Maptek Scanner Operator Manual - XR3

Overview
This manual describes the features and functionality of the Maptek third
generation XR3 laser scanners, including other accompanying equipment
and accessories.
The scanner is part of a system which can scan and measure a 3D
environment, delivering accurate 3D models useful in determining
production data for the mining industry and other allied applications. The
scanner is optimised for use in large scale environments, with a maximum
scanning range of 2400 m.
Maptek scanners are advanced measurement laser scanners comprising
several electro-optical sensing systems (active and passive), and
associated control and data acquisition systems. The scanner data
creates a 3D model of the surrounding environment which can be used for
detailed 3D surface measurements in topographic, mining and general
surveying work.
The scanner includes an internal compass and internal GPS antenna.
Configuration options include an internal camera and inbuilt telescope.
The scanner can be operated via a computer tablet called the ‘Controller’,
a mobile device, or scan in a stand-alone mode. It can be mounted on a
tripod or attached to a vehicle. Additional attachments include various
supporting mounts, while third party equipment like external GPS antennas
can also interface with the system. For scanners used in cold climates
there is an option to upgrade to a M20 which includes a specialized built in
circuitry and a Neoprene jacket to eliminate components from freezing and
minimizing down time.

Warning: Do not open the product. There are no serviceable parts within
the scanner. Only Maptek authorised service workshops are authorised to
align, calibrate or repair the product. Opening the product will void the

New features
Scan speed and range
The scanners have the capability of scanning at different speeds. The data
is collected in a pattern made up of horizontal and vertical passes. The
actual rate of data collected can vary and is a function of the scanner
speed and the time it takes to move through the horizontal and vertical
passes covering the areas required.

The scanner is capable of scanning at these speeds:

· Normal - 50 kHz
· Fast - 100 kHz
· Rapid - 200 kHz

However, as scanning speed increases, the effective range at that speed

decreases.

For example, Rapid Scan option acquires data in approximately half the
time compared with the Fast scan speed setting. However, the Rapid
Scan speed results in a shorter maximum range. For longer range scans,
Fast scan speed will be required.

CAUTION: SURVEY PRISMS can damage scanner

DO NOT scan Survey Prisms that are closer than 100 metres. This
includes Survey Prisms in the target area and Survey Prisms in the
areas vertically above and below your target area, as the scanner beam
continues through these regions.

» Refer to Controller software instructions for using these

features.
» Refer to Appendix 2 for a graph detailing variation in
maximum range versus reflectivity of surface objects.

8
Maptek Scanner Operator Manual - XR3

Scan point selection

Scans may produce multiple reflections as the laser reflects off different
surfaces on various objects during its flight. The laser might encounter dust
clouds and insect swarms, as well as a variety of vegetation before hitting
solid ground or metal objects. This results in multiple return signals with
varying intensity, depending on the material encountered.

The range returned can now be selected from options according to the
First, Best, Last or All points detected along each scan path.

· Best uses an intelligent algorithm that generally is successful in

choosing the strongest returned point. This option is equivalent
to previous generations of scanners.
· First gives a preference to the first or closest points returned and
therefore is good for getting points off a reflective surface.
· Last gives a preference for the last returned point and is
therefore good for picking up points through foliage or light dust
or snow.
· All saves all return points that are detected by the scanning
beam. Note: This option may result in heavy data loads that will
fill data space quickly. Use only if necessary.

Note: The Best setting is recommended for most applications. Other

settings may be used if they have been found to be useful in particular
circumstances.

Point Selection options - from m ultiple reflections.

» Refer to Controller software instructions for using these

features.

9
Maptek Scanner Operator Manual - XR3

Mobile Device Mode

The scanner is now capable of being controlled by a mobile device, such
as a mobile phone, etc. This is additional to the capability of performing
stand-alone scans or using the Controller tablet for total control of scanner
functions. This new functionality allows quicker and easier access to the
main scanning settings without the need to operate the Controller tablet.
Details are provided under Scanner Operating Modes in the Scanner
Operation chapter.

Note: Mobile Device Mode capability in the scanner accompanies

Controller software version G3 3.0 or higher.

M20 Cold climate option

New Maptek XR3 Cold Climate laser scanner allows the user continuous
operating time at cold temperatures. The scanner will be able to work
continuously in temperatures down to -20°C from an upper limit of +50°C. It
will support the new Sentry DMS M20 system, standalone scanning for
survey and geological mapping, the stop-go vehicle mount and Drive
systems in colder climates.

System modifications include the addition of a new control program,

heating element and removable, external neoprene jacket. The scanner
must be used with the jacket in place to gain the full benefit of the system
in the colder temperatures. The jacket is easily removed when not required.

The XR3 M20 system is designed for connection to external power through
the external power connector as used in vehicle mounts, Drive and Sentry
systems. The heater will only be switched on when the system
temperature drops below the set point.

For survey and mapping work the XR3 M20 system may be used in
temperatures below -20°C for a period of time under controlled conditions.
The scanner will operate on a vehicle mount down to -40°C for up to 8
hours if it is:
1. Taken from an ambient environment of 20°C.
2. Installed onto the vehicle wearing the Neoprene jacket.
3. Plugged in and not battery powered.

Controller

Controller scanning
The scanner can be operated wirelessly by the Controller using Wi-Fi, or
it can be connected via an Ethernet cable. The Controller, a Panasonic
Toughpad, is a ruggedised, compact, tablet style computer which operates
Maptek’s proprietary software for scanner control and data acquisition. It
utilises a colour GUI (graphical user interface) and a digitiser pen (stylus)
to input information. The anti-reflective, anti-glare LED screen is suitable for
outdoor viewing.

The Controller can input scan acquisition parameters, record scan data
files collected from the scanner and view acquired scans. It also displays
diagnostic information about the scanner. Scan data is transferred from the
Controller to a computer using a USB flash memory drive.

Do not use the Controller for any purpose other than operating the
scanner. Using software, LAN cards or modems that are not provided to
work with the Controller can corrupt the settings on your computer, and
can adversely affect system performance.

Precautions: The Controller does not have virus protection so the

workstation used to analyse scans must be kept up to date with virus
protection software. Infection of the Controller through the USB flash
memory drive may result in the Controller failing to operate effectively.

The Warranty does not cover computer failures due to unauthorised

software or virus infection.

15
Maptek Scanner Operator Manual - XR3

Precautions: Only use the digitiser pen attached to the Controller. Newer
systems may also offer finger tip control.

Precautions: The tip of the digitiser pen is equipped with a sensor.

Continued applied pressure to the tip may result in its malfunction or
degradation. Make sure excessive pressure is not applied to the tip when
storing the digitiser pen.

The following diagram displays how the Controller connects to various

devices and transfers information as part of the scanning system.

