Define who you

are.
Do you want to be an agency, or do you
want to be a freelancer?

● No wrong answer!
● Impacts the reviews you want to
get.
● Impacts how you structure your
site and potentially how you look
for clients.

Getting your first jobs

● Friends and family (friends of friends, friends of family!)
● Nothing is beneath your dignity
● Don’t be afraid to work for free or at cost in the beginning
● Don’t pretend to be someone you’re not; honesty and transparency will get you furthest fastest.
● How do you make the offer?
○ “I’m building my career as a [freelancer / agency]. I’m going to be helping online companies with [service]. I
know a lot about what I do, but in order to find clients, I need a portfolio of reviews and projects, just like
getting into design school. I know you’re a [profession], and was hoping I can help you with a website /
campaign / ad concept] in exchange for a positive review I can post on my site / social media pages.
● Ask for referrals, and be specific
● Be willing to do anything peripherally related to your ideal “core” service
● Don’t overthink or over analyze, just get to work.
● Overdeliver, even for the “free” clients. You will learn a lot, and it will show in the feedback you
receive.

Now is the time to think

about case studies!
Begin documenting every project no matter how
small. A good case study isn’t long (or even
important). A good case study shows how you
solved a specific problem.

1. Identify the problem

2. Describe your thought process in
discovering a solution
3. Outline 1-3 specific challenges
4. Describe your solution.

There are so many easy wins! (landing page,

LinkedIn profiles, Yelp, website, Google Ads
campaign, website audit, marketing plan, budget
analysis, etc.)

Keep your case studies

in Google Docs, and post
what you can.
● Post to your own site.
● Post to Facebook, Instagram, Linkedin,
Twitter.
● Show (images and video) instead of tell as
much as possible.
● Build your folder of case studies over time
(you can have multiple case studies for each
client).
● Include reviews in the case studies (if you
have them).

Begin to develop the

specific services you
offer.
● What, exactly do you do?
● Who do you help?
● What do you charge?
● How do you charge?
● What is your timeline?
● How often do you communicate with clients?
● How do you communicate?
● Why should your client hire you?
● What won’t you do for a client?
● What are the prerequisites for taking
someone as a client?

You must be very clear on these things if you want

to start getting business from your site and your
online presence.

Next Lecture:
Professionalism
and Production
Quality
Most sites I’ve seen fall far, far, far
below the minimum threshold for
professionalism and production
value, and you’re turning away your
prospects the moment they step into
the door.

The quality of your website and

online materials makes an enormous
difference.
