PREVENTION OF SUBSTANCES USE AND ABUSE

I. GATEWAY DRUGS

are legal drugs such as cigarettes and alcohol, which can lead to more
addictive and dangerous drugs.
Cigarettes and alcoholic beverages are readily available and can be
purchased everywhere. Many individuals, especially teenagers, are
more curious and tempted to use these products. These are considered
gateway drugs because they open the door to the use of more
dangerous and harmful drugs.

NEGATIVE HEALTH IMPACT OF SMOKING

TOBACCO
• A tall, leafy plant, originally grown in South and Central
America but now cultivated around the world.
• Nicotiana tabacum or sometimes called common tobacco is
preferred for producing present-day cigarettes.
• As early as 600-900 CE using tobacco has been recorded as
carved drawings on stones were discovered in Mexico.
• American Indians smoked tobacco for special religious
occasions and medical purposes only.

According to World Health Organization (WHO), tobacco smoking and chewing is the second
leading cause of death around the world. When a person puffs a cigarette or chews tobacco, 7000
chemicals come into his/her contact and 69 of these are carcinogens (substances that cause cancer).
One of the main chemicals found in tobacco products like a cigarette is Nicotine, a poisonous
stimulant, and highly addictive substance. A stimulant drug increases the Central Nervous System
(CNS) activity. The CNS controls all body organs like the heart, lungs, and brain, and processes
heart rate, blood pressure rate respiration rate, and more.

Three Types of Smoke

1. Mainstream smoke – smoke that the smoker directly inhales.
2. Sidestream Smoke – exhaled smoke from a smoker and inhaled by other
people. Also called second-hand smoke (SHS) or environmental tobacco smoke
(ETS).
3. Thirdhand smoke- smoke that is left indoors and on surfaces. Also called
residual tobacco smoke (RTS) settles along with dust and can last for months.

Secondhand smoke is classified as a Group A carcinogen by the Environmental Protection Agency

(EPA), which means it can cause cancer in humans. Short-term exposure to second-hand smoke can
cause changes in the blood of a passive smoker. It increases heart rate and efficiency by making
blood platelets stickier and adding pressure to blood vessels, causing damage to the linings.

Smoking is harmful to one's health in any way. Even smokers are aware of this, but they continue to
smoke. They unconsciously put their loved ones in danger by inhaling secondhand smoke.

Learning Competencies
• Describes the harmful short and long-term effects of cigarette smoking on the different parts
of the body. (H8S-IVb-c-29)
• Discusses the dangers of mainstream, second hand and third-hand smoke. (H8S-IVb-c-29)

ACTIVITY #2
I. Direction: Write the word TRUE if the statement is correct and FALSE if incorrect.
_______1. Smoke from cigarettes is dangerous to one’s health.
_______2. Mainstream smoke is the smoke that comes out from the lighted end of a cigarette.
_______3. Cigarette smoking is one leading cause of death.
_______4. Smoking especially in public places is prohibited.
_______5. It is not harmful when a person smokes in moderation.
_______6. Smoke does not settle along with dust and other surfaces.
_______7. The smoker must be aware of the dangers it can bring to the environment.
_______8. Sidestream smoke is also known as residual tobacco smoke.
_______9. Through second-hand smoke, it causes pollutants to the atmosphere
_______10. Smoking is the best way to feel relaxed.

III. IMPACT OF CIGARETTE SMOKING

Smoking is not good for the health of any person. Even smokers
know this, but they still smoke cigarettes. Unknowingly, they put
their loved ones at risk because of secondhand smoke. The reasons
are as follows
• Secondhand smoke has increased the risk of spouses
and children getting cancer and heart disease.
• Babies whose parents smoke are more likely to have an ear infection, pneumonia, and

bronchitis in the first years of their lives. The risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)
is high also.
It releases toxic pollutants into the atmosphere and pollutes the environment. The cigarette butts
that are thrown by the users into the environment release chemicals that seep into the soil and
waterways, thus, polluting the soil and water.

NEGATIVE HEALTH IMPACT OF DRINKING ALCOHOL

ALCOHOL
It is a colorless, bitter-tasting substance that humans have been consuming since ancient
times. It comes from plants and undergoes fermentation (the process of extracting alcohol from a
plant or some fruit). Beer is an example of fermented alcohol from grains, while wines are from
grapes and other fruits.
There are three types of ALCOHOL
• Isopropyl
• Methanol
• Ethanol
Isopropyl and methanol are used in laboratories and are
poisonous and fatal if taken. On the other hand, ethanol is also
called beverage alcohol. If humans consume this in an
unregulated amount, it may cause intoxication and alteration of
the nervous system.

What are the negative effects of alcohol?

Too much alcohol can be bad for the body. Excessive consumption of alcohol can harm a person’s
health.
• liver disease, including cirrhosis and life-threatening liver failure requires the person to have
a liver transplant
• a higher risk of having high blood pressure, dementia, and heart failure.
• Certain cancers can occur in the digestive tract like the colon, Cancer of the breast and liver
may occur also.
• Injuries from drunk driving and falls, homicides, and suicides are attributed to alcohol.
• Drunk individuals may engage in sexual offenses and may use other drugs to satisfy
themselves

• Anxiety, depression, and addiction may affect the social interaction between neighbors and
employers.
• Too much alcohol may lead to alcohol poisoning and death.
• Unborn children may be affected by alcohol. It is called fetal alcohol syndrome and may
cause problems in brain development and abnormalities.

Learning Competencies
• Explain the impact of cigarette smoking on the family, environment, and community.
(H8S-IVb-c-29)
• Analyzes the negative health impact of drinking alcohol. (H8S-IVe-f-31)
• Describes the harmful short and long-term effects of drinking alcohol. (H8S-IVe-f-31)

ACTIVITY#3
PERFORMANCE TASK #1
(PeTa)

Direction: In an Oslo paper/ bond paper or any

software that you wish to use, make your own
INFOGRAPHICS about the negative effects of
alcohol on the body. Think of a suited title for your
output. Do not forget to apply color to your work.
You may use the picture on the right side as your
guide.

IV. BLOOD ALCOHOL CONCENTRATION

Alcohol goes inside all parts of the body when it enters the bloodstream.
The amount of alcohol in the blood can be measured in a percentage called the
blood alcohol concentration (BAC) or blood alcohol level (BAL). A 0.05
percent BAC means there are five (5) parts of alcohol per 10,000 parts of blood
in the body. A high concentration of alcohol like 0.3-0.5 percent of BAC could
cause brain damage, coma, and even death.
