34 00 010 Change brake fluid in entire system (5 FRUs)

+ 34 00 504

Preparatory work
Removing right hand protector

Core activity
(-) Changing brake fluid, front, and bleeding brake system

ATTENTION
Brake fluid on painted surfaces, plastic and rubber components.
Material damage
Do not allow brake fluid to come into contact with painted surfaces,
plastic or rubber components.

Remove and clean parts:

Screws (1)
Cover (2)
Diaphragm (3)
Draw off the old fluid and clean reservoir (4).

Push back brake caliper (1) by hand.

The brake pistons are pushed back.
Draw off the excess brake fluid from the reservoir.

Turn the handlebars to a position in which the brake fluid reservoir is

horizontal.
WARNING
Brake fluid is hygroscopic.
Reduction of boiling point if stored in open container.
Use only fresh brake fluid from an unopened container.

Top up with fresh brake fluid to the (MAX) mark.

brake fluid emerges.

Close bleed screw (1).

Tightening torques
Bleed screw in brake-fluid reservoir
6 Nm

Remove rubber cap (1) and connect the brake bleeding device to
bleed screw (2).
Slightly open bleed screw (2).
WARNING
Air bubbles difficult to recognise in brake fluid drawn off by
vacuum extraction.
Air in the brake system.
In the final step, bleed the system manually (without vacuum
extraction) until the fluid emerging is bubble-free.

Continue bleeding the brake system until fresh brake fluid emerges.
Close bleed screw (2).

Tightening torques
Bleed screw in front brake caliper
M10 x 1 - 4.9 14 Nm

Secure rubber cap (1).

Slightly open bleed screw (1).

Continue using the brake lever to bleed the brake system until air
ceases to rise.
Close bleed screw (1).

Tightening torques
Bleed screw in brake-fluid reservoir
6 Nm

Operate the brake lever to seat the brake pistons.

Turn the handlebars to a position in which the brake fluid reservoir is
horizontal.
WARNING
Brake fluid is hygroscopic.

Prior to assembly, remove all traces of brake fluid from all

components.
Install diaphragm (3), lid (2) and screws (1).

Check

Check brake pressure by operating the brakes.

Result:

Low brake pressure

Measure:

Repeat the bleeding process without vacuum extraction.

Draw off the brake fluid drawn in by the process and clean reservoir
(1).
WARNING

Remove cap (1) and connect the brake bleeding device to bleed screw
(2).
Open bleed screw (2) by half a turn.
WARNING
Low fluid level during fluid change and bleeding procedure.
Ingress of air through fluid replenishing bore. Bleeding procedure has to
be repeated.
Fluid replenishing bore must always be underneath the surface of the
brake fluid.

Continue bleeding the brakes until new brake fluid emerges; top up
with fresh brake fluid as necessary.
Close bleed screw (2) and remove the brake bleeding device.
