JESUS’ BAPTISM AS AN ACT OF OBEDIENCE
AND RESPONSIBLE LEADERSHIP

This lesson will discuss the sacrament of baptism as the effective symbol of our sharing in the
divine life, and how does baptism teach us obedience to the will of the Father, and also to the will of
your superiors in the society. It will also discuss baptism as the start of the ministry of Jesus, hence
an example of responsible leadership.
Kindly put a check in the column that corresponds to your answer. Check the smiley face

Exercise 3.2: Bible Time!

Read and reflect on the passage from the Gospel of Matthew 3: 13-17
“The Baptism of Jesus at Jordan”

Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. But John tried to deter
him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” Jesus replied, “Let it be so
now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented.
As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was
opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice
from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with whom I am well pleased.”

Process Question:
1. If baptism is the cleansing of one’s sins, then why do you think Jesus allowed himself to be
baptized even though he did not commit sin?

The Baptism of Jesus

Jesus did not need to be baptized. The baptism by John the Baptist was a baptism of
repentance, and the sacrament of baptism removes original sin. Since Jesus had neither original sin
nor actual sin, he did not need to undergo baptism. However, Jesus also had no need to be born, to
suffer, or to die as a man. He did so out of love for humanity.
John the Baptist appears to recognize the strangeness of Jesus asking to be baptized (Matt.
3:14) yet obeys Jesus’ request. Ultimately, the reason Jesus chose to be baptized in the Jordan by
John was not for him but for us.
Jesus’ baptism gave us an example to follow. It is his great act of humility and obedience to
God. The catechism tells us that “Jesus’ baptism began his public ministry”. His public ministry
reveals his leadership as the Son of God and Savior of the world.
The Catechism of the Catholic Church 536 says: “The baptism of Jesus is on his part the
acceptance and inauguration of his mission as God's suffering Servant. He allows himself to be
numbered among sinners; he is already "the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world".
Already he is anticipating the "baptism" of his bloody death.233 Already he is coming to "fulfill all
righteousness", that is, he is submitting himself entirely to his Father's will: out of love he consents to
this baptism of death for the remission of our sins. The Father's voice responds to the Son's
acceptance, proclaiming his entire delight in his Son. The Spirit whom Jesus possessed in fullness
from his conception comes to "rest on him". Jesus will be the source of the Spirit for all mankind.”

Exercise 3.3.

Inside the box, answer the question: “How did Jesus’ baptism reveal his person and mission?”

QUALITIES OF A GOOD LEADER

When talking about great leaders, who do you remember? What qualities of him do you admire
most? Perhaps you have seen, observed, and experienced under his leadership the qualities of a good
leader. Some of these are as follows:
1. A responsible leader is good at planning and decision making. One of the important roles a
leader needs to perform is planning and decision -making. Jesus’ decisions and plans always
depend on the will of the Father. Before taking actions, Jesus is seen in the biblical texts praying
to His Father. A Christian leader should perform his responsibilities of planning and deciding
with the guidance of prayer and divine intervention.
2. A responsible leader has integrity. A leader will find it difficult to lead if the people he leads
does not trust him and does not give him the respect he needs. The trust and respect that a leader
need can only be gained by him if he continues to walk with integrity. Jesus, in his ministry is
true, genuine, reliable, trustworthy and valid, making him a man of integrity. As a Christian
leader, we need to establish our integrity so that the people we lead may have a sense of trust in
us.
3. A responsible leader is an example and inspiration. A good leader is a role model. He serves as
an inspiration to his constituents. He has the ability to motivate members to work diligently for
the success of their aims. The example and inspiration given to us by Jesus is a strong
manifestation of a perfect leader worthy of imitation.
4. A responsible leader has a positive outlook and attitude. A good leader has a positive attitude
and meaningful outlook in life. He needs a positive outlook with the hope that he will be able to
fulfill his role to achieve the goals of their group. In his public ministry, he demonstrated an
attitude that is really positive. He always believes that people can change if they will just open
themselves to the love and mercy of God. As a Christian leader, this character of leader should be
adapted always. There is no such thing as a perfect community, that is why as a leader, you need
to have a positive attitude and outlook.
5. A responsible leader knows how to resolve problems. The great quality of a leader is the ability
to identify problems so that they can be solved. In all his public life, Jesus was able to notice all
the injustices in their society. He did this not only to criticize their government but to also present
them the solutions to these issues.

JESUS’ EXPERIENCE OF TEMPTATION
TEACHES US HOW TO MANAGE OUR
EMOTIONS

This lesson will discuss the temptation of Jesus and how he managed himself so as not to fall to
the temptation of the devil. This episode in the life of Jesus is the scriptural foundation on how we
can teach management of our emotions.

Exercise 4.2: Bible Time!

