Quarter: 1 Week: 6 Day: 1 Activity No. 21
Competency: Install operating system and drivers for peripherals/ devices (TLE_IACSS9-12ICCS-IIa-j-

Objective: Describe the different PC drivers

Concept Notes:
A PC Driver is software that allows computer to communicate with hardware
devices. Without drivers, the devices you connect to your computer. Windows can
automatically check if there are drivers available for new devices that you connect to
your computer. For hardware that you've connected to your computer in the past,
updated drivers might become available at a later date; but those drivers aren't
installed automatically. To install these optional updates, go to Windows Update in
Control Panel, check for updates, and then view and install driver updates that are
available for your
computer.

Device drivers - A device driver is a computer program that helps

your hardware communicate with your operating system. Every piece
of hardware in your computer has a driver or driver pack.

Examples of hardware are printers, keyboards, monitors, printers,

graphic cards,
sound cards, and so on.

BIOS driver - The BIOS (basic input/output system) is a chip on the computer's
motherboard that runs a program when your computer boots. Its purpose is to start the
different pieces of hardware on your computer, such as your screen, mouse, keyboard,
and hard disks.

Motherboard Drivers - These drivers interact directly with the

operating system (such as Windows) and let your computer run all the
features of your motherboard.
Hardware Device Drivers - Everything that connects one way or another
to your motherboard is a device that requires its own specific driver or set
of drivers. These devices include peripheral devices, such as input/output
devices, network cards and expansion slots.

Virtual device drivers - Virtual device drivers emulate a piece of

hardware to make the computer recognize a program as actual hardware. The most
commonly used virtual device is a virtual CD/DVD drive that allows the computer to read
an .ISO image file from a hard disk, without having to mount it on an actual CD/DVD.

Identification. Identify the following statement, write your answer beside the number.
_______________ 1. it emulates a piece of hardware to make the computer recognize a program as actual
hardware.
_______________ 2. These drivers interact directly with the operating system and let your computer run all
the features of your motherboard.

_______________ 4. Everything that connects one way or another to your motherboard is a device that requires
its own specific driver or set of drivers.
_______________ 5. a computer program that helps your hardware communicate with your operating system.

Concept Notes:
A software update, which is sometimes called
a software patch, is a free download for an application,
operating system, or software suite that provides fixes
for features that aren't working as intended or adds
minor software enhancements and compatibility.

Software updates are released to address security

issues when they occur, address minor bugs discovered
in the software, improve the operation of hardware or
peripherals, and to add support for new models of
equipment.

Software Update is a free and instant informer special for those users who care to keep their
application up to date with new functions and better performance. Software Update offers
links to download software updates and ensures you are running the latest versions.

THE DIFFERENT SOFTWARE UPDATES

1. Operating System Updates

Update the operating system to prevent security compromises.
An operating system is the core set of programs that run a computer and upon which all other
programs rely in order to operate. Operating system updates are corrections for program
incompatibilities, discovered errors, and security vulnerabilities.

Why need to update my operating system?

Operating system updates often address security vulnerabilities that have been discovered or not previously
disclosed. If operating system updates are not installed in a timely manner it can lead to unauthorized access, theft
of personal, confidential, or Protected Health Information, or the destruction of data.

For those systems where automatic operating system updates are not available a plan should be put in
place which:

identifies which systems are not automatically updated,

states which resource(s) will be used to determine if an operating system update is available

directs how and by whom the update will be installed.

2. Update your apps - For many apps, regular updates provide new features and stability rather
than security patches, so it isn't necessary to update them as frequently.
3. Third-Party Software Updates -Third-party software describes any software created by
a third party and did not come with your computer's operating system.
4.PC UPDATER - is a free app for the Windows PC by RadarSync Ltd. which looks for your
driver and software updates for your system. It identifies, finds, downloads, and installs
essential updates for your computer's hardware and software which can help you prevent
computer problems such as crashes, security holes and bugs, components and peripherals.

Concept Notes:
Application Software: Applications software is capable of dealing with user inputs and helps
the user to complete the task. It is also called end-user programs or only an app. It resides above system
software. First user deal with system software after that he/she deals with application software. The end
user uses applications software for a specific purpose. Some examples of Application Software are Word
processing software, Spreadsheets Software, Presentation, Graphics, CAD/CAM, Sending email etc.

Types of Application Software: According to the need of users it is categorized into following types.
1) Presentation Software: Presentation program is a program to show the information in the form of slides.
We can add text, graphics video and images to slides to make them more informative.
The software has three components:
1) Text editor for inputting and formatting text.
2) Inserting graphics, text, video and other multimedia files.
3) Slideshow to display the information.
Presentation software helps the presenter to present their ideas with ease and visual information easy to
understand.
Example of presentation software: Microsoft's PowerPoint and Apple's Keynote.
2) Spreadsheet Software: Spreadsheet software is used to perform manipulate and calculations. In
spreadsheet software data is stored in intersection row and column. The intersection of row and column is
known as a cell. The cell labelled with the row and column label like A1, A2 etc. While entering data into the
cell, we can also define the data value like text, date, time, number.
3) Database Software: Database is a collection of data related to any applications. Today is environment
every application has some database where data regarding users stored. For this purpose, we used database
software. When we operate the application data is accessed from the database, and after manipulation, it gets
back stored in the database.
Database Management System (DBMS) software tool used for storing, modifying extracting and searching for
information within a database. MySQL, MS Access, Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle is the example of
database application Software.
4) Multimedia Software: Multimedia is a combination of text, graphics, audio and Multimedia software used
in the editing of video, audio and text.
Entertainment: This area deal with the general public, media and telecommunication. With the growth
entertainment mode, many application is available for mobile phone as well as the system. Like Music and
video entertainment app, navigation app, social networking application, news and weather application,
educational apps and e-book reader’s app for preparation of any type of exams.
5) Simulation Software: Simulation is an imitation of real world and environment. The simulation creates a
physical environment of the real world to represent the similar behaviour, function and key nature of the
selected topic. Simulation is technology for education, engineering, testing, training, video games and for
scientific modelling of natural systems to gain insight into their functioning.
6) Word Processing Software: Word Processing software is used to manipulate, format the text, to create
memos, letters, faxes and documents. Processing Software is used to format and beautify the text. It provides a
list of features.
