A solution is required to the equation sin 𝑥 − 𝑒 0.5𝑥 + 1 = 0. There is a root 𝛼 in the


interval [1, 2] and 𝑥 is measured in radians.

(a) Use linear interpolation once on the interval [1, 2] to to find an approximation to 𝛼.
Give your answer to 3 decimal places. [4]

The equation has a second solution near to 𝑥 = −2.


(b) Using 𝑥0 = −2, apply the Newton-Raphson method once to find an approximate
value for this solution.
Give your answer to 3 decimal places. [4]
