The 2022
Excellence in Africentric Education & Research

African Nova Scotian

History Challenges
Entries accepted from December 1, 2021 to February 18, 2022
Awards include bursaries totalling $3,000.00, prizes and gifts.
The African Nova Scotian History Challenges and Awards are an initiative of the Delmore “Buddy”
Daye Learning Institute (DBDLI) and various partners in education from across the province. The goal
of the Challenges is to encourage discussion about African Nova Scotian history, heritage, and culture.
All students and teachers display their knowledge gained through creative and innovative submissions.
For the 2021 Challenges, we were pleased to have received more than 4,000 entries from 82 different
schools. The Awards recognition ceremony was celebrated virtually with a message from the
Lieutenant Governor, and the winning schools were announced by the Minister of Education and
Early Childhood Development. We were pleased to also have other special guests in attendance
for the virtual event to celebrate our winners. Please feel free to view last year’s ceremony here.
This year, the African Nova Scotian History Challenges will be delivered and celebrated
using a hybrid model. The Challenge options will continue to engage and involve students
by inspiring both historical curiosity and artistic creativity. A diverse array of mediums
enables students of all grade levels to participate.
I invite all students and teachers to participate in the African Nova Scotian History Challenges
and I look forward to greeting you at the DBDLI Awards ceremony in Spring 2022.
Let’s celebrate and educate year-round.
Sylvia Parris-Drummond, CEO
Delmore “Buddy” Daye Learning Institute
Excellence in Africentric Education & Research

The DBDLI top School Awards are traditionally presented by the Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia.
Pictured above (left to right) are DBDLI Board member and Chair, Randy Headley, the Honourable Arthur LeBlanc, community
advocate and Preston MLA, Angela Simmonds, Her Honour Rosemary Patricia (Patsy) LeBlanc and Board member Gilbert Daye.

The DBDLI Awards for Excellence in African Nova Scotian History are presented to students
whose submissions to the Challenges best exemplify the contributions African Nova Scotians have
made to the history, heritage, and culture of our province and our country. Bursaries totaling $3,000,
gifts, and prizes will be presented to the recipients at an awards ceremony in the Spring.

History Challenges 2022
Rules and Regulations
The DBDLI Awards for Excellence in African Nova Scotian History are presented to students
whose submissions best exemplify the contributions African Nova Scotians have made to the history,
heritage, and culture of our province, and our country.
• The African Nova Scotian History Challenges are open to all students, classes, and schools across
Nova Scotia.
• Submissions will be accepted from December 1, 2021 to February 18, 2022.
• All awards include cash bursaries.
• All requested information must be filled out in the registration form to be included in the judging process.
• The judge’s decisions will be deemed final.
• Judges will consider content, grade level, creativity, and presentation when evaluating each submission.
Please review our criteria to gain a better understanding of the judging process.
• Prizes will be awarded by category: high school (Grades 10-12); junior high (Grades 7-9); and
elementary (P-6).
• Submissions post marked or delivered after the deadline will not be considered.
• Teachers may submit one class entry only.
• Submissions will not be returned unless accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope.
• Only award winners will be contacted.
• A complete list of award winners will be published on our website (dbdli.ca).
Please mail or deliver your entries from December 1, 2021 to February 18, 2022 to:
The African Nova Scotian History Challenges
Delmore “Buddy” Daye Learning Institute
5450 Cornwallis Street, Halifax, NS B3K 1A9
Please be sure to include your registration form with your submission(s).

New This Year!

We greatly appreciate the effort that goes into packaging submissions and mailing them or dropping
them off to the Delmore “Buddy” Daye Learning Institute in Halifax, NS. We also hope to create an
exhibit of work for your friends, family, and the general public to view once the submission deadline
has passed in the coming year, so having the actual submissions in hand is always ideal to not only be
included in an exhibit, but to also make sure we are getting the full effect of a student’s work.
But we also understand that mailing submissions or dropping them off at the Delmore “Buddy” Daye
Learning Institute may not be possible for all those who wish to participate in the African Nova Scotian
History Challenges. That is why this year we are offering an option to send your submission(s) in virtu-
ally. If you are unable to attach your project to the Google registration form provided, then please contact
us at historychallenges@dbdli.ca to find out more.

CHALLENGE Breaking News! Class/Group Project
You are the reporting team sent to cover breaking news. Produce and submit a
video news report, 3 to 5 minutes long, about one of the following significant
historical events. Be sure to cover the basic reporter’s questions of who, what,
where, when and why. Why is the event significant? What is the aftermath? If
working in a group, include interviews and eye-witness accounts with your report.

Eddie Carvery began the longest political protest in
Canadian history when he set up his protest camp at
Africville in 1970. He maintains his protest camp at
Africville where he gladly shares the history of his former

• Residents of East Preston, North Preston, Cherry Brook, and

Lake Loon are fighting to receive clear titles to their land. This
issue dates back to the 18th century, when Black settlers arrived
in Nova Scotia and were not given legal title to their land.
Angela Simmonds and other community members are working
together to change this 200-year-old historical injustice.

Senator/Activist/Author

• Calvin Ruck just found out that his son was denied service
at a barber shop in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. The barber says
he refuses to cut Black people’s hair. Calvin has called out
the barber for racial discrimination and is calling on the help
Calvin Woodrow Ruck, C.M. of the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission to right this
wrong.

CHALLENGE Notable Nova Scotians: Past and Present
African Nova Scotians have made important contributions to the political,
social, and cultural life of our communities, our province, and our country.
A new generation of movers and shakers have started to rise up and take
the torch from those who were saying “Black Lives Matter” many decades
before. Select one of the following Notable Nova Scotians and choose an
individual who is continuing their work today. Write a short essay or record
a video telling us how the two are similar and what they are doing to make a
difference in the world today.