Wi-Fi Range

The pick-up range for Wi-Fi communications between the scanner and the
Controller varies around the scanner according to distance from the
antenna, which is built into the left handle, and the orientation of the
Controller with respect to the scanner.

The maximum range of just over 50 metres is possible when the

Controller is directly facing the scanner antenna and on the side of the
antenna. The worst case reception occurs when the Controller is facing
away from the scanner (and antenna), on the opposite side of the scanner
with respect to the antenna handle. This case only gives approximately 5
metres Wi-Fi operating range.

Note: The Wi-Fi range figures are a guide only and certain local factors at
a site may cause these estimates to vary.

Note: The Wi-Fi system is sensitive to certain types of RF interference. If

persistent problems occur and/or warning messages are displayed, use
the Ethernet connection instead.

23
Maptek Scanner Operator Manual - XR3

Baseline scan
When receiving your scanner, it is advisable to take a baseline scan. This
scan can be used as a benchmark for future referencing of the correct
operation of the system. This enables the scanner to be checked to ensure
it is within the desired operational parameters.

For the best results, it is advisable to choose an area that will not change
over time. A workshop or office environment with fixed buildings and
structures surrounding the setup position is ideal. If this is not possible,
then capture a scene from two known locations. Take a scan of the area
from each location using the highest resolution available. Register the
scans in the accompanying software and perform a visual inspection,
ensuring good matching of common features exists.

The intention of the scan is to provide a baseline for comparison in case

the scanner is exposed to any mishaps, such as being dropped or extreme
operating conditions.

» Refer to the next sections on Scanner Operation and

Controller software instructions on how to carry out the
Baseline scan.

Packing
Packing is the reverse of unpacking. Remove the battery and place in the
battery compartment, for an M20 scanner remove the Neoprene Jacket,
replace the scanner by grasping the lower handles and gently lower into
case. Place the Neoprene Jacket and Controller in the shoulder carry
case. Accessories can be packed in the cardboard shelf provided.

Scanner head controls

The control knobs on the scanner head have multi-positional control.

For scanners with a telescope installed, the scanner head will include a
telescope eyepiece and focus knob for focusing the telescope.

Turning the azimuth knob gently will increment the head at .001 degrees
at a time. As the knob is rotated faster, the head follows at a faster rate,
allowing coarse and fine adjustment. Spinning the knob half a turn quickly
will increment the head at about 45 degrees per second.

The elevation knob will increase or decrease at speeds dependent on the

rate the knob is turned.

Caution: Never manually force azimuth rotation of the scanner head.

26
Maptek Scanner Operator Manual - XR3

Scanner data file format

Scan naming convention
The scan file naming convention uses letters and numbers which help to
indicate information such as time and scanner settings used.
The date, time, location and/or backsight name may appear depending on
which scan setup is used.
The letters include (C) for a combined scan (laser distance measurement
and photo capture – only available for scanner models C and CT) or range
only (R – only the distance measurement returned by the laser) and the
next number indicates the scan resolution setting.
The scanner angle is also indicated by level (L) - within 5 degrees of
horizontal, or not level (U) - greater than 5 degrees.
These files also vary slightly according to the type of file or method of
scanning employed.
Generally, the scan name follows these guidelines:

Scan_(SP)(CR)(PD)(LU)(PS)_(IN).r3s

or
date_time_(CR)(PD)(LU)(PS)_(IN).r3s

Where:

Scan: Scan job name

date_time: Date and time when scan started
(SP): Scan speed setting (1x, 2x, or 4x); 1x = 50 kHz, 2x = 100 kHz, 4x
= 200 kHz,
(CR): Combined range & photographic (C) requires Camera configuration
options, or Range distance only (R).

27
Maptek Scanner Operator Manual - XR3

(PD): Point density (½,1,2,4,8,16). Higher point densities represent more

points scanned over an area.
(LU): Scanner is level within five degrees (L); if not level (U)
(PS): Point selection: First (-F), Best (-B), Last (-L), All (-A)
(IN): Increment – incremented number to identify scan (may not be
present if date & time uniquely identify the scan).
.r3s: Scan file extension

Examples:
20-Mar-2018_14-55_2xR2L-B.r3s
Scan_2xR4L-L_08.r3s
scan02_st01_compass_2xC8U-F_24.r3s

Note: Depending on scanner type and options, not all settings shown
above may be available.

Scanner general procedures

These instructions give a general guideline regarding the setup and use of
a scanner in some generic applications. Contact Maptek if you have
questions about more specialised applications.

Overlap
It is important to provide sufficient overlap between scans to ensure the
registration algorithm runs correctly. Ensure good data overlap between
scans of at least 30% of the total scan.

Survey Prisms
Survey Prisms may be used at a scan site as they are very efficient at
reflecting light waves back to the measurement device. However, Maptek
scanners are capable of detecting return signals without the need for
Survey Prisms. In fact, Survey Prisms that are close to the scanner may
return signals that are too strong for the receiver sensor in the scanner.

LASER FIRING INDICATION & CAUTION

The scanner ON/OFF button/light will flash red or display a constant red
light when the main laser is firing during the following phases:

§ Warm-up and levelling

§ Preview (only for a scanner without camera installed)
§ Scanning

Read the appropriate Appendices for detailed information about more

specific issues and situations.

· Backsighting procedure
· Scanner & Controller Wi-Fi

30
Maptek Scanner Operator Manual - XR3

Basic scanner handling

1. To remove the scanner from the case, grasp the two lower handles
on the base and lift. The scanner head can rotate with respect to
the lower base. This becomes evident if the scanner is held by one
of the lower handles and the upper handle, but it will not damage
the scanner as the motor acts like a brake to prevent too much
rotation.

2. Carry the scanner by the upper handle on the head of the

scanner, with the window glass against your leg for added
protection. If the scanner is placed on the ground, lower it directly
downwards and place on the scanner rest.

31
Maptek Scanner Operator Manual - XR3

3. Don't place the upper handle or tribrach adapter directly on the

ground.

32
Maptek Scanner Operator Manual - XR3

Tripod setup
When you are ready to go into the field and acquire scan data, ensure that
you have all the required system parts:

· Scanner
· Controller
· Scanner batteries
· Tribrach (and tripod, if required)

1. Set up the tripod at the desired location. If site survey control is

being used, set up over the required point location.
2. Extend the tripod legs to allow for a comfortable working posture.
Note: The higher the tripod is set up, the better ground range that
will be obtained. Set up the tripod so the tripod plate is as horizontal
as possible. Push the tripod legs firmly into the ground.
3. Place the tribrach on the tripod and secure it with the central fixing
screw.
4. Use the optical plummet to ensure it is centred over the survey point
if required.
5. Level the tribrach adapter clamp using the circular level. Turn two of
the foot screws together in opposite directions. The index finger of
your right-hand indicates the direction in which the bubble will move.
Use the third foot screw to centre the bubble.
6. Place the scanner on the tribrach using the lower two handles and
turn the locking lever to secure the scanner.

