NETWORK DESIGN

BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR LEARNERS

Network design refers to the preparation of the implementation of a computer network

structure.
It is generally performed by network engineers, designers, IT administrators and other related
technical staff. Before the implementation of a network infrastructure network design should be done
first.

Network design includes evaluating, understanding and scoping the network to be

implemented. The whole network design is usually represented as a network plan that serves as the
blueprint for implementing the network physically.

THE IMPORTANCE OF NETWORK DESIGN SERVICES

 High Performance
 Flexible Platform
 Scalability of the Network
 Cost-effective Design

TYPES OF COMPUTER NETWORK DESIGN

A. Local Area Network (LAN)

This is the most known network design and is usually the simplest for businesses.  The group
of computers and devices are linked together by a switch/ switches, using a private addressing
system as defined by the TCP/IP protocol. You can share resources like printers, applications, and
games on this type of network. LAN typically depend mostly on wired connections for increased
speed and security. LAN uses twisted pair cables and coaxial cables as communication medium. It
covers a small distance, and so the error and noise are minimized.
B. Wide Area Network (WAN)

LAN
This is the ideal choice for wide geographical area. It could be a connection of LAN to other
LAN through telephone lines and radio waves and may be restricted to an organization or accessible
to the public. Compared to other network designs, it uses high speed technology and is more
expensive. There are two types
of WAN:

1. Switched WAN –
asynchronous transfer
mode (ATM) network s
an example of this.
2. Point-to-Point WAN -
dial-up line that connects
a home computer to the
Internet.

C. Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN)

Stands for "Wireless Local Area Network." A WLAN, or wireless LAN, is a network that
allows wireless connection and communication between devices. This design lets you improve
your wireless connection over a short distance. Compare to traditional network cables, it uses
radio signals for the connection of your computers. It also connects small devices, such as
smartphones and tablets, to the network. Its range can be easily extended by adding repeater/s.
D. Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)

MAN or Metropolitan Area Network covers a larger range than that of a LAN and smaller
range as compared to WAN. This allows
your organization to share resources over
a vast region as it covers a wider area
compared to WLAN and wide area
networks. It is often used by large
universities. Companies occupying a big
geographical area can also use this
network. Its speed ranges in terms of
Mbps. Designing and maintaining a
Metropolitan Area Network is not that
easy.

E. Storage Area Networks (SANs)

A storage area network (SAN) or storage network is a computer network which delivers access to
combined, block-level data storage. SANs are mostly used to access storage devices from servers so
that the devices appear to the operating system as direct-attached storage. SAN, as a dedicated
network of storage devices is not accessible through the local area network (LAN).
