• A tangent is a line, line segment, or ray that

intersects a circle at exactly point and

contains points inside the circle.

• is a tangent.

• A central angle is an angle that is inside a circle and has its vertex at the

circle’s center.

• ∠TCV is a central angle.

4 Angle Formed by Two Chords Theorem

Angle formed by two chords theorem: If two chords intersect within a circle,
then the measure of each pair of vertical angles formed is equal to one-half the
sum of the measures of their intercepted arcs.

• These two intersect at a point that’s not on the center.

• They don’t make a angle.

• That point of intersection is also not right on the circle.

• These two chords don’t give us an angle.

• They do give us is a pair of angles.

• 𝑥 and 𝑦 are the measures of the that intercept our

two angles.

4 Finding Angle Measures

REAL-WORLD CONNECTION
From one angle, a two-dimensional view of a beach ball looks like a circle with
two chords intersecting, as shown. What are the measures of each angle?
Angles 1 and 3 are vertical angles, so they are congruent.
C
B
𝑚∠1 = 𝑚∠ °
The two chords theorem tells me that
both of those angles have a measure 2 E
96°
3 1 132°
1
equal to
2
the sum of the measures °4
of the intercepted arcs.
A
1
= (96 + 132) D
2

=
°
Angles 2 and 4 form linear pairs with Angles 1 and 3. Two angles in a linear pair
are supplementary.
𝑚∠2 + 𝑚∠3 = 180°
𝑚∠2 + 114° = 180°

𝑚∠2 = °

10 The Angle Formed by Secants or Tangents Theorem

Angle formed by secants or tangents theorem: The measure of an angle

formed by two secants, two tangents to a circle, or a secant and a tangent that

intersect a circle is equal to half the difference of the measures

x
of the arcs they intercept.

Two intersect at a point that’s

outside the circle to form ∠1.
