOs ever attempt to
influence their own government's policy. Japanese business executives, on the other hand, have
enthusiastically embraced the view that politics is a crucial source of competitive advantage in global
competitiveness. In the marketplace, Americans have become used to high-quality, low-cost, creative
Japanese items.
It is a corporate expenditure incurred with extraordinary consistency, coherence, and coordination by
the Japanese. Once it comes to global politics, Japanese corporate and government interests work
together, adopting a unique form of "economic diplomacy" that uses governmental institutions for
economic reasons. Furthermore, the Japanese are willing to spend whatever it takes in politics to
achieve their economic objectives. (Choate, 1990)

21
Anything else you think would be useful to know about
communication
Japan is a different country with different culture, language and habit. So, Walton should use
some important agenda that will be useful to know about communication. Like as, Japanese
don’t know English so Walton can use an app that could convert English to Japanese language
and Japanese language to English language. Americans can develop that app so that they will
face no problem while communicating. They can talk and text messages by converting language
through that app. Also, sometimes Walton will need to talk face to face and at that time using
app will be little bit embarrassing. So, to handle that situation they should hire interpreter who
knows Japanese and English language thoroughly. Since Japanese are shy and communication
styles reflect on maintaining harmony. The Japanese are generally non-confrontational and rarely
directly give negative responses such as insults, criticisms, or cause embarrassment to anyone.
To present something disagreeable, Japanese usually will do so using indirect communication.
But on the other hand, American’s are forceful, explicit, legalistic, urgent, and results-oriented
but Walton should avoid these strategies they should follow Japanese strategy, rules and
regulations. Americans should practice indirect communication to handle the unusual situations.

22
Recommendation

Walmart is one of the leading companies in retail industry. As they have many branches in
different countries and successfully organizing business, they also want to start business in
Japanese market. Japan is a density country and a huge market so if Walmart start business in
Japan then gain more profit as Walmart in already a profitable company. We know that Walmart
has many branches in different country but they don’t follow the same strategy that they follow
in their own country. Walmart changed their strategy for different countries for example they had
change the name of Walmart in UK an Asda, in India as best price etc. So, Walmart should
follow the different strategy to establish in Japan as Japanese have huge differences than others.
Mainly Walmart should focus on Japanese language and culture. Japanese people are more likely
prefer offers, discounts and quality products. Here Walmart should plan the product with alluring
offers, discount price with maintaining the quality of products.

23
Conclusion

Walmart is a leading company in retail industry which established in 1962. Now Walmart have
many branches in different countries operating business successfully. But behind their success
they have changed the strategy which they follow in their own country. By changing the strategy
and rules they gain success and they are planning to establish branches of Walmart in Japan. But
Japan is totally different by culture, language, habit and mentality. So, Walmart should survey,
research and study about Japanese culture, language, their needs and wants, behavior. Like
Mainly Walmart should focus on Japanese language and culture. Japanese people are more likely
prefer offers, discounts and quality products. Here Walmart should plan the product with alluring
