2.0 INTRODUCTION

1
Navigating is an important skill that must be mustered by every forester in the
forest. In this day, the usage of traditional ways of navigation using compass and
map have been replaced by GPS whether by using dedicated devices for navigation
such as Garmin Handheld GPS or also using smart phones with installed GPS
application.

Skills on using GPS is very important to every forester. Not only that, but also very
important to have knowledge and skills on how to find a digital map or satellite
image using geo-browser as well as knowledge and skills on managing tracks and
points that have been recorded in GPS devices (Smart Phone or Handheld GPS) in
any Geographic INformation System (GIS) flatform.

The most important geo-browser that every forester must know how to use is
Google Earth. Google Earth is a geo-browser that accesses satellite and aerial
imagery, ocean bathymetry, topography, and other geographic data over the
internet to represent the earth as a three dimensional globe. Beside Google Earth,
every forester also has to know how to manage the survey data that has been
inserted into their navigation device. One of the most popular GIS systems today due
to its policy as an open source app for the public is QGIS. QGIS(Quantum GIS) is a
free and open-source cross-platform desktop geographic information system
application that supports viewing, editing, and analysis of geospatial data. Forester
with combination knowledge and skills on GPS, Google Earth and QGIS will become a
good navigator and excellent Forester. This practice will focus on four important
devices/apps/platforms for navigation and survey, such as Garmin Handheld GPS,
Locus Map Android Apps, Google Earth and QGIS.

3.0 OBJECTIVES

There are several objective in this lab which are to provide students with the
knowledge and skills on how to find a digital map or satellite image using geo-
browser as well as knowledge and skills on managing tracks and points that have
been recorded in GPS devices (Smart Phone or Handheld GPS) in any Geographic
INformation System (GIS) flatform. Other than that, to provide students how to
manage the survey data that has been inserted into their navigation device.

4.0 SKILL LEARNED

4.1 Transferable skills
- point marking on Locus Map Application
- track marking on Locus Map Application
- Transferring the file from Locus Map Application to QGIS

4.2 Equipment/Material
- Locus Map Application
- Google Earth map
- QGIS Application

2
4.3 Methods
1. The area that has some big trees in it was found. This area is
more than 10000 m2(1 ha). The track marking of boundaries
that surround that area are established. This task file of tracking
is named Area Boundary.

2. At least 10 trees in that area are found. The tree's coordinates

are plotted by marking all these trees into the Locus apps. This
task file of points marking are named as Tree Points. The ID
and description of the marked tree are filled. The ID inserted is
the number of tree points such as T1, T2 and so on. In the
description the species name will be of the marked tree. But if
unknown, just put some description of its size and features.

3. The pictures of the trees that have been marked in the Locus
Maps are taken as a reference image of tree points.

4. The data of Boundary Tracks and the Tree Point are sended via
whatsApp or Telegram.

5. The data is stored on the computer as a KMZ File. An

appropriate name is established and the file is saved in the
proper folder.

6. The KMZ data of the boundary track and the tree points are
opened in QGiS layer. That KMZ data is viewed and is saved as
QGiS Project File. The file is named and saved in the proper
folder on the computer.

7. The KMZ data that opened in QGiS layer are screenshotted and
are attached in the report.

8. All members will do the same steps from step 1 to step 7 and
the data from each member will be combined into the Group's
Practical Report.

5.0 CONCLUSION
In conclusion, the objectives are achieved. We have knowledge and skills on how to
find a digital map or satellite image using geo-browser as well as knowledge and
skills on managing tracks and points that have been recorded in GPS devices (Smart
Phone or Handheld GPS) in any Geographic Information System (GIS) flatform.
Other than that, we also know how to manage the survey data that has been
inserted into their navigation device. There are errors that we faced during the task
which are that the locus map sometimes fails to detect the track and the position of
the tree is not accurate (+/- 1m).