Starting the scanner

1. Insert the battery by lifting the battery compartment cover on the
side of the scanner. The green light of the power button will flash,
then turn off.

2. Turn on the scanner by pressing the power button.

When the switch is pressed, a green light will illuminate to indicate
power availability. The light will flash while the scanner performs the
boot sequence (10 seconds).
3. When finished, the system is ready for operation and the green light
will stop flashing and stay on green continuously.

Note: Pressing the power button again will turn the scanner off.

Note: If two red flashes are displayed during the boot sequence, this
indicates that Wi-Fi is disabled, otherwise Wi-Fi is enabled. (See
how to activate/deactivate Wi-Fi later in this section).

34
Maptek Scanner Operator Manual - XR3

Warm-up and levelling

The scanner head will perform a warm-up and levelling routine just
before any type of scan which is not waiting in a queue. The head rotates
90 degrees clockwise, pauses then rotates 180 degrees anti-clockwise,
pauses then rotates another 90 degrees anti-clockwise. Do not touch the
scanner while it is going through this routine, as the level compensation is
acquiring the offset readings to apply to the scan.
The scanner is capable of detecting very precise angles within
approximately 5° of horizontal.
When greater than 5° to horizontal, the readings are coarser. These coarse
readings are updated every 2 seconds and continuously displayed in the
notifications task bar of the Controller software.

Backsighting procedure
(Models T and CT only)
Backsighting by using the telescope may be required as part of completing
a survey job.
1. Aim the scanner at the backsight, and centre as close as possible on
the crosshairs.
2. The reticule is focused using the reticule focus ring on the eyepiece
and the target focused using the focus knob. It is important to have
both the reticule and target in focus to avoid parallax errors.

35

Scanner & Controller Wi-Fi

The Controller can communicate either by an Ethernet cable plugged into
the scanner or via a Wi-Fi link. The scanner includes Wi-Fi capability with
an antenna built into the left handle on the base of the unit. The Wi-Fi
operation can be enabled or disabled. The default setting when delivered
includes Wi-Fi capability enabled.

Scanner start light sequences

When the scanner starts, it produces a sequence of flashing and non-
flashing lights on the power button light, to signify conditions and states of
the scanner.

The following sequences relate to the Wi-Fi settings on the scanner:

· Wi-Fi disabled
Power button on > Flashing green > 2 Red flashes > Solid green

36
Maptek Scanner Operator Manual - XR3

· Wi-Fi enabled
Power button on > Flashing green > Solid green

If neither sequence (above) displays, an internal malfunction has

occurred, contact your distributor.

Note: If the Wi-Fi signal disconnects momentarily, data will be stored

temporarily on the scanner and continue to transmit when the connection
is re-established.

Enable/Disable Wi-Fi

The Wi-Fi functionality of the scanner is toggled on and off by the following
procedure:

1. Ensure the scanner is powered off.

2. Press the power button and release it, to start powering the scanner
on.
3. Wait until the power button light starts to flash, then quickly hold down
the power button again until the scanner head starts to home.
4. Check the scanner start light codes (described above) to confirm
whether Wi-Fi is enabled or disabled.

Scanner operating modes

Stand-alone Mode
This type of stand-alone scanning is performed without the ‘Controller’,
mobile phone, GPS or survey stations. This mode of operation initiates
scans which store data onto a USB flash drive plugged into the scanner’s
USB port. The scan data on the USB flash drive is then transferred to a
computer for viewing and analysis.

1. A stand-alone scan is carried out once the scanner has booted

and is ready for operations. Ensure the power switch light is
solid green and the USB flash drive is inserted.
2. Press and hold down the power button (minimum 3 seconds)
until the scanner head starts to move and commence the scan.

38
Maptek Scanner Operator Manual - XR3

3. Do not touch the scanner during the scanning routine. The scan
will be scan RES 2 carried out at 2x scan speed (100 kHz),
exposure setting will be repeated from the last tablet set up.
4. The scanner will conduct the warm-up and levelling routine,
then continue.
5. When scanning is complete, turn off the scanner and remove the
USB flash drive.

Note: If the light flashes red then displays green continuously while
the power button is depressed, then one of the following errors may
be the cause:
· USB flash drive full

· USB flash drive not inserted (properly)

· USB flash drive formatting or hardware error

Standalone scans can be cancelled by holding the power button until the
head starts moving back to the zero position.
» Refer to Appendix 2 about details of scan res settings.

Mobile Device Mode

This type of scanning is performed with a mobile device (like a mobile
phone, tablet or similar device) which connects with the scanner using Wi-
Fi. Like the stand-alone scanning mode, this mode of operation initiates
scans which store data onto a USB flash drive plugged into the scanner’s
USB port. The mobile device mode provides more options than stand-
alone scanning and doesn't require accessing the scanner buttons for
scanning.

Setting up the mobile device

The mobile device requires the following to communicate with the scanner.
Note: Compatibility - you will need a modern mobile
phone/smartphone/tablet with a large display suitable for reading the input
fields. Most modern mobile phones will automatically open the controller
browser once connection with the scanner's Wi-Fi is established, if this
does not happen then access is through a browser which connects to a
web server transmitting from the scanner. The browser should be an
ECMAScript 5 (2009) compatible browser.
Note: Mobile Device Mode capability in the scanner accompanies
Controller software version G3 3.0 or higher.
Note: Ensure the scanner is switched on and in Wi-Fi mode.

Operating scanner in low temperatures

Low temperature operating

Some locations require scans to be taken at temperatures below the

scanners specified minimum continuous operating temperature.
To extend the XR3 operation at low temperatures, Maptek has designed
the M20 (Minus 20°C) scanner specifically to operate in these cold
climates in order to minimize or even eliminate down time.

As a guide, typical M20 scanner operating times are:

· Continuous operation at -20°C with Neoprene jackets fitted.

· Approximately 8 hours operating time at -40°C with Neoprene jackets
fitted.

Note:
For a Cold Climate scanner - M20, ensure Neoprene jackets are fitted in
below 0°C temperatures and is removed when temperatures are greater
than 10°C.

Shielding the scanner from wind chill may prolong scanning time.

Once the job has been completed re place the scanner in the transit case
(chemical hand warmers may be placed in the case around the scanner).

Keep the scanner in a warm place while transporting and set up (e.g. in a
heated vehicle).

Battery life is reduced at cold temperatures. Keeping the battery warm and
recharging the battery using the car charger between scans will increase
battery life.

47
Maptek Scanner Operator Manual - XR3

Temperature limitations

The following temperature limitations are relevant to the scanner:

Standard XR3
· The scanner will operate continuously at 0 to 50°C and.

