EDITORIAL
Another very successful Draughts tournament, held on the 21/22 February at the Town House Hotel, Naas.
There were thirty nine players in three sections which was seven more players than last year and a great turnout.
There were 4 players from overseas Colin and Graham Young, Anthony Rose and Michael Igoe.
Nice also to see the return of our two lady competitors from Dublin, Nancy O’Reilly and Angela Campbell.
Results:
In the Masters section Shane Mc Cosker was in top form taking two wins off Myles Hannigan.
Veteran PJ Furey also put in a great performance to finish just one point behind the winner Sean McKenna in
the Seniors. See crosstables overleaf for full details.
Congratulations to Bill Dobbins for arranging such an excellent tournament. This year must be a record
attendance for a weekend event. Thanks to Jim Somers and Peadar Sweeney who were the controllers and they
ensured that all ran smoothly. Cups were presented to the 3winners and plaques to the first 3 in each section.
Cash prizes also were presented to the first 4 in each section.
A special word of thanks is due to Mary Eiliffe, proprietor of the Town House Hotel, for the excellent facilities
and also for providing the playing room free of charge.

BOOK REVEIW
CANNINGS COMPILATIONS - Secrets of Mail Play Revealed on the “Twelve Apostles”
This book covers the 12 new openings added in recent years to the 3 move deck. The IDA has now adopted these
openings and they will be included in future Irish tournaments. Tommy has participated in many mail tournaments
over the years and played for the World Mail Title in 2006 resulting in 24 draws against the current mail play champion
Mac Banks (USA). The play given in this book is of a high calibre throughout and the book itself is well printed with
many diagrams and pictures included. These openings are mostly critical and difficult to draw without prior knowledge,
so the serious 3 move student will find this book indispensable.
Tommy has now issued a new revised edition with a total of 116 pages of play, diagrams and photos.
That’s around an extra 30 pages of new play and quite a few new “cooks” and extended lines etc,
so this new edition is certainly the one to get. Buy it now as this will be the LAST print.
Purchasers may send a personal photo for inclusion in the book if they so wish.
Signed copies are provided at no extra cost. The price of the new edition is 40euro/£30.

RATINGS AFTER BEIJING 2008 by Sean Phillips
The World Mind Sport Games in Beijing during October 2008 had a curious effect on the official WCDF ratings of
players. Going into the championship, there were well established ratings for a list of over 400 players, most of whom
had been rated on a number of tournaments. Like all good rating systems, the official WCDF Ratings work best when
they take into account several competitions that a player has entered. There were 42 players taking part in the
championship in Beijing. These players were a curious mixture of the top established players in the WCDF ratings and
of players who had no form that had been measured in previous WCDF ratings. All the debutants in the ratings were
given a standard 1600 rating, which causes no disruption to the list if there are few debutants or if 1600 is reasonably
close to their standard. After all the idea is that players should improve in standard as they play more tournaments.
The problem was that so many of the previously unrated players were well above 1600 standard.
One example was R. Paegle, the Irish based Lativan player, who finished with a Bronze medal.
The 2008 World Mind Sport Games was played over eight rounds. Many established players such as Rawle Allicock,
the British Open Champion, found their rating had dropped after having played a number of rounds against previously
unrated players. The newly rated players were still rated well below their actual form. And many players in the
World’s top 50 actually moved up places in the WCDF list, despite not having played in Beijing.
This is a reminder that, while ratings in general work well over the long term, they can be slow to react to a sudden shock.
And it is also a reminder that ratings are not a measure of current form.
Is it a heresy to suggest that they should be treated as a piece of fun?
Editor’s comment: Yes! The fault lay in allocating such a low default rating of 1600 to unrated players who were
known to be of a much higher standard.
Also, I do not agree with the statement “that ratings are not a measure of current form”. If you perform well above
your expectation, in a tournament, your rating will increase accordingly.
