EVALUATING HEALTH PRODUCTS

Name: _________________________________ Grade Level: ______________

Section: _________________________________ Date : ____________________

LET US KNOW
MELCs: identifies the common propaganda techniques used in advertising.
H6CH-IVg-19
analyzes packaging and labels of health products. H6CH-IVh-21

Persuasion is the action or fact of influencing someone or of being influenced to do or

believe to do something.
Propaganda is the term for many communications that promotes point of view or a
political cause. It is used to persuade to believe in something or someone, buy an item, or vote
a certain way. It is used to influence opinions, emotion, attitudes or behavior. It is used to
spread ideas that further cause a political, commercial, religious or civil cause.
Remember, the idea in propaganda may be false or misleading because it is used to
influence people to persuade, believe, buy or do something.

LET US STUDY

There are varied propaganda techniques that could influence you to make judgment.
These are commonly used in advertisements, texts, passages or messages that can be
watched, read or heard.

18 - MAPEH Health Gr 6 Week 1 & 2

Bandwagon

This technique encourages you to “jump on board” or take part in something because
everyone else is doing it too.

It encourages an individual to do the same activity as experienced by a number of people.

Name Calling (Stereotyping)

This technique involves calling the competition or the opposing side names. It
persuades you to avail the product or service because of the negative image it creates against
another product or service.

This propaganda uses advertisement war with other products in the market.

Testimonial

This technique involves having a celebrity or other respectable person (like a doctor)
endorse a product, person, or cause.

19 - MAPEH Health Gr 6 Week 1 & 2

Famous or influential people testify about the beauty of a certain product to win the
interest of customers.

Glittering Generality

This technique involves using empty words, or words that just sound good, to make a
person, product, or cause sound good.

You give in because you are overwhelmed by vague, sweeping statements that usually
come in slogans or single catch phrases.

Glittering words include hope, change, possibility, justice, and others that give off an
extremely positive vibe.

It makes use of fancy words that elicit a positive response or feeling from you.

Plain Folks

This technique uses ordinary people to show that the product is being used by usual persons. It
shows how a particular product or service brought value to a regular human being like
themselves.

This is the opposite technique to testimonial propaganda.

Similar experience with a brand as people who you have something in common with.

Card Stacking

This technique involves listing all of the features or good aspects or a product, person,
or cause.

20 - MAPEH Health Gr 6 Week 1 & 2

This strategy show the best features, telling half-truths, and omitting or lying about its
potential problems.

Transfer

This is an effort to transfer your approval of something you respect and approve of to another
that the propagandist wants you to approve of.

People buy health products and services from what they see or hear. Thus, it is wise to
be well-informed about health products and services. Consumer health could be attained
through proper health information, honest and improved health products and services.

Whenever you see an advertisement or hear someone give speech, ask yourself: How
do they want me to feel? How are they trying to influence or manipulate me?

Another, is to always give importance to reading product labels. A label is a strip of

paper, cloth, metal, or other material attached to a container or product providing information
of the product’s brand, tag, use, origin, shelf-life and disposal.

Reading product labels help consumers choose items that will give the best value of
money and the best value of health.

In evaluating health products, one must first inquire or ask additional questions to
follow up vague information about the products. Second, is to identify factual information from
propaganda. An advertisement that sounds too good to be true is indeed a propaganda.

WHAT TO KNOW (ALAMIN MO)

MELCS: Practices good decision making skills in the selection of health
products (H6CH-IVh-22)

People use different products for their different health needs. Always remember, you
will continue to choose and purchase health products throughout your life. Since there is a
variety of health products and its examples are numerous, how do you make sure that what
you bought is the right choice?
Evaluating health products is important so that you can make wise and informed
decisions when purchasing products. It equips you with the knowledge and skills to make
sure your choice will help you maintain your health instead of harming it. Let us discover
how this is done.

Ways To Evaluate Health Products

1. ASK QUESTIONS, such as: What health needs does it meet?
How does the product meet that health need? What important ingredients
does it contain? Are there side effects in using it? Why should I choose
this instead of brand B,C and D?

2. IDENTIFY THE PROPAGANDA TECHNIQUE USED BY

THE ADVERTISER. Ads are designed to influence consumers. This is
the reason why their first purpose is to persuade. Giving information
only comes second. It just seems like informing is their first purpose
because advertisers apply advertising techniques then use different
types of mass media to manipulate the thoughts and behavior of their
consumers.

3. READ THE PACKAGING AND LABEL. Analyze

the words and other helpful information about the product.
The packaging and label contain the contents and possible
safety issues.

26 - MAPEH Health Gr 6 Week 1 & 2

MODIFIED DECIDE MODEL – serves as a guide in the selection and purchase of health
products.
Determine the essential product to purchase
Explore the alternatives
Consider the consequences of each option
Identify the factors that you consider important
Decide what to buy

HEALTH - WEEK 2 - COMPETENCY 9
PROTECTION FROM THE FRAUDULENT HEALTH PRODUCTS

Name: _________________________________ Grade Level: ______________

Section: _________________________________ Date : ____________________

WHAT TO KNOW (ALAMIN MO)

MELCS: Discusses ways to protect oneself from fraudulent health products
(H6CH-IVij-23)

“Cures all types of cancer,” “No Risk,” “Scientific breakthrough,” “Secret

Ingredients,” “Contains special materials,” and “Ancient cure for the life threatening diseases.”
When the promised results are too good to be true, you should be suspicious of the health
product. These are examples of the red flags of a health fraud.
Fraud is a illegal act where people lie to obtain money. They sell useless health
products that promise to greatly improve a person’s health because of some magical or miracle
cure explained in vague terms.

Protection from Fraudulent Health Products

1. AWARENESS AND VIGILANCE – you have rights as a consumer, and awareness of

these will be your first protection. According to the Department of Trade and Industry
(DTI), these are:
❖ Right to basic needs – including health care.
❖ Right to safety – protection against the marketing of goods that are hazardous
to health and life.
❖ Right to Information – protection against fraudulent or dishonest or
misleading advertising, labelling or promotion and the right to be given the facts
and information needed to make an informed choice.
❖ Right to Choose – products at competitive prices with an assurance of
satisfactory quality.
❖ Right to Representative – express consumer interests in the making and
execution of government policies.
❖ Right to Redress – compensation for misrepresentation and substandard goods.
❖ Rights to Consumer Education – acquire the knowledge and skills to be an
informed consumer.
❖ Right to a healthy Environment

your consumption. Recognizing individual and social responsibility to conserve
natural resources and protect the Earth for future generations.
✓ Solidarity – Developing the strength and influence to promote and protect the
interest of consumers.
✓ Action – to assert and act to ensure that you get a fair deal. As long as you
remain passive consumer, you will continue to be exploited.

2. KNOW HOW AND WHERE TO SEEK HELP

In case, you unfortunately bought a fraudulent health product, make sure you
keep it along with the receipt. Through receipts, you are protected as a consumer
because it contains the information about the product that you paid for, where and when
you bought it, and how much you paid for it.
With your parents or other trusted adults, show these as proof to your local
government’s health department so that they can investigate. You can also call the
Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) or other government agencies like the
Department of Health (DOH) and its Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

LET US PRACTICE (PAGSANAYAN MO)

Put a check mark (/) on the line if the situation shows protection from fraudulent
health products or services or a cross mark (X) if it does not.
