Mentimeter is an online polling tool which can add an interactive element to a lecture,
presentation or recorded session. Question types include Multiple Choice, Ranking,
Scales, Word Cloud and Open Ended, among others. It can be used for icebreakers,
checking knowledge, gauging opinion and prompting debate.
The most common question type is Multiple Choice, in which participants can
choose between several options that you provide. You’re probably already
quite familiar with this type of question, since it has been widely used for
surveys.
Multiple Choice is suitable when you already know what options you want the
participants to vote on, i.e. you want your audience to choose only from a few
pre-defined options.

The Multiple Choice question type is one of our most popular due to its versatility, meaning it can be
used in many different situations. This article outlines five different tips that you will find useful
when creating your next Multiple Choice questions with Mentimeter! creating Multiple Choice
Questions with Mentimeter
1. Make sure that your question is clearly formulated
The best way to guarantee the most accurate answers on your multiple choice question is to start off
with a well-formulated question. Ensure that your question is clear and easy to understand by
keeping it short, precise, and by using simple language. Long and complicated questions may take
more time to explain to your audience and there is a greater risk that your audience may not
understand the question you’re asking.
Sometimes, a multiple choice question might not give you all the information you need. By using an
open-ended question to follow up your multiple choice question, you can add follow up questions
that will help you to gather more in-depth data from your audience that can help spark discussion or
take action. Use questions such as “Why did you choose that answer?” or “How did you come to that
answer?” in order to prompt your audience into sharing more information.
You might find that you can’t (or don’t want to) cover all possible options with a multiple choice
question. If that is the case, then consider adding an “other” option which the audience can vote on
if they do not see the option they want. This will capture all the "other" answers from your audience
and ensure that the data isn’t inaccurate.
Do you want your audience to select one or several answers from the list? With Mentimeter you can
decide on which setup you would prefer. If you have a question that requires one answer, such as
“Which option do you prefer?”, then you want to limit the audience’s ability to vote on more than
one option. However, if you have a question such as “Which days of the week do you go to the
gym?” you will probably want to let your audience select one or more options.
Use the Image Choice question to add images and gifs to multiple choice questions when using
Mentimeter. Not only will adding images make your presentation look more interesting, but it can
also help your audience visualize the answers better and improve the learning experience.
The Multiple Choice question type is just one of many that you can use! Explore these resources

engaging.
Challenge your audience by making them guess the correct answer in free text!
The Type Answer Quiz is perfect for when you want to test the participants’ ability to figure out the
correct answer without having options to choose from! The participants need to type the correct
answer (or versions of it, see below!) before the time to answer is up.
You can mix Type Answer slides with Select Answer slides to create a full
Quiz Competition.
How to create a Type Answer question:
1. Add a new slide
2. Choose the ‘Type Answer’ Quiz competition type
3. Enter your question
4. Enter the correct answer to display. This will show up on the
presentation screen when the time to answer has run out or everyone
has answered
5. Optionally, you can add other acceptable answers. These will not be
shown on the presentation screen but if a participant enters an
answer that match any of these it will also be marked as correct

Simply use Mentimeter to ask a question, present it to your audience, and let them add
words with their smartphone or other device. Answers appear in real-time to build
dynamic Word Cloud. The bigger the word or emoji, the more people have submitted it,
making it easy to quickly spot which answers are most popular.
Scales questions
Use Scales questions to let your audience submit numeric answers
or rate statements.
With the Scales question type, participants can rate statements on a scale. This is good to use
if you have questions with numeric answers, want the audience to rate something, or if you
want to generate statistics that you can use for analyzing trends and tendencies.
When moving the slider to any of the high, low or mid value labels on your
Scales question, you will see auto-suggestions appear in the voting view.
Those enable tooltips for the voters; helping them to interpret different
numerical values in a Likert scale.
When you get a vote, it will slide from left to right corresponding to the participant's answer. You
will also see the distribution of votes as a graph just above the specific lines. With more votes, the
number in the circle will show the weighted average of all the votes. You can read more about voting
on Scales questions here.
Leaderboard.
One of the elements that make a Mentimeter pub quiz more fun than a traditional style pub
quiz is the leaderboard feature. The leaderboard automatically calculates the points
after each question, and displays the top ten teams in a colorful leaderboard.
