If hazardous materia are used in the workplace, Canadian legislation requires that a WHMIS program4
/DC) k
must be in place.

To assist you with presenting WHMIS training to your co-workers, this part of the Manual will give you helpful tips and
recommendations for conducting successful Generic WHMIS Education and Work-Site Specific Training.

GENERIC WHIMS EDUCATION

Trainers can purchase AMHSA's WHMIS 2015 workbook and exam for participants to use.
Make sure that you've familiarized yourself with the material and are comfortable with it before conducting training.

 Students must pass the exam with 80% or above.

However, if they don't achieve this on their first attempt, review the exam with them, discuss areas of difficulty, and give
them a chance to rewrite. When they've completed the training, AMHSA will issue certificates to the participants on the
trainer's behalf.

 The workbooks are considered self-study books.

Each participant receives their own copy of the workbook, which also serves as a reference/refresher material, post-
training. It can be given out prior to a classroom training session for review, or if you prefer, you can go through the
workbooks with the participants as a class. Both methods have their strengths, so choose the approach that you're most
comfortable with, and the one that ensures your participants are best supported.

 ormation in the workbooks and make sure everyone is comfortable with the material. Review site-specific
information, for examp e rem regular basis.

 Remember to keep the training in context. Participants may only require a basic understanding of WHMIS, and not the in-
depth technical information the trainer's manual provides. Training is always more successful when it's personalized to the
participants' needs.

 Upon completion of the self-study workbook, participants will have - a basic knowledge of WHMIS
- an understanding of the WHMIS labeling system including hazard symbols
- an understanding of the information contained on Safety Data Sheets (SDS)

 Trainers can also customize the course by including additional complementary resources, such as audiovisuals materials. By
using a variety of different modalities (audio, visual, and kinesthetic) to teach the class, trainers enable participants to create stronger and
more robust connections to the information, helping to move it into their long-term memory.

 When encountering participants with low English literacy skills or learning disabilities, it's important to be sensitive to their
needs. While they may have a strong verbal understanding of the concepts, they may have difficulty with written questions. If this is an
issue, you can deliver the exam orally. Keep in mind, also, that a lot of the written information on labels and SDS will present
challenges for those with low English literacy. Because of that, site-specific training and a good understanding of the hazard symbols
is critical.
