Project Management

Exercise 1:
A project consists of a series of tasks labeled A, B, ...................., H, I with the following
relationships (W< X means X can't start until W is completed)
(A < D, E), (B, D < F), (C < G), (B < H), (F, G < I)
a) Draw the network diagram (AOA) of the project.
b) Develop the Gantt chart for project scheduling.
c) Determine the critical path of the project if the time in days of completion of each task is
as follows:
Task A B C D E F G H I
Time 23 8 29 16 24 18 19 4 10
Exercise 2:
A company is in the process of preparing a budget for launching a new product. The following
table provides the associated activities and their durations.

Activity Description Predecessor Duration

A Forecast sales volume - 10
B Study competitive market - 7
C Design item and facilities A 5
D Prepare production schedule C 3
E Estimate cost of production D 2
F Set sales price B, E 1
G Prepare budget E, F 14

a) Construct the project network (AON) of the given activities.

b) Find the earliest times, latest times, and slack time for each activity. Which of the paths is
a critical path?
Exercise 3:
You are given the following information about a project consisting of six activities:

a) Construct the project network for this project.

b) Find the earliest times and latest times for each activity. Which of the paths is a critical
path?

Exercise 4:
For each of the 10 activities, there are the three estimates for project
▪ A precedes C, E.
▪ B precedes D, H
▪ C precedes F.
▪ E and F precede I.
▪ D precedes G.
▪ G and H precede J.

a) Construct the project network for this project.

b) Find the estimate of the mean and variance of the duration.
c) Determine the critical path and the slack variable.
d) Calculate the approximate probability of completing the project within 22 months

b) Find the estimated mean and variance of the duration.
c) Show ES, EF, LS, LF, and slack time of each activity in the diagram.
d) Find the critical path.
e) Find the approximate probability of completing the project within 11 weeks.
f) Find the approximate probability of completing the project within 4 weeks.
g) Find the approximate probability of completing the project within 7 weeks.
Exercise 8:
A company is launching a new product and has made estimates of the time for the various
activities associated with the launch as follows:

Times(days)
Activity Predecessor Duration
Optimistic Most likely pessimistic
A None 3 1 3 5
B None 4 3 4 5
C A, B 3 1 3 11
D B 3 3 3 9
E A 2 1 2 3
F C 5 2 5 14
G E, F 3 2 3 4
H D, F 2 2 2 2
I G, H 10 10 10 10

a) Find out the critical path if the duration is deterministic (CPM).

b) Find out the expected length of critical path and its standard deviation (PERT).
c) Find the probability that the launching will be completed in 27 days.
d) Find the duration which has 95% probability of completion.

Exercise 9:
Hamilton Country Parks is planning to develop a new park and recreational area on a recently
purchased 100-acre tract of land. Project development activities include cleaning playground and
picnic areas, constructing road, constructing a shelter house, purchasing picnic equipment, and so
on. The PERT/CPM network shown below is being used in the planning, scheduling, and
controlling of this project.

a) What is the critical path for this network?

b) Show the activity schedule for this project.
c) The park commissioner would like to open the park to the public within 6 months from the
time the work on the project is started. Does this opening date appear feasible? Explain
your answer.
