Managing Organisational Change

Welcome to Managing Organisational Change. We are excited to be working with you this
coming semester. Amongst the teaching team are experienced academics and practitioners
active in the field of organisational change, and UWE Bristol is the home of the Bristol
Leadership and Change Centre. You are in good company!

What to do next
The first thing to do is to get familiar with all the resources that are available – so that you at
least know what is there when you need it. There are several folders on the left-hand side of
the module Blackboard page:
Announcements: The staff team will provide occasional guidance and/or information.
Module Information and Overview: A range of useful resources, including the Module
Handbook.
Study Units: This is the main place to find the resources to help your study each week.
During the Starting Block (w/c 04 October) you need to work through the materials in SU00
– ‘Getting started’. Each week you will then work on one study unit at a time.
Reading List: The Reading List is designed to map on to each study unit - the case study for
each study unit should be downloaded from here so you can prepare for your seminars.
There is one core reading attached to each study unit and two further readings. All the links
within the reading list direct to online access.
Assignment: The task briefing and guidance document with a range of resources to help you
do well in the assignment (e.g. how to do case study analysis – and more to follow as the
term progresses).
Teaching team: You can find contact details for all module staff here.
Online meeting rooms: Online meeting rooms for pre-booked appointments are here for
you to meet with your Module Leader/s. Also, online seminar rooms are prepared here in
the event that seminars need to be transferred online - we really hope they will not!

Exploring the individual study units

The next thing to do is to explore the study units themselves – so that you know what to
expect and get a sense how (a) how best to prepare and (b) how to schedule the different
study activities. There are a wide range of materials that have been organised in each study
unit to support you in managing your own learning. Within each study unit you will find Key
messages, suggestions of Things to look out for, and occasional Reminders. Notice how each
study unit divides your study into Lectorial, Seminar, and offers some Additional module
materials which are important for individual and small group study. You get a reminder for
sessions where preparation is required. Although the learning you will undertake has
potential impact on your future careers, we include a series of 10-minute videos each week
as a Step-by-step guide to completing your assignment.
You will find that each of the 11 Study Units follows a similar format and guides you through
a series of self-study activities. Each week, you will attend a lectorial which supported by a
range of materials. You will also review some readings and multimedia resources, and
prepare for your seminar which will often be structured around a case study.

Each Study Unit is structured in the same way with the following sections:
Welcome to SUXX: this sets out Key messages, Things to look out for, and Reminders
Lectorial: here are the materials for before and after your Lectorial - preparation is not
required for lectorials. Each study unit begins with a lectorial which is supported by some
online materials. Along with other preparation work, you should ensure that you have
attended the Lectorial in order to make the most of the seminar for that Study Unit. Make
sure that you make a note of the time of your weekly lectorial.
Seminar: here are the materials for your Seminar - note that preparation is required for
seminars. Each week you will attend a two-hour seminar in which you will play an active
part in working on case studies of organisational change management. Initially, your tutor
will lead the seminar and set up small groups and activities. They are there to, support your
learning and answer questions about the module and the assignment. During the seminar,
small groups will often take it in turns to lead on presenting their prepared case analysis. As
the semester progresses, you will take more and more responsibility for the seminar. Make
sure that you make a note of the time of your weekly seminar.
Additional module materials: here you are reminded about the Academic materials, Other
materials to help develop your understanding, and the Step-by-step guide to completing
your assignment.

Your Seminar Tutors & Module Leaders

Your seminar tutors are your first point of contact if you have any queries and concerns. You
can find their email addresses in the Teaching team area (LH menu).
As module leaders, we are also available to respond to any queries that your seminar tutor
cannot answer. We really hope you enjoy the module!
