alternative forms of treatment. You will be learning the difference of alternative medicine
from quackery so that you will become more informed and vigilant on the types of
alternative medicine that are safe and scientifically proven to help you in your total well-
being.

quacks manipulate consumers into buying their fraudulent products and services. In this
lesson, you are going to learn the different forms of Alternative and Traditional Medicine
that are recognized and supported by the Philippine government. You start with

Great! you have explained the four major domain of contemporary and
alternative Medicine. Take note: In our country, Republic Act No. 8423 or
known as the Traditional and Alternative Medicine Act of 1997 provisioned the
creation of the Philippine Institute of Traditional and Alternative Health Care
(PITAHC), which works closely with DOH. The PITAHC is also the law-making
body with regards to the effective use of traditional and alternative medicine.

modalities.

What Is It

Reproductive health is defined as a state of physical, mental and social well-


being in all matters relating to the reproductive system, at all stages of life.
To aid the reproductive health needs of the citizens, the government mandated
the Republic Act 10354 or most commonly known as Responsible Parenthood and
Reproductive Health Act.

Gateway drugs are drugs that people use initially that may lead to the abuse of
illegal drugs. Alcohol and Tobacco are gateway drugs. When alcohol is consumed, the
central nervous system is affected. Thus, a person is more vulnerable to doing
dangerous acts because of depressed decision-making skills.
On the other hand, the government provides protection from these gateway
drugs through the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act and the Tobacco Regulation
Act.
Republic Act No. 9165 or the Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 protects the citizens
from the harmful effects of dangerous drugs to their physical and mental well-being.

Republic Act No. 9211 or the Tobacco Regulation Act of 2003 protects people from the
sale, use and advertisements of hazardous tobacco products.
