TEXTBOOKS

INTRODUCTION:
A book that contains comprehensive
information about a course or subject that
student needs, to get through the
academic year is called textbook. It is the
basic instrument of teaching. A text-book
is a standard book for any branch of study.
Text-books are standardized collection of
the subject matter that has to be taught to
the students. They facilitate the teaching
of new concepts and skills and maintain
the knowledge already acquired and help
the correlation of the theoretical
knowledge with the practical aspects of
life. A text-book continues to be the prime
vehicle of learning.
SIGNIFICANCE OF TEXT-BOOKS

1. The text-books provide suitable


subject matter and guidelines regarding
the syllabus of the subject. So, the teacher
neglects no portion of the syllabus and
does not waste time on relevant details.
2. The text- books help the teacher
planning the lessons, deciding method of
teaching and preparing suitable aids.
3. It provides certain well illustrated
examples about a topic.
4. Text -books are usually written by the
well experienced teachers and subject
experts. A teacher can make use of their
services by making use of their text-books.
5. They provide the students with well
graded exercises for drill, revision and
review.
6. Text-books help in pre-preparation. At
their home, students may get themselves
prepared for studying the next day lesson.
7. Text-books help in doing self-learning,
self-study and helping the students to
acquire the habit of independent learning.
8. Text -books are also quite useful in a
case a student has to remain absent from
class due to one or the other reason.
9. It helps to complete the assigned
home work at home.
10. It helps the pupils to acquire the
required information with speed and
accuracy.
11. Text- book is a probably a cheapest
and reliable source of information.
12. Text -books helps the pupils to gain the
power of understanding and interpreting
fact and ideas given in the book.

CRITICALLY EVALUTION OF STANDARD-


10th MATHS TEXTBOOK:
Physical feature:
The cover page of text-book has graph, pie
diagram, number line. The front page is
printed with different colour and named
as Mathematics Part 1(ALGEBRA) . The
binding of book is not proper. It needs to
be strong for long duration. The printing
of text-book is bold and easily readable
and the paper used in the text-book is of
good quality.
The cover page of text-book is more
appealing and attractive. More diagrams
and colourful information blocks are
given. Some heading of text -book should
be written in bold letter on the top of the
text-book. The binding of the text-book
should be strong and durable. Also, better
quality paper can be used for printing
further.
Author:
The textbook is made with different
qualified, experienced and component
teachers of maths subject committee of
experts constituted by the Maharashtra
state government. It includes Dr. Mangala
Narlikar ,Dr.Jayashri Atre, Shri.Vinayak
Gadbole,Smt .Prajati Gokhale,Shri.
Ramakant Sarode. Other team member
contributed like Shri. Jayashree
Purandere,Shri. Rajender Chaudhari,Shri.
Rama Vanyalkar and many others.
Shri.Sandip Koli cover and illustrations and
Computer drawings.

Content and subject matter:
The text-book is written according to
prescribed syllabus and it includes aims
and objectives of students. Some
instruction for teachers is also given. It has
proper index according to syllabus. The
content present in the textbook include
the recent development like it includes
research, national institution, GST. The
text-book content has some practical and
social utility value. In the text-book two
alternative words are given and also firstly
“Let’s recall” are given for set induction
and revision of previous knowledge they
have. Application questions are asked and
some activity is also given to think it over
and solve. The questions are sub- divided
into practical set . The problem set are
given at the end of topic.
The content presented in text-book
should have more direct and practical
application questions as per the average
pupil. The oral questions should also be
placed more in textbook to clear content.
The content should satisfy the demand of
examination.
Presentation:
The presentation of the content in this
text-book is proper and it has given
alternate methods to solve the problem.
Maxims of teaching is used and it is
presented in proper sequence. First
previous knowledge base questions are
given and then solved examples. The
questions asked in exercise are easy,
moderate and difficult and is based on
different students’ ability.
Organization:
The text-book is not divided into units.
Only different topics are given in the
index. The topic in the textbook relates
the classroom learning to . Various topics
are included in this textbook as it relates
present knowledge with the past and
future. It gives proper knowledge to pupil.
Also reference books are not given in this
textbook. But links for different website
related topics given for more knowledge.
In ending of every lesson, problem set
based on that lesson given and it helps
teacher to know whether pupil
understood the topic or not. It is framed
according to the pupil IQ.
There should be proper division of units
and the content should be organized in
the increasing order of difficulty.
Reference books should be given at the
end of each topic so that student can find
their best methods to solve the doubts
and problem.
Language:
The language used in the text book is
simple and easily understandable. The
textbook used terms and symbols which
are popular. Terms and symbol are used in
textbook as per the universal acceptance.
Language of textbook is within the grasp
of the students. The language written is
simple and understandable. It is easily
readable and correct numbers. The
formulas used in lesson are included
correctly.
Accuracy:
The textbook contains appropriate
pictures, diagrams, figures and also
graphs. The diagrams are printed properly
and it is clearly visible. Some heading is
not in bold. Some words need to highlight
properly. The diagrams used in the
textbook should be easily recognizable
and some figures should be in proper
proportion as per the sums
Adaptability:
The questions asked in the text-book are
of different type like some questions are
easy and some questions are moderate
which is useful for average students. Some
difficult questions or exercises are given to
challenge the gifted students. The
questions are not distributed evenly in
textbook. Only few questions are easy and
difficult. Also important topic questions
are missing.
Miscellaneous:
There are different teaching aids which
can be used while teaching maths.
Different websites are given to get know
more information. One can use diagrams
and various methods and formula to
explain topics easily like linear equation
and statistics , Quadratic equation.

REFLECTION:
Being future teacher explaining any
concept of maths with proper content,
diagram, figures is necessary. It makes
concept clear to pupil easily. I will suggest
that the textbook should be properly bind
so that students can use it for longer
period of time. It helps pupil to have clear
idea about syllabus for their current area.
Interaction between teacher and pupil is
must when question and answers is asked.
I have done this assignment as I got to
learn how to critically analysis the
textbook. Also, I have learned
characteristic of good text book that made
it little easy to analysed the text book. The
textbook should be of moderately priced
and readily available in the market.
