Section 1 Summarising
Using context to understand words
Read the sentences below and try to work out what the underlined words mean. For each one,
write down your own definition and explain how the rest of the sentence helped you work out
the meanings.
The woman, who always walked around the small lake at lunchtime, continued to
perambulate even as the rain grew more intense.
Perambulate meaning is to travel leisurely, especially on foot. The rest of the sentence helped
me because there are clues such as walked around the small lake at lunch time, which gave
me the idea of perambulate.
At the age of 12, this precocious boy was playing cricket in the under-21 team.
The meaning of precocious is exceptionally early in development or occurrence, precocious
is having an early development such as abilities, skills that others at the same age don’t have.
The rest of the sentence helped me understand the meaning of precocious because at the age
of 12 he already started playing cricket with the under-21. He has an early development that
made him play with the under-21 team.
There was no sign of a burglary, but the necklace had vanished from the safe. The police
were completely flummoxed.
Flummoxed is like confused, perplexed, or baffled. The rest of the sentence helped me
understand the meaning of flummoxed because there was no sign of burglary and the
necklace had vanished from the safe, which gave me an idea that the police were completely
confused or baffled.

Identifying and linking key ideas

Answer the following questions based on the text entitled “The Great Gold Robbery”
The extract describes the route along which three boxes travelled. Note down the four stages
of that journey.
Burglaries were happening frequently in the 1940s 1950sOn 15th May the gold was
taken from the London Bridge by train to Paris. The safes were locked which would make it
hard for the Burglar to steal the gold. At 7:40 pm of the same day, the sealed boxes were then
delivered to the London Bridge by Mr Chaplin then locked inside a company’s safe. It arrived
at Folkestone, the boxes were removed from the train and carried onto the Lord Warden, and
with a steam ship to Paris. In Boulogne, the boxes were weighed so it can be checked
whether it was still there or not. They were then transported to Paris and then weighed again.
They found the same weight as the weight in Boulogne, they then opened it. What's
surprising was that it was all filled with lead shots.
At what point in the journey did someone realise that the gold has been stolen?
It was when it was put into a safes, but when it was weighed it was lighter than expected
before. It made them realise that the gold had been stolen.

Note down all of the security measures taken to stop the gold from being stolen.
It was put inside a safes, it was placed inside a guard’s van at the rear of the train, it
was transported by different transportations to different places. To open it, it requires two
keys and is kept by different railway employees to open the safe. It was also weighed to
check if it was still inside.
Write a chronological account of the story “The Great Gold Robbery” noting down the key
information about what happened and when it happened.
