- HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT OF PSYCHIATRIC NURSING

The first American Graduate Nurse (First pro fessional psychiatric Nurse) Ms Linda Richard, (1873)
graduated from the New England Hospital for Women and Children’ in Boston. After gradua tion, she
went to England to study Ms Nightingale methods. After returning home, she organized Nursing
services and Nursing educational programmes related to custodial Nursing care at Illinios Hospital.

In 1882, the first Nursing school specifically to prepare the Nurses to care for mentally ill was opened
at McLean hospital, Waverley, Massa chusetts. It was a two year programme, but in it, few
psychological skills were addressed, much importance was given to Custodial Nursing Care (1890-
1930) which is based on Nightingale Sani tary Principles, i.e. cleanliness, personal hygiene, fresh air,
exercise, nutrition, concern, medications,
