Exp. 4 Report Sheet (Oxidation Reduction Titration)

Due Date: 24.11.21 23:59
(10 pts) Purpose:
The aim of this experiment is to state percent purity of an unknown oxalate sample and getting
familiar with the titration in redox reactions by doing an experiment with oxidation of potassium
oxalate by potassium permanganate.
(30 pts) Experimental:
(10 pts) Write half reactions in this reaction.

(10 pts) Write the balanced reaction that is applied in this experiment?

(10 pts) Why an indicator is not used in the experiment? Explain.

In this experiment, excess amount of permanganate cause color change from colorless to pink to there
is no need to use indicator. In other word, the excess amount of permanganate act as a indicator.
(40 pts) Calculation:
Calculate the percent of sodium oxalate in the unknown sample (Measured values given at below
chart).

Trial 1 Trial 2 Trial 3

Mass of unknown, g 0.8237 0.7734 0.7992
Volume of KMnO4 solution, mL 13.0 14.0 12.0
Mass of K2C2O4 in unknown, g 0.313 0.337 0.290
Percent of K2C2O4 in unknown 38.0% 43.6% 36.3%
Average Percent of K2C2O4 in unknown 39.3%
Relative Average Deviation 7.29%
* Molarity of Standardized KMnO4 = 0.058 M
**Molecular Weight K2C2O4 = 166.22 g/mol
(20 pts) Conclusion:
(10 pts) According to your Relative Average Deviation, is your result precise? Explain.
The value of Relative Average Deviation (RAD) is 7.9% and it represents the uncertainty in the
measurements so Average percent of K2C2O4 is not precisely 39.3%, but ranges from 31.4% to 47.2%.
(10 pts) If unknown sample contains exactly 41.00% K2C2O4, is your result accurate? Explain.
Accuracy means the closeness of the value that obtained
from the experiment to the real value. By the data that
obtained from the experiment, it can be said that the
accuracy of the first trial is 92.7%, for the second trial
93.7%, for the third trial 88.5%, and lastly for the average
percent of K2C2O4 in unknown solution is 95.9%. If the error
rate and RAD value of the experiment compared, the error rate
is smaller than the RAD value so there is no serious systematic
error that needs to be fixed.
