BOOK REVEIW
CANNINGS COMPILATIONS - Secrets of Mail Play Revealed on the “Twelve Apostles”

This book covers the 12 new openings added in recent years to the 3 move deck. The IDA has now adopted these
openings and they will be included in future Irish tournaments. Tommy has participated in many mail tournaments
over the years and played for the World Mail Title in 2006 resulting in 24 draws against the current mail play champion
Mac Banks (USA). The play given in this book is of a high calibre throughout and the book itself is well printed with
many diagrams and pictures included. These openings are mostly critical and difficult to draw without prior knowledge,
so the serious 3 move student will find this book indispensable.

Tommy has now issued a new revised edition with a total of 116 pages of play, diagrams and photos.
That’s around an extra 30 pages of new play and quite a few new “cooks” and extended lines etc,
so this new edition is certainly the one to get. Buy it now as this will be the LAST print.
Purchasers may send a personal photo for inclusion in the book if they so wish.
Signed copies are provided at no extra cost. The price of the new edition is 40euro/£30.

INISHOWEN NEWS by Gerald Callaghan

Joe Fullerton moves to pole position

The Richard Hirrell cup appears to be on it’s way to Ballymagan, Buncrana, as Joe Fullerton defied the trend
of the night with an impressive 4 - 0 victory over the experienced Jim McGowan and in the process firmly
stamping his authority at the top of leader board. Joe is now showing all the signs of maturity, hence his
massive improvement in play. Another member of the Fullerton family is also coming of age as Alex added
another 4 points to his tally to dispute 1st place with his superior. In joint 2nd place is Culdaffs Tony Gibbons
and young Kieran Bradley. After a two hour struggle both players finished their encounter with honours even,
but are 3 points adrift of the leaders and therefore have an uphill battle to catch the front runners. Buncrana’s
Sean McGonagle was held to a share of the spoils by Fahan’s David Walker. It is congratulations from all
club members on David’s recent birthday. Redcastle’s Paddy Barr is also in with a chance of a podium place
following his two draws with Buncrana’s Christy Monaghan who recently won the George Devlin Cup.
With just two matches left to play it appears that Ballymagan is still the favourite destination for the Hirrell cup.
A new leader has appeared at the top of the Intermediate “A” section, where Buncrana’s Willie John
McLaughlin toppled Joe Collins from first place following Willie’s 4 - 0 victory over the Carndonagh man.
This was a great result for McLaughlin but he will be under constant pressure for the remaining two weeks of
the competition from a number of his opponents who are breathing down his neck. Another player who is not
out of the reckoning is Redcastle’s Patrick McSheffrey who is just 3 points in arrears following his win over
Kieran McCallion. Drumfries’s Gerard McLaughlin and Dungiven’s Kevin McLaughlin are also up there with
the leaders following their results with Liam Kelly Sr and Eddie McKinney.
This division is also expected to go down to the wire.
In the senior division it is still Moville’s Sean McCauley who is top of the leader board when he finished
all square with Fahan’s Hugh McCarron. Sean is still one point clear of Hugh with John Joe McGee,
Brian Lafferty and Billy Grant just one point further adrift. Billy Grant demolished Colm O’Connor in an
eleven minute blitz which left the Buncrana man in a state of severe shock while Lafferty and McGee shared
the spoils in their encounter. We have four players, Julian McGuinness, Sean Bradley, Liam Kelly Jr and
Gerald Callaghan all in joint 3rd place . There are 10 players who are eligible to collect 1st prize. Therefore
this is the bookies section, but I still think that the result of the McCauley/Grant match will go a long way
in deciding the winner of this Tournament.

ADDING INSULT TO INJURY ! by Jim Somers

Recently the Sunday Times had an article on Rugby by Stephen Jones about Rugby Rules.
He finished up by saying,"Rugby is meant to be a game of chess. Instead it is resembling a game
of draughts". I wouldn't have noticed it but for the fact that it was repeated in very large print in the middle
of the page. The page is page 15 of the sports section. I haven't sent this to anyone; perhaps you would have
a better means of highlighting this ignorant statement, which is an insult to the grand old game.
I wonder how would Jones fare in a game of draughts against some of our players.

NEWS FROM ITALY

The Italian Draughts Federation (FID) held their first championship at English Draughts in Rome
on 18th to 19th April 2009. The winner was Maestro Sergio Scarpetta on 12 points,
one point ahead of Grande Maestro Claudio Clampi.
Grande Maestro Paolo Faleo who represented Italy in Beijing came 5th.
It is rumoured that the Italian Federation may consider hosting an invitational team tournament
in English Draughts later this year.

RATINGS AFTER BEIJING 2008 by Sean Phillips

The World Mind Sport Games in Beijing during October 2008 had a curious effect on the official WCDF ratings of
players. Going into the championship, there were well established ratings for a list of over 400 players, most of whom
had been rated on a number of tournaments. Like all good rating systems, the official WCDF Ratings work best when
they take into account several competitions that a player has entered. There were 42 players taking part in the
championship in Beijing. These players were a curious mixture of the top established players in the WCDF ratings and
of players who had no form that had been measured in previous WCDF ratings. All the debutants in the ratings were
given a standard 1600 rating, which causes no disruption to the list if there are few debutants or if 1600 is reasonably
close to their standard. After all the idea is that players should improve in standard as they play more tournaments.

The problem was that so many of the previously unrated players were well above 1600 standard.
One example was R. Paegle, the Irish based Lativan player, who finished with a Bronze medal.
The 2008 World Mind Sport Games was played over eight rounds. Many established players such as Rawle Allicock,
the British Open Champion, found their rating had dropped after having played a number of rounds against previously
unrated players. The newly rated players were still rated well below their actual form. And many players in the
World’s top 50 actually moved up places in the WCDF list, despite not having played in Beijing.
This is a reminder that, while ratings in general work well over the long term, they can be slow to react to a sudden shock.
And it is also a reminder that ratings are not a measure of current form.
Is it a heresy to suggest that they should be treated as a piece of fun?

Editor’s comment: Yes! The fault lay in allocating such a low default rating of 1600 to unrated players who were
known to be of a much higher standard.
Also, I do not agree with the statement “that ratings are not a measure of current form”. If you perform well above
your expectation, in a tournament, your rating will increase accordingly.

TRANSPOSITION - by Bob Woodlands

From a town in Ireland if you remove a hundred, and place in its stead half that number, strange mark
of forgiveness in the inhabitants, you will only be met with love. Change the fifty to five hundred,
you will see a messenger, which, though a mute one, was once the bearer of joyous intelligence.
Again remove the five hundred for a thousand, and you will have a verb.

Is there a word in the English language that contains all the vowels ?
There is, unquestionably.

Stands to reason: What kind of robbery is not dangerous ? - A safe robbery, of course.
