HEALTH – WEEK 1 – COMPETENCY 1
GATEWAY DRUGS

Name: _________________________________ Grade Level: ______________

WHAT TO KNOW (ALAMIN MO)

Discusses gateway drugs- H8S-Iva-27

BRIEF DISCUSION OF THE LESSON

What Are Gateway Drugs?

Gateway drugs are introductory, habit-forming substances that give way to more severe
drug use down the road. They are typically milder, fairly-accessible substances – for example,
alcohol or marijuana – that are first used in adolescence or young adulthood.

These easy-to-get, easy-to-use drugs familiarize young users with first feelings of
intoxication. Over time, it is thought that young users gain confidence and decide, “Hey, if I
can handle this, what else can I try that will get me high?”

That’s where the gateway effect comes in – young users who try one drug are more
likely to try more. Most often, the substances they take the second- or third- time around are
stronger, with more risky side effects: heroin, prescription pills, cocaine. There is a science
behind this.
Gateway drugs are drugs (as alcohol or cigarettes) whose use is thought to lead to the
use of and dependence on a harder drug (as cocaine or heroin). Since cigarettes and alcohol are
readily available and generally accepted in our society.
Since cigarettes and alcohol are readily available and generally accepted in our society,
many people use them for various purposes. Teenagers like you are especially vulnerable
because you are curious and risk-takers. According to the study done by the National Youth
Commission (NYC), 2 out of 5 Filipino teenagers aged 13 to 15 years old smoke cigarettes
([Link], March 16, 2012). Furthermore, in a study conducted by an anti-tobacco group
in the year 2011, ten Filipinos die every year of tobacco-related diseases (Philippine Daily
Inquirer, Sept. 19, 2011). Health experts explained that the continuous increase in cigarette use
and alcohol consumption by Filipino teenagers is due to its very cheap price. Many pro-health
groups are now asking the government to study the editorial cartoon on the right side. Describe
the picture. Do you agree with what the picture intends to tell you? Gateway drugs such as
cigarettes and alcohol are legal drugs that a non-drug user might try, which can lead him/her to
more dangerous drugs such as marijuana and shabu.

WHAT TO KNOW
MELCS: Analyzes the negative health impact of cigarette smoking
• Describes the harmful short- and long-term effects of cigarette smoking on the
different parts of the body.
• Discusses the dangers of mainstream, second hand and third hand smoke;
• Explain the impact of cigarette smoking on the family, environment, and community.
H8S-IVb-c-29

Tobacco is a tall, leafy plant, originally grown in South and Central America, but now
cultivated throughout the world. There are many species of tobacco but Nicotiana tabacum or
sometimes called common tobacco is preferred for producing present day cigarettes. Tobacco
use has been recorded as early as 600-900 C.E. as carved drawings on stones, were
discovered in Mexico. American Indians smoked it for special religious occasions and
medical purposes only. They never smoked cigar every day.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), tobacco smoking and chewing is
the second leading cause of death around the world. It is responsible for the death of one in
ten adults worldwide approximately reaching about 5 million deaths in a year. It is estimated
that the death toll will rise to 10 million each year by the year 2020. Each time a person puffs
a cigarette or chew tobacco, more than 4,000 chemicals come into his/her contact. All of
these chemicals harm people in one way or another. In studies conducted, 43 of these
chemicals are known carcinogens. Carcinogens are substances which cause cancer. Nicotine,
the addictive drug found in tobacco products like cigarettes is a poisonous stimulant. A
stimulant drug increases the central nervous system (CNS) activity. The central nervous
system controls all body organs like the heart, lungs, brain, and processes like heart rate,
blood pressure rate, respiration rate, and more.

5 -MAPEH Health 8 Week 1 & 2

Smoking causes cancer, heart disease, stroke, lung diseases, diabetes, and chronic
obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes emphysema and chronic
bronchitis. Smoking also increases risk for tuberculosis, certain eye diseases, and problems of
the immune system, including rheumatoid arthritis.
Every time a cigarette is lit, smoke is emitted. There are three smokes produced by cigarette
smoking namely:
Mainstream Smoke – refers specifically to the smoke that a smoker directly inhales.

Side stream Smoke – the smoke that comes out of the lighted end of a cigarette or pipe.
This is also called “second-hand smoke” (SHS) or “environmental tobacco smoke (ETS).
This is more dangerous than mainstream smoke.

Third-hand Smoke – smoke left for a long time on sofa, beddings, pillow and other objects.
This smoke also called residual tobacco smoke (RTS) settles along with dust and can last for
months. This smoke still contains harmful chemicals and carcinogens

6 -MAPEH Health 8 Week 1 & 2

“What you reap is what you sow.”

According to Newton’s Third Law of Motion, in every action there is always equal
and opposite reaction. Realistically, smoking cigarette may cause harm and imbalances
towards family, environment and community.

Several researches found out the major impact of cigarette smoking to family,
environment and community as indicated below:

A. Family
1. Secondhand smoke, spouses and children of people who smoke have an
increased risk of cancer and heart disease.
2. Babies whose parents smoke are more likely to have ear infections,
pneumonia, and bronchitis in the first few years of their lives. They can also
possibly have higher risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).
3. Children of people who smoke are more likely to become smokers themselves.

B. Environment
1. Surveys and clinical studies prove that smoking cigarettes cause several health
risks for humans.
2. It has contributed to major deforestation in the areas where tobacco is planted.
3. The entire process of cultivating, curing, and transporting tobacco needs the
use of a large amount of chemical and other toxic materials which can harm
the environment and biological system.
4. It may also cause air pollution, soil and land pollution and any other related
pollutions.