· Standard XR3 will operate for 40 min at -20°C.

· Standard XR3 will operate for 20 min at -40°C

Cold Climate Scanner - M20

· M20 Cold Climate scanner will operate continuously from 0 to 50°C

· M20 Cold Climate scanner will operate continuously from -20°C to 10°C
with Neoprene jackets fitted.
· M20 Cold Climate scanner will operate up to 8 hours at -40°C with
Neoprene jackets fitted

Caution: Storage temperature is -40 to 70°C. The scanner may be left in

this temperature range, without operating, for extended periods without
damage. If the system core reaches temperatures outside -40 to 70°C
damage may occur.
If the internal components are not at the right temperature the scanner will
not operate.

File Manager functions

Files panel
The openable Files panel lists the survey files followed by any gpsTrack
files and any other files that have been generated. When connected via
Bluetooth to an external GPS antenna, a track file is automatically
generated based on the GPS movements. The current day’s track file is
automatically displayed in the 3D viewer when viewing scans on the
Controller. A green line represents RTK fixed positions and a yellow line
represents RTK float or less accurate positions.
This list can be used to view the points or tracks in the 3D view, delete
the files, or copy them to/from the USB flash drive.
To view these points and/or tracks with scan data from the Scan list,
select all the desired data in the Scan list and Files panel, then click the

3D view button. (Ensure the File panel remains open and is not
closed). Various utility buttons are also available for use with the Files

Scanner and Drive mount Offsets

These values relate to offsets used in the gpsTrack process and Maptek
Drive system.
The Scanner to forward offset informs both gpsTrack and the Drive
system of the orientation of the scanner with respect to the forward
direction of the vehicle. Usually, a scanner is mounted backwards, which
equates to a Scanner to forward offset of 180º. However, other
orientations can be accommodated and minor misalignments can be
corrected by adjusting the Scanner to forward offset. For example, if the
scanner is actually facing 2º anti-clockwise from backwards, then enter a
Scanner to forward offset of 178º. The Drive offsets are needed by the
Drive system for the calibration between the scanner and the Drive
mounts on the vehicle. This is initially set up at the factory. Future re-
calibration by the user may be required if the mount plate is removed from
the scanner or if a different scanner is to be used with the Drive system.
The RTCM height offset is for compensating for some GPS base stations
not sending the antenna reference point to phase center correctly in the
RTCM message. Further information is available under Specific Workflow
Examples and the separate Drive Manual.

Maptek Scanner Operator Manual - XR3

Defined name GPS offset provides a setting for the difference between
the GPS Reference point (Phase centre) and the scanner reference level
(see the mark on the scanner base). The default setup assumes the GPS
Reference point is at the top of the GPS mount (this defaults to
514.5mm for the Maptek XR3 scanner). For more accurate reading you
add the height of the GPS isolator (139mm) and GPS offset value (usually
written underneath the GPS receiver unit and/or user manual). This
example uses a Trimble R6 with an offset of 64.9mm. The total of the
measurements is a negative number entered into Define name GPS
offset.
If the GPS receiver is set up differently an adjustment may be necessary
to correct the difference. For any other brand or model of GPS receivers
consult the GPS user manual.

Settings functions – Scanner and INS mount Offsets

Enter scanner height relative to an

attached bluetooth GPS receiver.
Measuring from the base of the
scanner to the base of the GPS
receiver is a negative value height.
For the XR3 it is
-(514.5mm + x mm).

The recommended workflow is to

enter the height offset -(514.5mm + x
mm) into the Scanner controller
and use a height of zero in the
“Antenna Phase Centre” setting for
the GPS controller. The scanner will
compensate for any difference in
position, including tilt factors. This is
XR3 in a drive m ount
a more accurate method rather than configuration w ith a
entering the height into the GPS bluetooth receiver
controller.
Another way is to enter the height
offset of -514.5mm into the Scanner
controller and use a height of zero
in the “Bottom of Antenna mount”
setting for the GPS controller, as
most GPS receivers will compensate
for the phase centre offset .

Vehicle compass calibration

The scanner has a built-in compass for use in determining the scanner’s
true orientation. Vehicle compass calibration is necessary for eliminating
vehicle interference with the scanner compass. It is only required once
initially, then at approximately six monthly intervals for updating the
calibration. This function is performed in Settings and then applied in the
Setup section when scanning from the vehicle and using the internal
compass option.

Settings functions – Vehicle–compass calibration

Perform a vehicle-compass
calibration to compensate for the
vehicle’s influence on the scanner’s
internal compass readings.

See Setup: Apply vehicle-compass calibration

in Setup for each job that involves
utilising the internal compass while
the scanner is mounted on a
vehicle.

69
Maptek Scanner Operator Manual - XR3

Setup
Setup defines the type of scan job, with a choice between Defined
Name, Survey Job or Multiple Back Sights. Other Setup options
include ambient conditions, scanner and associated configurations. A scan
job setup is required in order to continue with previewing and scanning.

A Defined Name scan job refers to a simple job specification using the
minimum amount of information to define the setup. There are different
options available depending on the equipment used - scanner on a tripod,
external GPS and tripod, external GPS and vehicle mount, external GPS
and Drive system.

Maptek Drive Scans

Maptek scanners now have the ability to scan while moving – called
“Driving” scans, using the Maptek Drive system equipment. These scans
are set up via the Defined Name tab when attached to the appropriate
equipment. When attached to the Maptek Drive system, the 'Defined
Name' tab will change to 'Defined Name - INS'. Information about setting
up and running Driving scans is given later in its own section: Maptek
Drive – Driving and Stationary scanning.

Survey Jobs allow the user to define exactly where the job is located
using absolute coordinates and orientation. These absolute locations may
be referenced to a surveyed backsight or specified with the help of GPS
devices and the scanner’s internal compass.

70
Maptek Scanner Operator Manual - XR3

Multiple Back Sights allow the user to define the position of the scanner
in areas like underground voids where no GPS signals may be detected. In
this case, multiple back sight locations may be used to triangulate the
scanner position. Three locations (reasonably separated) are identified near
the scanner and the scanner head pointed towards them to measure
relative angles.

71
Maptek Scanner Operator Manual - XR3

Defined Name setup

Defined Name scans can be set up according to 4 different scanner and
accessory applications:

A. Scanner (only) on tripod

Defined Name (no further options)
This is the simplest setup. Only a name is supplied for the scan. No
location or back-sighting (for orientation) information is provided with the
scan data itself. However, this information can be provided later when
processing in software.
B. Scanner with GPS on tripod (uses Bluetooth)
Defined Name (using Compass option)
This type of setup uses a third party GPS to determine the location of
the scanner. The scanner's internal compass provides rudimentary
orientation data.
C. Scanner with GPS on Vehicle mount (uses Bluetooth)
Defined Name (using GPS track option)
This type of scan is taken from a scanner mounted to a vehicle. The
vehicle is driven a short distance, stopped and then scanning
commenced while the vehicle is stationary.

