A. Background

Education is a conscious and planned effort to create an atmosphere of learning and

learning process so that students can actively develop their potential to have spiritual spiritual
strength, self-control, personality, intelligence, noble character and skills possessed by
themselves, society, nation and country.

. Definition and Function of Education

Education in Greek comes from the word padegogik which is the science of guiding
children. The Romans saw education as educare, that is, issuing and guiding, the act of
realizing the potential of children brought in when they were born in the world. The Germans
see education as Erziehung which is equivalent to educare, namely: generating pent-up
strength or activating children's strength or potential. In Javanese, education means
pelulawentah (processing), processing, changing the psyche, maturing feelings, thoughts,
volition and character, changing the personality of the child.

In education there are two important things, namely cognitive aspects (thinking) and
affective aspects (feeling). As an illustration, when we learn something in it, not only is the
thought process taking part, but there are also elements related to feelings such as enthusiasm,
joy, and so on. The substance of education according to Ki Hajar Dewantara is to liberate
humans and according to Drikarya is to humanize humans. This shows that experts also
assess that education is not merely concerned with cognitive aspects but its scope must be
broader.

B. Progress in Science and Technology

If we pay close attention to the views that have been brought up to the public
regarding the development of science and technology in Indonesia, we can see two basic
expectations, namely:

1. That the science and technology that we develop will be able to serve Indonesian people,
this means that we must prevent the emergence of inhuman science and technology.

2. That the science and technology that we develop in Indonesia will not increase the problem
of unemployment which is already severe enough, on the contrary it can help solve the
unemployment problem.
3. In addition to the two hopes above, another hope regarding the development of science and
technology in Indonesia is that our national efforts in this matter will produce results that are
able to lift the dignity of our nation in intercultural relations, can catch up with our nation
other nationalities.