C. Community
1. Smoking cigarette can harm everyone. Secondhand smoking can cause several
related diseases.
2. It can cause diminishing economic growth. If majority of the population in the
Philippines is experiencing related diseases caused by secondhand smoking, it
may cause economic problems.
3. Population might decrease.

WHAT TO KNOW (ALAMIN MO)

MELCS: Analyzes the negative health impact of drinking alcohol
● describes the harmful short- and long-term effects of drinking alcohol
● interprets blood alcohol concentration (BAC) in terms of physiological changes in the
body.
● explains the impact of drinking alcohol on the family, and community
(H8S-IVe-f-31) (H8S-IVg-h-32)

Alcohol is a colorless, bitter-tasting substance that humans have been consuming since
the ancient times. It comes from plants that underwent fermentation. Fermentation is the
process of extracting alcohol from a plant or a fruit. An example of fermented alcohol is a beer.
A beer is extracted from grains. On the other hand, wines are from grapes and other fruits.
There are three types of alcohol: isopropyl, methanol, and ethanol. Isopropyl and methanol are
used in laboratories and are poisonous and fatal if taken. On the other hand, ethanol is also
called the beverage alcohol. When humans consume this in an unregulated amount, it may
result in intoxication and alteration of the nervous system.

Do you know that alcohol is a depressant? It means that when taken, it slows down the
processes of a person’s central nervous system. It is not true that alcohol gives extra strength
and energy. In addition, alcohol has very little nutritional value. They only provide empty
calories.

ACTIVITY NO. 1 The Alcohol Path

How does alcohol go into your body? How is it absorbed? Fill in the blanks with
correct information.
Alcohol enters the body first through the ______________.
In the __________, alcohol is converted into water, and carbon dioxide.
Most alcohol enters the bloodstream through the ____________________.
Within 10-20 heartbeats, alcohol in the bloodstream reaches the_________________.
The ____________________ pumps alcohol in the bloodstream throughout the body.
Alcohol is filtered in the ___________, leaving salts and acids, and then exits the
body through urination.

LET US REMEMBER (TANDAAN MO)

Effects of Alcohol Drinking

When alcohol enters the bloodstream, it goes in all the parts of the body. The main
effect of alcohol drinking reflects on a person’s central nervous system (CNS). The CNS
controls one’s mental processes, memory, speech, learning and decision-making. It also affects
a person’s senses, feelings, movement, and breathing.

The amount of alcohol that entered in the bloodstream at a certain period can be
measured in percentages through blood-alcohol concentration (BAC) or most often called
blood alcohol level (BAL). A BAC of 0.05 percent means there are 5 parts of alcohol per
10,000 parts of blood in the body. A 0.3- 0.5 percent BAC could lead to coma, brain damages,
and death.

ACTIVITY NO. 2 Bottoms Up?

Study the situations below. What are the physical and mental effects of every alcohol

MELCS: Discusses strategies in the prevention and control of cigarette smoking and
drinking alcoholic beverages
• apply resistance skills in situations related to cigarette and alcohol use
• follows policies and laws in the family, school and community related to cigarette and
alcohol use (H8S-IVg-h-33)

Brief Discussion of the lesson

Gateway drugs such as cigarettes and alcohol are legal drugs that a non-drug user
might try, which can lead him/her to more dangerous drugs such as marijuana and shabu. In
this such situation, there are strategies that we need to practice in able to prevent and control
taking of cigarette smoking and drinking alcohol beverages. There are many bad effects of
this drugs that can cause into serious diseases.

LETS TRY! List Down at list 5 bad effects of alcohol drinking and cigarette smoking

16 -MAPEH Health 8 Week 1 & 2

ALCOHOL DRINKING CIGARETTE SMOKING

LET US STUDY (PAG-ARALAN MO)

Having the strategies to prevent alcohol drinking and cigarette smoking is really
important for us to lessen the number of people died in taking this drugs. These are the
following resistance skills in situations related to cigarette and alcohol use;

Practice on how to say NO!

Step 1: What is the problem? Say what is wrong. Say “That it is wrong.”, “Smoking is bad.”, “That is
prohibited.”, or “Drinking alcohol is against the school rules.”

Step 2: What could happen? Ask the following:  Could anyone be harmed if I do it? How?  Could
it get into trouble?  Would it make one feel bad if I do it?

Step 3: What are the ways of saying NO? Choose from any of the following: Say No. “No, I‟m not
interested,” or simply say “No”  Change the topic. Say “I‟m going to the park, you can come with
me.” or “Would you like to see a movie with me?”  Tell the truth. Say “I hate smoking. It makes my
breath smell bad.”, “Smoking makes the body smell stink.” or “I‟m too young to die.”  Joke about it.
Say “My parents are good at smelling, I won‟t get past them.” or “Are you really ready to die? I‟m
not!”  Give reasons. “I don‟t smoke, it‟s bad for the health.”, “I‟m pro environment, smoking makes
the air dirty,” or “I have a training today, I need clean air to get going,” or “Let‟s play basketball, beat
me!” Tell a story. Say “My father got really sick with smoking. It was painful.”, or “My
grandmother died from smoking. I don‟t want that to happen to me or to you!” Walk away if you
can’t change your friend’s mind.

17 -MAPEH Health 8 Week 1 & 2

These are the policies and laws in the family, school and community related to
cigarette and alcohol use;