72
Maptek Scanner Operator Manual - XR3

D. Scanner on Drive mount with GPS & IMU

Defined Name (Automatically switches to Drive setup when Drive
apparatus detected)
This is a moving scan that collects data while driving. It requires both a
GPS and IMU fitted to a special mount attached to a vehicle.

Listed below are typical stages in setting up a Defined Name scan job.
Refer to the section on Setup functions for more detail on individual
buttons and their functionality.
1. Select Defined Name setup.
2. Select an existing Scan name or create a new name.

The only input required for a simple Defined name setup. Other
options are available depending on the application.

Note: The scanner's internal compass and internal GPS data are
always saved with the scan data. However, they are not as accurate
as other methods for determining location and orientation such as 3rd
party external GPS and backsighting.

3. Choose between Compass or GPS track options, if displayed. These

are generally displayed if connected by Bluetooth to an external GPS
on a tripod or on a Vehicle mount system.

73
Maptek Scanner Operator Manual - XR3

The Compass option uses the scanner's internal compass to provide a

basic orientation reading when used with an external GPS. The
precision is not as good as scans using more detailed methods like a
Survey setup with Backsights, etc. The Compass function is also
available under Survey scans.

The Defined name GPS track option provides a quick way to perform
a GPS track scan when working with a Vehicle mount. The GPS
track function is also available under Survey scans.
3. Adjust values for Pressure and Temperature if necessary.
4. Select Vehicle compass calibration if using the scanner's internal
compass with a vehicle.
5. Perform alignment routine if a Drive scan is being conducted.

Defined Name - internal GPS and compass use

In some cases, the internal GPS and compass may be used as references
for registering scans later in software. This data is automatically saved with
the scan. We recommend using an initial scan setup for all subsequent
scans at a single location and not to reset the scan job until moving to a
new location.
Scanning at same location
Set up a new scan job (and perform an initial scan setup). Then, continue
to Add Scan while in Acquire mode.

Survey Job setup

Survey Job setups require the user to define the location of the scanner
as well as provide a secondary method to help orient the scanner in
absolute world coordinates. This can be achieved by backsighting to a
second known location, using the scanner’s internal compass or
performing a gpsTrack procedure. Temperature and pressure are set, plus
vehicle-compass calibration activated if the compass will be used while
mounted on a vehicle.

Survey Job – locations

The software stores locations in its own database to allow for convenient
recall as required. The following instructions detail three different methods
for setting up the X, Y, Z location parameters. They form part of the overall
Survey Job setup and apply to the scanner and the backsight (if used):
· Manual input – enter the X, Y, Z coordinates manually.
· GPS – transfer coordinates from a GPS device.
· Leave blank – for post-scan registration. Coordinates will be
supplied later in a specially formatted text file, for merging
within software like Maptek PointStudio.

Survey Job - internal GPS and compass use

In some cases, the internal GPS and compass may be used as references
for registering scans later during software analyses. This data is
automatically saved with the scan. It is recommended to use an initial
internal GPS and compass reading (initial scan setup) for all subsequent
scans at a single location and not to reset the scan job until moving to a
new location.

Specific Workflow Examples

Survey Job – two GPS
One variation of Survey Job utilises two GPS units, one mounted to the
scanner for determining the location of the scanner and a secondary GPS
unit located at a backsighting location. This scanner and secondary GPS
arrangement can also be mounted on a vehicle.

97
Maptek Scanner Operator Manual - XR3

Typical two GPS application mounted on

vehicle

To scan using the vehicle mount system and two external GPS:
1. Remove the battery from the scanner.
2. Attach the scanner to the roof mount and plug in the power cable. If
using Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi communications, attach the
Ethernet cable to the scanner and plug the other end into the
Controller.
3. Attach the GPS antenna to the top of the scanner.
4. At the desired scanning point, park the vehicle at a level location.
Inclinations of up to five degrees are compensated automatically.
Inclinations of greater than five degrees require compensation during
data processing.
5. Turn on the scanner, Controller and GPS. Ensure all devices are
communicating successfully.
The location is recorded from the GPS antenna mounted on the
scanner. The location of the second reference GPS antenna is also
recorded. The operator must input the two GPS locations into the
Controller as the origin and backsight respectively for every scan
acquired. If only one GPS antenna is available, it must be swapped
between the two locations in order to get these readings.
Alternatively, a single GPS may be paired with the scanner’s
internal compass to specify location and direction. A further option
is to carry out the gpsTrack procedure with one GPS.

98
Maptek Scanner Operator Manual - XR3

6. Acquire a preview, using the Controller, to ensure the level

compensation is applied.
7. Perform the required scan from within the vehicle.
The extra reference GPS antenna eliminates the need for backsighting in
the field. The software allows the operator to use two GPS antenna
locations with the survey station workflow by providing the scanner location
and effective reference location. This provides the seeding registration for
the global registration algorithm to be applied by the software, which
enables overlapping scans to be easily registered when post processing.

Software Process:

1. Open the Maptek software.

2. Select Register > Scans to Survey Datum > By backbearing
alignment angle.
3. Determine the calibration back bearing offset from a single scan and
apply this to all scans acquired.

4. Apply the one degree of freedom global registration using Register

> Global, restricting registration to rotation only and assuming
scans are level.

Survey Job – GPS and compass

Survey Jobs can be set up using a GPS device mounted to the scanner,
plus the scanner’s internal compass. This allows the scanner to be fully
located and oriented in real world coordinates. Select compass via the
back sight locations list. This combination is also suitable for vehicle
mounted systems, which will require vehicle-compass calibration.

100
Maptek Scanner Operator Manual - XR3

Survey Job – gpsTrack

Survey Jobs can be set up using the gpsTrack procedure which works
with vehicles and requires a GPS receiver attached to the scanner which is
in turn mounted on the vehicle. The user drives a short, straight distance of
approximately 5 to 10 metres. This sets up the orientation of the scanner
by tracking GPS points along the path. Select gpsTrack via the back sight
locations list.

Survey Job – GPS and manual

backsight
A variation of a Survey Job involves a GPS device mounted to the scanner
and backsighting to a known reference point. The location of the scanner is
automatically downloaded from the GPS device, while the backsight
location is entered manually. The backsight azimuth is determined and
applied as part of the set up.

Maptek Drive – Driving &

Stationary scanning
The Maptek Drive system is based on the vehicle mount system and
extends it to include an inertial navigation system (INS) for accurately
monitoring orientation while driving along. A GPS Receiver also forms part
of the Maptek Drive system for accurately determining location.

Note: A separate GPS Base station is required and needs to be

communicating successfully with the GPS Rover station in the DRIVE
system on the vehicle.

