Topic 1.
PROPERTIES OF MATTER
8
(Gr. 3)
9
SOLID
+ Can be hard or soft
+ Malleable – can be formed into
different shapes
+ Ductile – can be drawn into wires
+ Brittle – can be broken easily by
applying force
10
LIQUID
+ Takes the shape of the container
+ Has the ability to flow
11
GAS
+ Can freely change its shape and size
+ Spreads out to fill the container
+ Light and cannot be seen
12
Volume
- Depending on the amount of space it
occupies
13
Grouping Materials Based on Properties (Gr. 4)
+ Buoyancy – ability of materials to float on
water
14
Grouping Materials Based on Properties (Gr. 4)
+ Den si t y – measure of the
amount of matter in a given
volume of liquid
D = mass/volume
*if density of the object <
density of the liquid, the
object will float
15
Grouping Materials Based on Properties (Gr. 4)
+ P or osi t y – property that
allows it to absorb water and
other liquids
+ Absorbent
+ Non-absorbent
16
Grouping Materials Based on Properties (Gr. 4)
+ Decom posi t i on – property that allows
materials to break down into simpler or smaller
forms of matter
17
18
Factors affecting decomposition (GR. 4)
Presence of
organisms that Temperature Moisture
cause decay
19
Factors affecting Decomposition (Gr. 4)
+ Presence of organisms that cause decay
+ Detritivores
+ Fungi
+ Bacteria
20
Factors affecting Decomposition (Gr. 4)
+ Temperature
+ Warm temperature = faster decay process
21
Factors affecting Decomposition (Gr. 4)
+ Moisture
+ More presence of water = faster
decomposition
22
Factors affecting Decomposition (Gr. 4)
+ Exposure to elements
+ Less contact with air which contains
bacteria
23
Factors affecting Decomposition (Gr. 4)
+ Salt content of material
+ Salty food = slower decay
24
“
What are the effects of
decay on our health?
25
26
Useful or Harmful Materials (Gr. 5)
+ Household materials and
consumer products
+ for cleaning
+ For food preparations
+ Beautification
+ Building construction
+ Household products
27
Useful or Harmful Materials (Gr. 5)
+ Materials enhanced or upgraded by technology
28
Useful or Harmful Materials (Gr. 5)
+ Materials found in products
29
Useful or Harmful Materials (Gr. 5)
+ Materials that have
beneficial effects at
home and in the
environment
30
Useful or Harmful Materials (Gr. 5)
+ Materials that
contain hazardous
substance
31
Useful or Harmful Materials (Gr. 5)
+ Chemicals that can
contaminate food
32
MIXTURES AND THEIR CHARACTERISTICS (Gr. 6)
+ Mixture – made up of 2 or more substances
that are put together by physical means
33
Basic Characteristics of Mixtures
+ The composition + The components + The components