Read and reflect on the passage from the Gospel of Matthew 3: 13-17
“The Temptation of Jesus in the Wilderness”

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after
He had fasted for forty days and forty nights, He then became hungry. And the tempter came and
said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” But He
answered and said, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes
out of the mouth of God.’” Then the devil *took Him along into the holy city and had Him stand on
the pinnacle of the temple, and he *said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down;
for it is written: ‘He will give His angels orders concerning You’; and ‘On their hands they will lift
You up, so that You do not strike Your foot against a stone.’” Jesus said to him, “On the other hand,
it is written: ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” Again, the devil *took Him along to
a very high mountain and *showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory; and he said
to Him, “All these things I will give You, if You fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus *said to
him, “Go away, Satan! For it is written: ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and serve Him
only.’” Then the devil *left Him; and behold, angels came and began to serve Him.

Process Question:
1. If you were on the same situation, would you do the same as Jesus did or you will submit to your
emotions and give in to the temptation? Why?

The Temptation of Jesus

The Holy Spirit led him into the huge fifteen-by-thirty-five-mile desert
between the mountain of Jerusalem and the Dead Sea so that he could
pray to the Father about the public ministry which he was about to
commence. He prayed and fasted for an incredible forty days, which
obviously would have left him physically weak and in famished. It was at
this moment that the devil came to him to tempt him. Much like God the
Father had once allowed Job to be tested, the same Father allowed his Son
to be tempted. In the temptations Jesus suffered and later described to his
disciples, the devil brought out in a pristine form the types of temptation
that Christ would undergo in his public ministry and that each of us
undergoes in our lives. By focusing on how Christ responded, we, too, can
learn how to react to the various temptations we encounter.
1. The first temptation was aimed right at Jesus' tremendous hunger: "If you are the Son of God,
command this stone to become a loaf of Bread." When the Israelites were in the desert, Satan
successfully tempted them to grumble to God to feed them (Ex 16:3ff). Satan was tempting Jesus
to recapitulate the Israelites' lack of trust in God. Jesus would have nothing of it. Satan, moreover,
was trying to tempt Jesus away from his mission. Jesus had come to save people, to feed their
most important hunger — the hunger of their souls — and Satan was trying to induce the Lord to
become a baker rather than a Savior.

19 | P a g e C.L.E. 8 - Module 2 (2nd Quarter)
2. In the second temptation, the devil presented Jesus with a vision of all the kingdoms of the world
and said to him, "To you I will give their glory and all this authority Š if you Š will worship me."
Jesus was preparing to become the King of Kings, the Lord of heaven and earth, but that was
going to happen through humility and the Cross. The devil was proposing a short cut, another
way, an easier way. "I'll give it all to you if you fall down and worship me." The devil had gotten
the Israelites in the desert to succumb to this temptation to worship him in a golden calf, rather
than to trust in the God with whom Moses was speaking on the mountain. But he failed with
Jesus, who said to him, "Worship the Lord your God, and serve him alone."
3. In the third temptation, the devil tried to tempt Jesus to test God the Father. He even misused
Sacred Scripture to do so: "Throw yourself down from [this pinnacle], for it is written, ŒHe will
command his angels concerning you, to protect you,' and on their hands they will bear you up, so
that you will not dash your foot against a stone' (cf. Ps 91)." The devil had succeeded in getting
the Israelites to test God while they were in the desert. He got them to complain that Moses had
brought them out into the desert to kill them and their children of thirst, and they were about
ready to kill Moses. They said, "Is the Lord among us or not?" (Ex 17:1-7). Jesus didn't succumb
to the same temptation. He replied, "It is written, Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'"
The Devil subjected Jesus to "every test", but Jesus never succumbed. The devil exists and he is
trying to tempt us in every way away from God, away from our mission, away from our vocation and
dignity. Jesus, however, knows what we're going through and has taught us the way to overcome
these temptations, by imitating him and his responses.

Exercise 4.3.

Inside the box, answer the question: “How can the temptation of Jesus teach us on how to manage
our emotions?”

What is emotion and why is it significant?

We all experience different types of emotions and feelings and our ways of expressing them
vary. Someone knows how to handle it. There are also some who cannot control their emotions and
send in the depth and intensity of their emotions. Do you know how to manage your emotions? Have
you ever experienced managing your emotions?
Most of us have developed a love-hate affair with the emotions. We recognize, at least in part,
that emotions are central to what it means to live life, to be human, and to experience reality. As
Robert Solomon puts it, “We live our lives through our emotions, and it is our emotions that give our
lives meaning. What interests or fascinates us, who we love, what angers us, what moves us, what
bores us—all of this defines us, gives us character, constitutes who we are.”1 When we talk with one
another, our conversations often focus on emotions. We ask, “How are you?” Then we share, at least
with those close to us, what makes us upset, what brings us joy, what saddens us, and what makes us
smile.
With a touch of humor, psychologists Fehr and Russell have observed, “Everyone knows
what an emotion is, until asked to give a definition.” What exactly are they? Obviously, we feel
emotions—sometimes in overpowering ways. They trigger physiological responses within us,
whether tears or smiles, an inner tightening or “the lifting of a load. Emotions thus involve our bodies
in profound ways. However, emotions also involve our minds. The feelings we have stem from
judgments we make about the world around us. Sometimes, these judgments happen so quickly that