The Drive system is capable of:

· Driving scans. These are conducted from a moving vehicle. The

scanner is held steady on the vehicle’s roof and faces sideways,
scanning the environment following the driven path (or track).
· Stationary scans that are taken when the vehicle is stationary.
The scanner is set up to complete a standard rotating scan
while attached to the Drive mount. These scans can utilise the
INS and GPS found in the Drive system.

· Stop and go scans. These were stationary scans normally

conducted with the vehicle mount system. There are a number
of variations possible. However, USB connection of the Drive
system will deactivate Bluetooth capability – which may be
needed for some arrangements using other GPS devices. Check
the configurations you want to run.
· Tripod scans. The scanner can be removed from the Drive
apparatus and mounted to a tripod for standard 3D rotating
scans around the scanner’s base.
In all of the cases above, the Controller software will
automatically adjust the menu options to suit the equipment that
is present.

Maptek Drive Instructions

Generally, follow the standard Controller instructions for setting up and
viewing standard (stationary) scans. There are many common settings for
basic background information and conditions.

The following instructions however, give details where DRIVE scans will
differ. The Controller tablet will automatically detect the presence of the
DRIVE system when it is properly connected via USB. Screens and
commands thereafter will include the DRIVE variations, depending on
options chosen by the user.

These instructions focus on the specific functioning of Drive system
related scanning (moving and stationary scans).

1. Plug in and activate the Drive system on the vehicle. Ensure the
Controller is plugged in to the Drive system as well. The 'Defined

Azimuth & Position indicators

Azimuth & Position indicators display the standard deviations

for the INS alignment and GPS position respectively. They are
displayed as accuracy indicators in the notifications taskbar at the
top of the screen. The backgrounds of the Azimuth indicator and
Position indicator in the notifications taskbar will change from red to
yellow to green, indicating improved accuracy. The display also
features a satellite symbol indicating the number of satellites visible
to the GPS devices. A small antenna symbol in the top right-hand
corner indicates that corrections are being received from the GPS
Base station.

Az (Azimuth) indicator Position indicator

· Generally, the GPS will lock onto available satellites quickly and
be the first to provide an accurate position for the scanner.
· Alignment of the INS takes longer and is necessary before
each mobile scan. A message will appear indicating that
alignment needs to be carried out.

· When the GPS is within tolerance and the INS is within

tolerance, the Azimuth and Position indicators will display
green backgrounds.
Further refinement can be achieved by noting the individual values for
Azimuth and Position. Smaller values indicate greater accuracy,
which will produce more accurate spatial and volumetric calculations.
An Azimuth value of 0.03° should be achievable in most cases.

108
Maptek Scanner Operator Manual - XR3

Recommended Alignment process

Drive around to carry out the Alignment process. We recommend

setting aside a fenced area for driving the vehicle in a square circuit until
alignment is reached (usually within a few minutes). Drive from corner to
corner, stopping, then turning to the new direction and driving off again.
When alignment is completed, continue directly to the scanning
destination and begin scanning. If the INS falls out of desired accuracy at
any time, continue driving around until it falls back within the desired
accuracy levels.

When Azimuth and Position are within the green accuracy/tolerances,

the Acquire screen will automatically open, ready to set up parameters
and start scanning.

button. The system will prepare and display a countdown
sequence. When it is finished counting down, it will start to
acquire data. The mobile scanning process may be paused and
resumed at the Controller by pressing the Pause Scan button,
then Add Scan again.
5. Audible alarms (beeps) are used to assist recognising critical
stages. They are heard when the worst case colour range of the
Position and Azimuth indicators is yellow or red. A signal is
given when scanning begins, and when a single scan reaches its
maximum duration of 30 minutes.
6. PRESS the red Stop Scan button to halt scanning.

Note: Vehicle driving may be paused and resumed without

adjusting the software. When the vehicle stops, data capture will
automatically pause until vehicle movement resumes.

Acquire (Drive - stationary scan)

When scanning in Stationary mode with the Drive system, you can use
the GPS and INS of the Drive system. However, the INS will tend to drift
and will need regular alignment by driving around for a few minutes between
scans.

Stationary scanning option in Drive m ode.

The Drive system will take its reference point just after the vehicle stops.
Therefore any subsequent movement may alter the position and alignment
of the scanner with respect to this initial reading. For best results with
Stationary scans, ensure that the vehicle comes to a crisp, clean stop
and does not move before or during Stationary scanning. In fact,
alignment fading after the initial stop and reference point may not be
relevant.
· Avoid turning steering wheel – come to a straight stop.
· Use the handbrake and/or other means to secure vehicle.
· Check Position & Azimuth accuracies are OK, just after
stopping.
· Don’t allow vehicle to move (forwards or backwards).

Maptek devices and 3rd party accessories, etc.

114
Maptek Scanner Operator Manual - XR3

Important information & tips

Ø The recommended speed for driving scanning is 14 kph,
which will result in square data spacing approximately
equal to the 2X resolution of a standard (rotating) stationary
scan. Higher driving speeds up to 30 kph or 40 kph may be
possible but data spacing will increase along with a
decrease in accuracy.
Ø If moving the GPS Base station to a new location, the INS
needs to be reset. Turn off the power for the INS, then
restart. It may be beneficial to include a switch to the
power line for the INS.
Ø If conducting a stationary scan using the DRIVE setup,
take note of the Azimuth indicator in the notifications
taskbar. It may be necessary to drive around between
scans to help align the INS again as it may drift when
stationary.
Ø Each DRIVE driving scan is limited to a maximum of 24
minutes. Driving scans can be queued up.
Ø The software will automatically detect DRIVE connections
via USB and at the same time disable Bluetooth GPS
connections.
Ø Survey Job set up and scans are not changed.
Ø If the GPS indicates a poor signal (due to obstruction of
overhead satellites by trees or rock faces etc.) then wait for
a short time as the GPS device will attempt to find other
satellites in the visible portion of the sky above it.

Appendix 6 - Care Instructions

The scanner is a high precision optical surveying instrument designed to
allow operation in harsh environments. Even though the scanner is
designed to handle rugged use and is subjected to rigorous qualification
tests, it is not designed to sustain a blow that will dent a panel.

