Overview: This 5E lesson plan provides opportunities for students to engage, explore, explain,
elaborate, and evaluate their understanding of paragraph writing over the course of two weeks.
The plan includes a variety of activities to keep students engaged and motivated while learning
about this important aspect of writing.

Objectives: By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

 Identify the key components of a paragraph.

 Develop clear and concise topic sentences.
 Organize ideas logically and in chronological or special order
 Use evidence and examples to support their arguments
 Revise and edit their own writing

Procedure/Activities

Week1:

Engage:

Students will be asked to brainstorm what they know about paragraphs. What is a paragraph?
What is its purpose? How are paragraphs organized?

Explore:

Students will read a paragraph in a newspaper or magazine article and identify the topic
sentence, supporting details, and concluding sentence. In pairs or small groups, they will share
and discuss their findings. The teacher will guide this activity and provide assistance to each
group or pairing.
Explain:

Students will be given notes on the structure of a paragraph, including the importance of a topic
sentence and supporting details. Examples will be used to demonstrate how to structure a well-
written paragraph.

Elaborate:

Students will practice writing paragraphs with clear topic sentences and supporting details. The
teacher will provide a prompt for students to write about, or allow them to choose their own
topic.

Evaluate:

Students will peer-review each other's paragraphs and provide constructive feedback on the
effectiveness of the topic sentence and supporting details. The teacher will ask leading questions
in order to guide the peer-review, but the activity will be led by the students for the most part

Week 2:

Engage:

Students and teacher will discuss the importance of transitions in paragraphs. The teacher will
provide examples of transition words and phrases and discuss how they can be used to link ideas.

Explore:

Students will read a paragraph with poor transitions and discuss, with the teacher, how the lack
of transitions affects the flow of the paragraph. In pairs or small groups, students will rewrite the
paragraph with better transitions as suggested in the discussion.

Explain:

Students will copy notes on the different types of transitions and how to use them effectively in
writing. Afterwards, there will be a discussion on the content of the notes.
Elaborate:

Students will practice using different types of transitions in their writing. The teacher will
provide a prompt for students to write about, or allow them to choose their own topic.

Evaluate: Students will complete a summative assessment where they write a well-structured
paragraph with clear topic sentences, supporting details, and effective transitions.
