Poetry was one of the most popular genres of Victorian period In Victorian England,
renowned poets included Robert Browning (1812–1889) and Alfred Tennyson (1809–
1892). Although Thomas Hardy composed poetry throughout his life, a collection
was not published until 1898. Gerard Manley Hopkins' (1844–1889) poems was
released in 1918. Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837–1909) is also regarded as a
significant literary figure of the time, particularly for his poetry and critical essays.
Yeats' early poems was also published during Victoria's reign. Any notable theatrical
works were not produced until the late nineteenth century, beginning with Gilbert and
Sullivan's (1870s) operas, George Bernard Shaw's (1856–1950) plays of the 1890s,
and Oscar Wilde's (1854–1900) The Importance of Being Earnest were literary works
of Victorian period written by famous Victorian's writers. .in Victorian period the
literary techniques which were prominent were imagery symbolism. They used
autobiography, novels were being introduced that detective, fantasy, melodrama,
sonnet, gothic, sensation novel, women fiction writers and bibliography new women
novel. they used realism, writing, satire, Victorian long poems were also introduced in
this period. In romantic period there was an artistic and literary movement started in
18 centuries. Romantic poets appreciated nature and its beauty whereas Victorian
poets regarded nature in a more realistic view and considered it as less ideal.
romantics used themes of farmers, pastorals and supernaturalism was also key of
romantic period whereas in Victorian period used medieval myths and legends as well
as real life issues which were been prominent in their writing have been shown there.
There was also a sharp conflict between science and religion in Victorian period.
Victorians used their individual thought and intellect more serious, and romantics
considered emotions, imaginations as their key. The Victorian Poets wrote on a
variety of topics and issues, which is why Victorian Poetry must be examined by
distinguishing the Victorian Poets from the Pre-Victorian While Tennyson, Browning,
and Arnold led Victorian Poetry from the front, the Pre-Victorian Brotherhood is
thought to have been founded by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, his sister Christina Georgina
Rossetti, and A.C. Swinburne. The primary distinction between these two groups of
poets is found in their choice of style and poetry. The Pre-Victorian emphasized the
link between poetry and art. As a result, the structure, rhyme, and duration of
Victorian poetry vary from poet to poet. They showed responsibility, use of sensory
elements, and there were increase in fables and legends. tree more focus was on
realism and the circumstance prevailing in the society.
