INTRODUCTION TO CENSORSHIP:

The next unit we will be looking at is all about CENSORSHIP in particular,

CHALLENGING and BANNING books.
Before we dive into the unit we need to understand what all of this means?? So
let’s start with the section: Who Decides?
Tuning in:
Answer the following questions, without using the internet:
1. What is censorship?
Prohibition or standard of banning books, films, news papers etc that is
published in order to prevent violent or any other inappropriate scene to out
flow and be seen by the audience.
2. What can be censored?
standard of banning books, films, news papers etc that contains inappropriate,
disrupting and sexual scenes .
3. Why does it happen?
to prevent violent or any other inappropriate scene to out flow and be seen by
the audience.

Individually, think about these questions, note down your answers on this
document, then share with a partner.
Note-taking:
Read the following webpagehttp://www.ala.org/bbooks/ from the American
Library Association (copy and paste the link into you google browser) and find
definitions of challenging and banning a literary text (refer to the section titled:
About Banned Books Week). Next, use a dictionary to find a definition for
censorship. Write down your findings on this document under this section.
Challenging a literary text: Challenging a literary text means to test a literary text if
it has inappropriate text in it or not.
Banning a literary text: The prevent public to look at inappropriate text, book,

Go through the attached PPT entitles of Banned Books and figure out why and
how they might have been banned. What are your thoughts on each text/book?
For what reasons might they have been banned? Write your response to these
questions bellow.

For what reasons might they have been banned?
Then, read the webpage and watch the video from How Stuff Works on the
banning of books.
Case study:
“Tango Makes Three”. Watch a short reading of this famous children’s book that
is based on a true story here. In groups of maximum 4 people discuss why this
may be such a frequently banned book.
Looking forward:
When we return from Christmas break we will use the information you have
gathered to create a mock debate in which you will each play a role and discuss
the banning of the book Tango Makes Three in a school.