The following information provides important care instructions:

· There are no user serviceable parts or systems inside the scanner.
Never remove any external covers, panels or fixtures, other than
the eyepiece cover. These panels are all environmentally sealed.
Removal of any panel, cover or fixture will void any warranty or
service agreement. If a problem occurs with the scanner, please
contact your local agency.
· If the scanner experiences heavy impact or the eyepiece or any other
optical component suffers damage, the system may need to be
realigned or calibrated.
· Cleaning of the scanner should be carried out regularly.
· Care should be taken to avoid foreign objects entering ports on the
Controller (the covers should be left on when not in use).
· The scanner is IP65 rated (dust proof and shower proof), meaning short
term exposure to a light shower can be tolerated. However, leaving the
scanner out for protracted periods in wet weather may lead to moisture
access. The system can ‘breathe’ with temperature changes so
exposure to a very humid environment will enable moisture to penetrate
and fog the optics, causing the system to stop scanning. To dry out the
system, place in a dry office environment overnight.
· Direct rain or water may damage and/or reduce the lifetime of the
battery. Protect the battery from rain during outdoor use.
· Always remove the Neoprene jacket before storing in transit case.
· Always remove the battery from the scanner when not in use, or for
transportation. Leaving the battery in the scanner for an extended period
may reduce the battery service life.
· Always store the Controller in backpack and scanner in the transit case
provided when not in use, or for transportation.
· If the scanner is placed on the ground, it must be placed on the scanner
rest side, as shown below. Do not rest the scanner on the upper handle
or tribrach adapter.

Caution: Where scanners are exposed to high mechanical forces like

frequent transport or rough handling, it is recommended that service and
calibration is performed at least once a year by the manufacturer.

Use onsite
The system is IP65 rated, which means it is dust proof and shower proof.
Short term exposure to a light shower can be tolerated. However, leaving
the scanner out for protracted periods in wet weather will lead to serious
moisture ingress.
Rain
When the product is used in a wet environment it is important to dry the
product, including the transport container, the foam inserts and the
accessories, at a temperature not greater than 40°C before using again or
repackaging. Do not use or repack until everything is completely dry.

The system is not hermetically sealed, moisture will get in. Moisture will
not harm the system as long as it is allowed to evaporate before
subsequent use.

146
Maptek Scanner Operator Manual - XR3

Dust
Dust is very damaging to optics. The scanner has been designed to handle
a reasonable amount of contamination but every effort to minimise this is
recommended.

When onsite, keep the lid of the transit case closed to keep out as much
dust as possible. When the scanner is returned to the case, the dust will
wear through the paint work and may scratch the front window. Every effort
to keep the case and scanner clean will extend its useful life.
Humidity
The system can ‘breathe’ with temperature changes so exposure to a very
humid environment will enable moisture to penetrate and fog the optics
causing the system to stop scanning. This may be problematic when
transporting the scanner into a humid underground environment.

To avoid fogging, the scanner should be pre-heated in a warm room, using

a warming jacket or placing hand warmers in the transit case.
Storage
If the scanner is not to be used for a period greater than three months,
store it in the transit case with the battery removed. It is recommended
that the system is stored in an environmentally controlled area within the
temperature limits stated below.
Storage temperature is -40° to 70°C. The scanner may be left in this
temperature range, without operating, for extended periods without
damage.
Caution: Storing the scanner at temperatures outside -40° to 70°C may
cause damage.
Battery decay may occur during long term storage. To maintain batteries in
peak condition, it is recommended they are charged at least quarterly.
If the scanner is stored in the transit case, in the environmental conditions
specified, it will not suffer any damage.

147
Maptek Scanner Operator Manual - XR3

Cleaning
Scanner body
The panels and covers are painted metal and plastic. The preferred method
is to blow away excess dust using low pressure, filtered compressed air or
nitrogen and then to use a soft clean cloth to gently wipe away residual
contamination. If this is not adequate, distilled water can be used on the
cloth to remove contamination.
Ensure that the eyepiece cover is in place prior to cleaning.
Optical surfaces
The only items that require regular cleaning are the front window and
eyepiece (where applicable – models T, C & CT). The preferred method is
to blow away excess dust using low pressure, filtered compressed
air or nitrogen and then to use a soft clean lens cloth to gently wipe
away residual contamination. If this is not adequate, distilled water can
be used on the cloth to remove additional contamination.
The outer window has a resilient coating but is not indestructible. Repeated
contact cleaning will result in scratches and damage, which will affect the
scanner performance.
Note that the internal optics MAY NOT BE CLEANED. The optics will
become damaged if you attempt to clean them.
Controller
The Controller should be cleaned with low pressure, filtered compressed air
or wiped with a soft, dry lens cloth.
Cables and plugs
Keep plugs clean and dry. Using filtered compressed air, remove any dirt
lodged in the plugs of the connecting cables.

Calibration and service

This laser scanner is a precision instrument. It is important to adhere to
the recommended calibration and service intervals to ensure that it
continues to operate reliably and deliver optimum accuracy.
The scanner should be serviced and calibrated by a Maptek service facility
every 12 months to ensure that it retains its accuracy to within
specifications. Additionally, if the scanner is subject to a large impact, it is
recommended that a calibration check is performed. The shock indicator
on the base of the scanner may indicate evidence of rough handling.
Servicing and calibration can only be performed at an authorised Maptek
service facility. It is the client’s responsibility to return the instrument to
Maptek and Maptek pays the return freight. There are no user serviceable
parts inside the scanner. To book your service and or calibration contact
your local Maptek representative.

Appendix 7 - Transport
Transit case
Caution: The scanner must be transported in the transit case, with the
battery removed from the scanner at all times.

The transit case holds the following items taken onsite:

· One laser scanner
· Two scanner batteries
· Ethernet cable
· USB flash memory drive

The case has foldable carry handles and a pull out handle for easy hauling
using the built in wheels.
The size and overall mass of the transit case is classified as hold luggage
for commercial airlines.

Caution: Transporting the scanner with the battery installed, or without the
transit case may cause damage to the scanner and will void the warranty.

When the scanner is transported by air, it must be packed in the

cardboard packing box with the original foam spiders, which are designed
to handle shocks usually encountered during commercial aircraft transport.

150
Maptek Scanner Operator Manual - XR3

When transported in the back of a vehicle, the scanner will be subject to

vibration of unknown magnitude. The system is designed to cope with this
vibration when housed in the transit case.

The transit case and cardboard packing box have been specifically
designed to protect the scanner from the treatment that can be reasonably
expected when transported.

» Refer also to section on ‘Operating scanner in low

temperatures’.

Freight
Batteries
Both the scanner and the Controller use Lithium Ion batteries.

When returning items for service or repair please ensure that you
retain your batteries. No batteries are to be returned to Maptek
without prior written authorisation.

151
Maptek Scanner Operator Manual - XR3

Appendix 8 - Troubleshooting
Scanner will not turn on
The power button red light flashes quickly several times.
Solution
This indicates a flat battery. Remove and recharge the battery pack or use
the spare battery and try again.

