make up a computer system.
2. A type of software that manages computer hardware, software
resources, and provides common services for computer programs.
3. These are small software programs that help the operating system use
or “drive” the device or peripherals connected to a computer.

Let’s Understand (Study the Concept)

Updates and Patches

Updating and Patching are the procedures that occur whenever a computer’s
Operating System, drivers, applications or security software installed on it are being upgraded
to the latest version. Although those two terms are different. Updates usually provide new
features or enhance the functionality of the specific software, hardware and peripherals
connected to a computer, whereas Patches fix bugs and glitches by addressing specific
vulnerabilities on a software program or application. Both occur when we download and install
upgraded versions of software to any device or computer.

Downloading the latest version or simply updating the software (especially OS and the
device drivers) is one of the most basic practices to maintain the computer in its good
operational condition. Not only it provides new features, but also it keeps the computer free
from harm by fixing errors identified by the software developers of the product. However, we
must always remember that updates and patches vary with the period as to when the computer
hardware was manufactured by the manufacturer. In such cases, we must check first if the
computer hardware is compatible with the latest update or patch.

Installing Windows OS Updates/ Patches

The Windows operating system routinely checks the Windows Update website for high-
priority updates that can help protect a computer from the latest security threat. These updates
can include security updates, critical updates, and service packs. Depending on the setting
you choose, Windows automatically downloads and installs any high-priority updates that a
computer needs, or notifies the user as these updates become available. Updates must be
installed, not just downloaded. If we use the Automatic setting, we can schedule the time and
day. Otherwise, new updates are installed at 3 a.m. by default. If the computer is powered off
during a scheduled update, updates are installed the next time it is powered back on. We can
also choose to have Windows notify us when a new update is available and install the update
ourselves.

If the Windows Update says it is up to date, then it already runs the latest version.
Another way to check is simply by clicking the Start menu and then on the search bar, type
Windows Update in the text field.

To update Windows XP, 7, 8, 8.1, and 10 Operating System:
1. Open Windows Update by clicking the Start button in the lower-left corner. In the
search box, type Update, and then, in the list of results, click either Windows
Update or Check for updates (for Windows XP, click on All Programs from the Start
menu)
2. Click the Check for updates button and then wait while Windows looks for the latest
updates for the computer
3. If you see a message telling you that important updates are available, or telling you
to review important updates, click the message to view and select the important
updates to download or install
4. In the list, click the important updates for more information. Select the checkboxes
for any updates that you want to install, and then click OK
5. Click Install updates

Installing Drivers Updates/ Patches

From the previous module, we’ve learned that devices/ peripherals we often connect
to a computer to enhance its capability require pieces of software to work. Those are what we
call Drivers for devices/ peripherals, or simply known as Device Drivers.

Like other software, device drivers also require to be updated and be patched to
enhance the functionality of certain devices and peripherals, to fix bugs and glitches as well
that may affect the functionality of the device being driven, and to ensure that the connected
device is compatible to the current OS version of the computer. Most device drivers are
updated and patched as we update the OS to the latest version. But some device drivers
(depending on the manufacturer of the device or peripheral) require manual updates. In
addition, checking drivers’ update version is also one of the most fundamental troubleshooting
steps to diagnose a device specially when issues on its functionality is noticed.

To determine if the device driver requires an update, we can use the Device Manager.
Device Manager, just like the Windows Update, is a type of Control Panel applet that allows
the user to view, check, diagnose and update device drivers. To launch the Device Manager,
simply click the Start menu from the computer home screen and then type Device Manager in
the search bar. We can also open the device manager by navigating to:
● Start menu
● Control Panel
● Hardware and Sound
● Device Manager

Figure 3.2 Device Manager

3
Device Manager displays the list of hardware devices and peripherals installed on a
computer. Clicking the dropdown menu beside the device name will display the corresponding
driver(s). When we right-click on those, we’ll be able to see additional options, like Update,
Disable, Uninstall, Scan and Properties. Selecting Update will allow you to install the latest
version of the driver. By clicking Properties, you’ll be able to see the current version of a
particular device driver running on the computer.

Important Reminders
Certainly, updating the OS and drivers’ version is one step to maintain the good
operational condition of a computer as well as the peripherals. However, prior to installation
of updates and patches, it is important to check the following:
● Backup your computer – updating OS and drivers may cause changes in settings and
sometimes data loss if any error occurs while the update is in progress. It is important to
check if the computer has recently been backed up prior to installation of updates.
● Connect to a power source – installation of patches and updates may take a few minutes
depending on how outdated the version being updated was, so it is a must that the
computer is connected to a stable power source. In addition, interrupted installation of
updates may also lead to serious problems. Using Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) is
one of the best ways to keep the power source secured.
● Connect to the internet – updates and patches for OS and drivers require internet
connectivity to download those in a form of file. It is also important to keep the computer
connected to a stable internet connection while updates and patches are being
downloaded and installed from the web resources.
● Check compatibility and support – some device drivers may require specific system
requirements. By contacting the manufacturer or by visiting their website, we can check if
the versions support such system requirements.
● Check storage space – updates and patches, like other downloadable files from the web,
consume storage space on a computer. Always check and see to it that there’s enough
space to download and store update and patch data.

Let’s Apply

Direction: I Based on the given situations, select the correct answer and write it on your
answer sheets.
