What is Consumer Health?


Consumer health pertains to the aspects of wise purchase of health products and
services in order to obtain the ultimate satisfaction and wellness of the body.

How important is Consumer Health?


People consume goods, services, and gifts of nature for their day-to-day existence
on Earth. It is with this reason that people should be aware of the vital health topics and
be educated about preventive medicine and services in order to achieve good quality of
living. Consumer health provides individuals with knowledge, skills, aptitudes, values and
capacity to become responsible consumers.
Consumer health helps people on the following aspects:
1. Exercise consumer’s rights.
2. Choose heartful entertainment.
3. Take action if rights are violated.
4. Investigate health careers.
5. Have responsible choices about heath care providers and facilities.
6. Get information about heath products and their effects to health through
technology.
7. Manage time and money.
8. Acquire knowledge of laws to protect health.

Who is the consumer?


A consumer is a person who buys products or services for personal use and not
for business purposes. Consumers are free to make decisions whether or not to buy
goods or commercial items from stores. They can also be influenced by TV and print
commercials and other marketing strategies.

What are the rights of the consumer?


1. The right to choose
2. The right to be heard
3. The right to safety
4. The right to be informed
5. The right to satisfaction of basic needs
6. The right to redress or remedy
7. The right to consumer education
8. The right to environmental health

What is health fraud?


Health fraud is the dishonest promotion, advertising, distribution, or sale of
articles claimed to be effective in diagnosing, preventing, curing, or treating an illness or

condition, or providing a beneficial effect on health but not have been scientifically
proven safe and effective.

Who are the victims of health frauds?


The Following are consumers who are likely to become victims of health fraud:
1. Those who fall short of developing the correct attitude and orientation on health.
2. Those who are unaware of the roles, responsibilities, and rights of being users of
health products and services.
3. Those who do not give the right value for money, time, environment and people.

Components of Consumer Health


1. Heath Information – it can be drawn from health professionals, educators,
scientists, and the public to make heath and safety news widely available.
2. Health products
a. Food - any substance consumed to provide nutritional support for the body.
b. Medicines – any substance used in treating diseases, injury or illnesses.
c. Cleaning agents – usually liquids, powders, sprays, or granules that are used
to remove dirt including dust, stains, bad smells and clutter on surfaces.
d. Personal care – products as diverse as lip balm, cleansing pads, colognes,
cotton swabs, cotton pads, deodorant, eye liner facial tissue and wet wipes.
3. Health Services
a. Dentist – who specializes in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of
diseases and conditions of the oral cavity.
b. Dermatologist – can diagnose and treat disorders of the skin, mouth, hair and
nails, such as skin cancer and moles.
c. Dietitian – a person who give pieces of advice on matters of food and
nutrition.
d. Nurse – receive special additional training to perform physical examinations,
make diagnosis, and prescribe treatments often under the supervision of a
physician.
e. Radiologist – makes use of radiology methods such as X-ray, ultrasound, and
nuclear medicine using radiation.
f. Social worker – helps patients with matters such as finances, insurance, and
family problems.
g. Speech therapist – treats and helps in preventing disorders related to speech.

What government agencies provide health services for the consumers?


There are government heath agencies that provide health services and protect
the welfare of the consumers. These agencies aim to make the people healthy and to
prolong life expectancy.