No or poor communications
The Controller may show an error screen stating Failed to connect to
scanner.
Solution
· If using the Wi-Fi mode of communications, check that you are in
range and the wireless connection is properly established.
Otherwise choose another channel in Settings > Advanced. Revert
to Ethernet communications if no Wi-Fi solutions seem viable.
· If using the Ethernet link, check that the Ethernet cable is securely
connected to the ports on the Controller and the scanner.
· Check that the network settings are correct. Check IP address, LAN
properties, and internet protocol (TCP/IP) properties. Ethernet IP
address (Controller): 10.105.8.50, Wi-Fi IP address: 192.168. 1.50,
Subnet mask: 255.255.0.0

Scanner connection lost

If during scanning, the connection to the scanner is lost, a Scanner
connection lost error displays and the Controller reverts to the File
Manager screen.

D. libstdc++ which is distributed under the GNU General Public
License version 3 (https://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-3.0.en.html),
with the addition under section 7 of an exception described in
the “GCC Runtime Library Exception, version 3.1” as follows (or
see the file COPYING.RUNTIME):

GCC RUNTIME LIBRARY EXCEPTION

Version 3.1, 31 March 2009

Copyright (C) 2009 Free Software Foundation, Inc.

Everyone is permitted to copy and distribute verbatim

copies of this license document, but changing it is not
allowed.

This GCC Runtime Library Exception ("Exception") is

an additional permission under section 7 of the GNU
General Public License, version 3 ("GPLv3"). It applies

157
Maptek Scanner Operator Manual - XR3

to a given file (the "Runtime Library") that bears a

notice placed by the copyright holder of the file stating
that the file is governed by GPLv3 along with this
Exception.

When you use GCC to compile a program, GCC may

combine portions of certain GCC header files and
runtime libraries with the compiled program. The
purpose of this Exception is to allow compilation of
non-GPL (including proprietary) programs to use, in
this way, the header files and runtime libraries covered
by this Exception.

0. Definitions.

A file is an "Independent Module" if it either requires

the Runtime Library for execution after a Compilation
Process, or makes use of an interface provided by the
Runtime Library, but is not otherwise based on the
Runtime Library.

"GCC" means a version of the GNU Compiler

Collection, with or without modifications, governed by
version 3 (or a specified later version) of the GNU
General Public License (GPL) with the option of using
any subsequent versions published by the FSF.

"GPL-compatible Software" is software whose

conditions of propagation, modification and use would
permit combination with GCC in accord with the
license of GCC.

"Target Code" refers to output from any compiler for a

real or virtual target processor architecture, in
executable form or suitable for input to an assembler,
loader, linker and/or execution phase. Notwithstanding
that, Target Code does not include data in any format
that is used as a compiler intermediate

158
Maptek Scanner Operator Manual - XR3

representation, or used for producing a compiler

intermediate representation.

The "Compilation Process" transforms code entirely

represented in non-intermediate languages designed
for human-written code, and/or in Java Virtual Machine
byte code, into Target Code. Thus, for example, use
of source code generators and preprocessors need
not be considered part of the Compilation Process,
since the Compilation Process can be understood as
starting with the output of the generators or
preprocessors.

A Compilation Process is "Eligible" if it is done using

GCC, alone or with other GPL-compatible software, or
if it is done without using any work based on GCC.
For example, using non-GPL-compatible Software to
optimize any GCC intermediate representations would
not qualify as an Eligible Compilation Process.

1. Grant of Additional Permission.

You have permission to propagate a work of Target

Code formed by combining the Runtime Library with
Independent Modules, even if such propagation would
otherwise violate the terms of GPLv3, provided that all
Target Code was generated by Eligible Compilation
Processes. You may then convey such a combination
under terms of your choice, consistent with the
licensing of the Independent Modules.

2. No Weakening of GCC Copyleft.

The availability of this Exception does not imply any

general presumption that third-party software is
unaffected by the copyleft requirements of the license
of GCC.

Appendix 10 - International
Warranty
Warranty certificate
Maptek (hereafter referred to as the ‘Supplier’) warrants that at the time of
sale to the Customer, the scanner will be in substantial accordance with
the sales documentation supplied to the Customer for the duration of the
warranty period.

Warranty Period

The warranty period extends from the time of sale to two (2) years or 8000
hours actual use (as indicated by the scanner's own internal monitoring
system), whichever comes first.

Peripherals

The peripherals associated with the scanner are warranted for a period of
one (1) year.

Application

If during this warranty period the Product is found to be defective in

materials and/or workmanship and if the Customer notifies the Supplier of
the defect within the warranty period specified in this paragraph, the
Supplier will rectify, or if necessary to remedy the defect, replace the
Product, at its own expense. This remedy, excluding freight costs back to
the Supplier, will be the total liability of the Supplier.

This warranty shall not apply if:

(i) the Product is not used in accordance with Supplier’s instructions,

(ii) the Product is not returned to an authorised Maptek Service Centre in

the case in which it was originally supplied,

(iii) any part of the Product has been altered, modified, converted or
tampered with by the Customer or any other unauthorised party without the
written approval of the Supplier,

176
Maptek Scanner Operator Manual - XR3

(iv) the Product was purchased from a party other than an authorised
Maptek Reseller,

(v) any of the Product’s shock load sensors indicate extreme rough
handling,

(vi) damage or wear is caused by any of the Customer’s equipment

malfunctioning,

(vii) damage or wear is due to any other cause within the control of the
Customer that results in the Product becoming inoperative, or

(viii) the Product is not returned to an authorised Service Centre in the case
in which it was originally supplied, for service and maintenance at
recommended intervals at the Customer’s expense.

Warranty disclaimer
1) All freight costs associated with the return of the product to an
authorised service centre for assessment and repair shall be borne by the
customer. In the event that repairs are deemed to be outside of the supplier
liability under this warranty all freight and handling costs associated with
the return of the product to the customer are to be borne by the customer.

2) The foregoing is the only warranty made by the Supplier in relation to the
product. Supplier specifically disclaims all other warranties, express or
implied, statutory or otherwise, including but not limited to the implied
warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose and non-
infringement of third parties' rights.

3) This warranty applies to the original Customer only and is not

transferable.

4) Limitation of liability:

(a) No action, regardless of form, arising out of the transactions under this
warranty may be brought by either party against the other more than one
(1) year after such party knew or should have known of the occurrence of
the events which gave rise to the cause of action.

177
Maptek Scanner Operator Manual - XR3

(b) Parties expressly exclude liability to the other party for economic loss
(including but not limited to loss of profits, business revenue, goodwill, or
anticipated savings) and for any other consequential loss claimed to have
resulted from or be in any way related to the marketing, supply,
implementation or support of the product or documentation and whether
arising from negligence or howsoever.

(c) It is intended by both parties that the foregoing exclusions of liability

shall be reasonable as between supplier and customer, but in the event
that any or all of the foregoing exclusions shall be held to be invalid for any
reason, or either party shall otherwise become liable to the other for loss or
damages, such liability shall not under any circumstances exceed the
aggregate amount of original purchase cost.
