What is Slavery?

● When an individual is treated as property to another person.


● Lasted until 1865
● Became an infamous atrocity in american history.
● One of the main factors in building the United States of America
● The effects are still felt to this day with events such as the Civil
Rights Movement and Black Lives Matter
Who were affected?

● The ones affected were groups of africans who were kidnapped from
their land and taken to a whole new world of pain and trauma.
● Families were split apart as members were sold to different slave
masters.
● Loved ones were forbidden to marry. (Williams)
● Introduced the idea of demonization when it comes to black people
that was influenced in portrayals and metaphorical imagery that
convey savagery aimed towards black people.

Racial Implications that affect African Americans
Significance

● Slavery helped create millionaires that made up the Mississippi River


Valley.(Timmons)
● The south became an economic highspot with cash crops such as
tobacco, cotton and sugarcane.
● The idea of profit became big in the economic climate as slavery was
marketed as a common delicacy in America as opposed to the barabic
lifestyle it actually was.

What was the Civil War?

● A war that fought on the status of slavery between the north and the
south.
● Spanned from 1861-1865
● Has become one of the most talked about human conflicts in
american history.
NORTH
● Strived in manufacturing and
railroads
● Did not support slavery
● Viewed slavery as
unconstitutional
SOUTH
● Hub for the agriculture industry
● Viewed slavery as a necessity
● Lowered the tariff of goods
imported into the south.
The election of Abraham Lincoln

● The south believed that Abraham Lincoln was more favored in the
north, due to his anti slavery agenda and became paranoid at the idea
of a high ranking political figure, is in allegiance with the North.
● Many people view the Civil War, as just the disagreement of slavery,
but the election of Abraham Lincoln was pivotal in drawing the line
causing the Civil War to erupt in chaos.
Significance

● Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation which


declared the slaves free from slavery. (The White House)
● Since the South lost is hot commodity, it caused conflict with the
north that made it difficult to become united and the civil war almost
caused the collapse of the United States of America.
