a) Recommend three renewable energy sources for your organization with justifications
Three renewable energy sources
1. Tidal Power
Tidal energy can be generated in two ways, tidal stream generators or by barrage generation
(Adam, 2017). The power created though tidal generators is generally more environmentally
friendly and causes less impact on established ecosystems. Similar to a wind turbine, many
tidal stream generators rotate underwater and are driven by the swiftly moving dense water.

2. Geothermal Power
Geothermal energy is a very powerful and efficient way to extract a renewable energy from
the earth through natural processes (Tara, 2018). This can be performed on a small scale to
provide heat for a residential unit (a geothermal heat pump) or on a large scale for energy
production through a geothermal power plant.

3. Solar Power
Most renewable energy comes either directly or indirectly from the sun. Solar energy can be
used directly for heating and lighting homes and other buildings, for generating electricity,
and for hot water heating, solar cooling, and a variety of commercial and industrial uses
(Anderson, 2017).

b) Describe three methods these two IT corporations have taken to promote Green
Computing: Microsoft and IBM. Recommend one from these two IT corporations to your
organization justifying your reasons.

1. Microsoft
Microsoft has been aggressively moving into green computing initiatives over the past few years, both
to externally promote their green computing technology solutions and to reduce costs on their own
massive data centres (Microsoft, 2014).
a) Virtualization
One solution used to meet their Microsoft’s needs while saving on increasing power and energy
costs is Virtualization (Microsoft, 2018).

b) Microsoft Unified Communications

Communications and collaboration is streamlined by reducing the need for commuting and
business travel. This solution enhances environmental sustainability and lowers cost. Unified
Communications helped Microsoft save 17,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions and
reduced overall travel costs by more than 90 million dollars.

c) Energy Smart Buildings

Through the use of a pilot program, Microsoft is known sharing its knowledge on how businesses
and organizations are able to successfully use IT to improve the overall bottom line and also
reduce environmental impacts

2. IBM
IBM has launched a project called 'Project Big Green'. As part of the plan, IBM has created the
following strategic plans:

This solution provides a three-dimensional map of temperatures in data centres with the goal of
showing what areas need cooling to reduce energy consumption.