C.L.E. 8 - Module 2 (2nd Quarter) P a g e | 20
we do not even realize we are making them. But at their core, emotions involve assessments,
typically regarding things that matter deeply to us and things we cannot fully control.
Your knowledge and ability to identify your true feelings is essential so that it can be nurtured and
managed correctly. Read the eight main human emotions to better understand how you feel:

1. Anger (Pagkagalit) - feelings of intense resentment and dislike for someone or something
because it causes you or another person bad feelings or pain
2. Disgust (Pagkamuhi) - intense feelings of annoyance or disgust at another person or thing
3. Sadness (Pagkalungkot) - grief or sorrow in connection with the loss of a loved one or something
important
4. Surprise (Pagkagulat) - feelings caused by a sudden event or unexpected thing
5. Fear (Pagkatakot) - concern for self-harm, whether real or imagined danger, and presumption of
inability to overcome danger
6. Acceptance (Pagtanggap) - a feeling of accepting what is offered or given, or a feeling of being
comfortable because of the acceptance of others
7. Joy (Pagkagalak) - intense feelings of pleasure, happiness, or joy
8. Anticipation (Pag-asam) - positive feelings or waiting for something good to happen in the
future
Emotional intelligence is gained through a realistic analysis of our emotions and feelings.
Emotions have a great deal to do with our experience of happiness in life. Here is the key to a healthy
and healthy relationship with oneself and others. Often, we blame others for our feelings or emotions.
This frequently results in the breakdown of our good relationships with others. It is not easy to form a
beautiful and deep relationship with another person and it is embarrassing if it is lost just because of a
flurry of bad feelings.

HANDLING EMOTIONS
How do we handle our feelings? How do we fix them when they are broken? How do we keep
our emotions from taking control of our lives?
God did not leave us to handle our emotions on our own. He didn’t say, “Here, I am giving you
this jumble of confusing feelings. Hope you can figure them out on your own.” No, God has given us
everything we need in his Word to learn how to manage our feelings and glorify him with our
emotions.
1. Start with God
When it comes to emotions, we tend to start with how we feel, how we want to feel, or how
others expect us to feel—instead of with God. Because sin permeates our emotions, we’re more likely
to turn inward with our emotions, rather than outward toward God. We have the strongest feelings
about what we want, what we fear, what we treasure, and what we despise. Jesus in his forty-day
retreat in the desert, he focused himself to God. He gave himself time to be alone with God because
he wants his Father to seize his emotions and his whole self.
2. Watch and Pray
“Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation,” Jesus told his disciples. We should be
watchful and careful to avoid or eliminate predictable sources of emotional temptation. For example,
if your daily intake of “breaking news” is tempting you to fear, perhaps you should shut it off. Or if
your social media habits cause you to feel discontent, then maybe you should stop checking your
phone. Jesus stayed in the desert in a prayerful manner, that is why the devil wants to confuse him
and disturb his mind and his prayerful silence.
3. Think on Truth
Many of us get stuck in sinful thought patterns that fuel our emotions. Maybe we stew over
someone’s sin against us, weave imaginary and fearful scenarios, or brood about our sins and
weaknesses. To manage our emotions in a biblical way, we need to stop ruminating on sinful
San Sebastian School, Inc.
Science City of Muñoz, Nueva Ecija

thoughts and meditate on the truth of God’s Word. “Whatever is true . . . think about these things . . .
and the peace of God will be with you” (Phil. 4:8–9). When the devil started to throw tempting words
to Jesus, the latter did not submit to the cunning of the devil, but remained in the truth of his Father.
He was able to cast out the devil because of the words of Truth that the devil would never accept,
because he is the King of Lies.
4. Act to Feel
Like a pin to a balloon, a single word or action can release the pressure from emotional
temptation. In some cases, we should do the opposite of whatever we feel like doing. If you feel like
criticizing, say something complimentary; if you feel like complaining, express gratitude; if you feel
like withdrawing, start a conversation; if you feel like brooding, sing a hymn. Get out of bed. Wash
the dishes. Start a load of laundry. Take the dog for a stroll. Walk away from the conflict. In other
words, take one action to turn from temptation and toward something constructive. In other words,
obey Scripture, which tells us to “turn away from evil and do good” (Ps. 34:14). (www.crossway.org)
