MASTER’S THESIS
Mathematical Modeling of Alcohol Metabolism in Liver
Guide: Prof. K.V. Venkatesh, Chemical Dept., IIT Bombay Jan’20–Jul’21
Motivation:
– Alcohol consumption has a powerful impact on human’s physical and mental health.
– Worldwide 3 million deaths and India wide 2.6 Lakhs deaths are happening every year due to alcohol consumption
either in the form of liver cirrhosis, cancer or road accidents.
Work done:
– Developed a model using MATLAB which gives blood alcohol concentrations versus time data by taking
information about Age, weight, height, gender, calories intake, volume and concentration of alcohol intake.
– Determined the times at which an individual gets the Physiological effects like relaxation, loss of motor function,
impairment of driving skills, visual impairment, vomiting after consumption of alcohol using model.
– Performed Parametric sensitivity analysis to evaluate effect of alcohol on physiology of individuals.
– Performed Population balance of 3000 individuals to determine the statistics of certain BAC ranges.
– Performed Pearson correlation test and developed Gaussian regression model in MATLAB to predict the max alcohol
concentrations, scores of physiological effects, time durations of toxic alcohol concentrations exits in the body.

TECHNICAL PROJECT S
Designing of a distillation column Aug’20-Dec’20
Guide Prof: Sanjay Mahajani, Chemical Dept., IIT Bombay
– Surveyed the literature to find the relative volatilities of given feed mixture of n-propane, n-butane,n-hexane.
– Calculated the Minimum reflux ratio (Rm), Minimum number of stages (Nm) and Actual number of stages (N) to a
distillation column for given mixture by FUG Method.
– Designed the distillation column by using the software DWSIM and compared the results with FUG method.

Designing of heat exchangers network Aug’20-Dec’20

Guide Prof: R. K. Malik, Chemical department, IIT Bombay
– Performed the Heat cascade analysis to determine the minimum hot utility, minimum cold utility and pinch
temperatures for the given process streams by manual calculation and by using GAMS.
– Designed an MER network of heat exchangers using Pinch design method and determined minimum number of
heat exchangers required.

One dimensional unsteady heat transfer bya slab Jun’19-Nov’19
Guide Prof: Mani Bhushan, Chemical Dept., IIT Bombay.
– Performed the discretization of the model by orthogonal collocations and Finite difference method.
– Solved the PDEs using Explicit Euler, Runge-Kutta 4th order and Runge-Kutta 3rd order Methods in MATLAB
using predefined functions and compared the results

Manufacturing of liquid oxygen Jan’17-Apr’17

Guide: Prof: P. Venkatarao, Chemical Dept., Andhra University
– Designed a plant to produce 75M3 /hr of 95% liquid oxygen from atmospheric air on 333 Working Days(7992
hours)/year by taken into account the Cryogenic distillation process.
– Performed the cost Analysis and found that production of 5, 99,400𝑴M3 /annum of liquid oxygen would Earn a profit
ofabout Rs. 38.07 crores/annum.
