Woodlawn: A Tour of our African Countries

This year our experience at Woodlawn Community School has been extremely insightful, educational, and inspirational. We have truly felt welcome and would like to extend our gratitude to the school for taking us on. As our time at Woodlawn is coming to a close, we ask your help in executing our final contribution to the school. On April 21 st we want to celebrate the African culture that makes this community truly unique. Each classroom represents an important country and we would like to celebrate each nation through a tour of presentations completed by each classroom. These presentations are intended to give the school community a sense of what is important to the country represented; allowing both the students from the presenting classroom and the entire school to reflect on what makes Woodlawn special. We are asking for your help by preparing your students for the tour and creating presentations with your classroom. We know that you are extremely busy teachers, and to make this tour a success we want to help in every way we can. Below is a list of presentation ideas we have compiled to help you get started for this event. This list is by no means comprehensive, and we welcome any ideas you have to make this day a success. Thank you, once again, for your help, your guidance, and your time as we make our final contribution to Woodlawn Community School. Presentation Ideas: Live retelling ofa story/folktale unique to classroom's country Cooking/baking of foods with history of recipe shared Creating cultural dress Performance of cultural dance Learning and sharing language of country Presenting a tradition or game played by children Creation of visual art piece Musical performance Reproduction of artifacts The sky's the limit! To accompany the presentations, we are asking that each classroom create a brief poster displaying some of the cultural universals of each country. To help "tourists" develop a general understanding of the countries of Woodlawn we ask each poster include the following information: Location-capital city National Flag Population Language Dress Unique cultural traditions Interesting facts/issues

Thanks again and we will talk more about this at the next staff meetit1' Ms. K., Ms. Craik, and Ms. Howlett
