TRIPLE LUMEN CENTRAL VENOUS CATHETER STANDARD SETUP

nes for Triple Lumen Central Venous Catheter Standard Set Up

Primary (largest) Lumen

 Used for emergency access, volume expander, intermittent medications, boluses, and blood products.
 A push port/access port (T-connector) is attached for intermittent access.
 Usually kept patent (TKVO) by a heparinized solution, e.g., D10W with heparin.

Secondary Lumen
 Used for TPN and/or dextrose solution.
 A push port/access port (T-connector) is attached for intermittent access.

Tertiary Lumen
 Used for vasoactive drugs, analgesics and/or sedatives.
 No push port/access port (T-connector) is attached to this lumen to avoid intermittent access resulting in an inadvertent push of
the vasoactive drugs, analgesics and/or sedatives.
 Aim for each solution to infuse at least 0.1 mL/hr. Heparinized D10W is infused to ensure the infusion rate on this arm is at
least 1mL/hr.

NOTE: The minimum rate of infusion to keep a CVC lumen patent is 1mL/hr if there is a heparinized solution and
2mL/hr if there is no heparinized solutions.
