DIGITAL WALLET SUPPORT DURING THE PANDEMIC

In just 16 days since President Joko Widodo first announced two positive citizens
for Covid-19 on 2 Mart 2020, the number of positive cases of Covid-19 increased to 227
cases. To suppress the growth of positive cases of Covid-19, on April 4 2020, DKI
Provincial Government Jakarta has sent a letter to the Minister of Health, Terawan Agus
Putranto, so that the regions DKI Jakarta will be assigned as a large-scale social
restriction area. To cope with the increasingly massive spread of Covid-19, the
government is trying to intensify the socialization of restrictions on community activities
to suppress the transmission.
President Joko Widodo chose large-scale social restrictions (PSBB) over
quarantine. The quarantine option was not taken because based on some experience in
countries it creates a new problem. The PSBB policy gave rise to government regulations
governing physical distancing restrictions more assertive, disciplined, and effective.
According to Government Regulation No. 21 of 2020, for regional restrictions due to
disease outbreaks, the region must obtain a determination from the Ministry of Health.
Based on social scale restrictions targeting the provincial level and district/city.
Therefore, online transactions and digital wallets are starting to be widely known.
Electronic transactions using digital wallet applications have increased in the last
three years. Besides being considered practical, safe, fast, and offers many advantages, e-
wallet transactions are also considered safer and follow health protocols during the
Covid-19 pandemic.
The payment method that is currently developing in the community is digital-
based payment (cashless). Cashless payment methods are currently divided into two, e-
money and e-wallet. E-money is a chip-focused payment method (offline) and an e-wallet
or also known as a digital wallet is a server-based payment method (online). In the last
three months, the use of e-wallet has grown rapidly. It is not only used for payments at
offline outlets, but also online payments. To find out these consumer behavior trends,
Snapcart has conducted an online survey during September-December 2020, covering all
of Indonesia, with 1,000 respondents selected. According to a Snapcart survey,
ShopeePay is listed as the most used e-wallet brand (50%), with a large difference
compared to 4 other players, such as Ovo (23%), Gopay (12%), Dana (12%), and
LinkAja (3%).
The impact of the current pandemic requires everyone as much as possible not to make
transactions directly even though they cannot adapt to this habit immediately, but it must
be done because there are also services that can help people not to do it directly, using
Digital Wallets or e-wallet for payments. Shopping on e-commerce is very popular with
people during the pandemic. Digital wallets are expected to be a strong influence in
increasing people's purchasing power so that the economy recovers. The increase in
transactions using e-wallet occurs in line with the shift in the trend of people's shopping
from offline to online. The presence of this digital wallet offers various conveniences and
security in transactions. Various advantages can be obtained when using a digital wallet
in this pandemic era, such as; practical, effective, safe, there are promos or discounts
given by the application.
