Homework 6
Due March 9/18

1. Consider a symmetric [30/-30/0] s graphite epoxy laminate (150 micron ply

thickness) subjected to a bending moment Mx (all other forces and moments are
zero). Using a maximum stress failure criteria (note do not use average stresses
for this system) determine the failure load Mx when the first ply fails. Which ply
fails and where? Also what is the failure mode?
2. Consider a [+-30/0]s graphite epoxy laminate (150 micron ply thickness). (a) use
the maximum stress failure criterion to compute the value of delta T below the
processing temperature that causes failure in the laminate (FPF), assuming the
stresses are zero at the curing temperature of the laminate. (b) discuss the failure
mode associated with this temperature change.
3. Redo problem number 1 but now calculate the failure (FPF) moment Mx if the
material is cooled down 150 C, (i.e. delta T= -150C)?
4. Problem 5.2.1 (derive only equation 5.8)
5. Redo the example problem in Jones pages 246-255 but assume that the thermal
loading is zero and only Nx=N, all other loads are zero. For this problem use a
progressive failure theory as he does in his example.
