Intonation is a complex system of meaning communicated through the rise and fall o a

speakers voice .In linguistics intonation is a variation in spoken pitch when use not for
distinguishing words sememes ,but rather for a range ,of other function such as
indicating the attitudes and emotions of the speaker ,signalling the differences
between statements and questions , and differences between types of question
.focusing attention on important elements of the spoken message and also helping to
regulate conventional interaction. Example is the way your voice raises in pitch at the
end of a question. For example we take sentence, “when does the meeting starts ?
The word “start _including the question mark _rises up or comes up in your voice
when you utter the word .
There are two basics patterns of intonation :
Rising intonation:
Rising intonation means the pitch of the voice rise over time .falling intonation mean that the pitch
falls with time. Dipping or fall rise intonation and then rises. Peaking or rise fall intonation rises and
then fall. We use rising intonation on a statement in order to signal that we are asking the
statement as a question. We use rising intonation when’d like to check or confirm something we use
rising intonation uncertainty or doubt.
It can be used while making general question

Statement:

She is 10 years \OLD

He doesn’t have a \CAR

Falling intonation:

Falling intonation describe how the voice fall on the final stressed syllable of
a phrase of a group of words . A final intonation is very common in wh-questions . ….we also used
falling intonation when we say something definite ,or when we want to be very clear about
something .WE use falling intonation when we are giving information or giving observation . we use
falling intonation when we are asking information question .(This distinguishes them for yes /no
question ,which you can learn about in Rising intonation in American English .

Example:

Fall rise intonation:

Fall rise intonation describes how the voice falls and then rises .we use fall –rise
intonation sat the end of statement when we want to say that we are not sure ,or when we may
have more add.

This tone shows limited agreement ,response we reservation , uncertaintly or doubt
